In this series of videos, I will cover how to switch to Linux from the beginning to the end.
This video is the fifth part of the series. You will find all the details for gaming on Linux Mint. Don´t hesitate to go through the chapters below to grab the info you need. Also, some of the tutorial parts can be applied on other distros.
Take in consideration the date of recording and the version of the software used: all this tutorial might become unrelevant in the coming years (I will create a new one no worries).
Enjoy!

I have to thank you very very much again! It is so awesome, that you are sharing all your infos here - understandable, slow and complete. I started my linux experience on Pop!OS and had so many errors + very bad FPS and this distro is supposed to be for gaming. I switched to Mint, used your setup and now everything of my stuff is just running and it's running very good. No errors and much better FPS than in Pop!OS. Again: Thank you mate 😍🥰😍

Isn't it better to use the system package version of steam since if you add the kisak mesa repos to get the latest mesa for AMD it will actually use it, instead of the mesa provided by the steam flatpak?

I really liked the content. In your experience have you found performance difference between distros?
@A1RM4X
@A1RM4X 10 месяцев назад
The distro itself is not the limiting factor in gaming performance : the choice of the display protocol, the choice of desktop environment and window manager impact performance. So depending of the distro choices, you will have different performance based on your hardware. Mint for example, with Cinnamon, X11 and my hardware is a little bit less performing than Arch with KDE, X11 on the same hardware. Hope this helps.

I never tried Custom Kernels - only upgraded my Linux Mint into 6.2 to have Intel Drivers on it (Intel Arc A750) just curious overall if Xanmod does change anything important for the gaming side
@A1RM4X
@A1RM4X 7 месяцев назад
Most of the kernel do not increase FPS. However, they will decrease your input lag / latency in every tasks including gaming. I recommend going with the TkG linux kernel. A link to the tutorial for installing it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QIEyv-Pnh0w.html

@@A1RM4X I didn't notice if you ever installed this again during the stream or not. I followed the instructions here as well, seemed to install fine and all...but hit rescan and still get the warning and link to udev rules. Also jw, do you know if this conflicts with AlienFX? That works fine for my old 2008 Alienware lights. Just wanted to try Openrgb, to check if it will light up my rgb xbox controller

What about AMD 7900 XTX GPU with a 7900x CPU? Ive tried several times, and just can't get Mint to be stable with this hardware. If anyone has advice or info, I'd love to hear it. I have 3 monitors, 144hz 1440p, and 2x 1080p 60hz Apparently 7900 XTX requires LLVM 15+, Mesa 23+, with Kernel 6.2+ I simply do not have the technical skills to accomplish this on Linux Mint.
@A1RM4X
@A1RM4X 9 месяцев назад
As I write this comment, you need MESA git + Kernel 6.5 or 6.6 RC1 (I think 6.4 has a regression with some AMD card / screen combo). Ask their forum for some help, they should be able to solve it. Now with recent hardware like yours, any type of rolling edge distro would simply "resolve" those hardware compatibility issues. I am thinking openSUSE TW, all Arch based, Gentoo and some deb/ubuntu based distro like Rhino Linux for example. My recommendation would be openSUSE TW for an easier transition from Mint.

I had massive screen tearing because I'm not rich and I do not own a G-Sync monitor, and what you suggested to just not to do it at the "force full composition pipeline" for us poor people, not having $300 ++ monitors, this "just dont use it" option actually prevents screen tearing... FYI. So mr. - zhe, zhat, zhis - accent guy: please don't spread nonsene for the Linux community if you haven't tested those..
@A1RM4X
@A1RM4X 28 дней назад
Rude. FYI I don't use G-Sync. This has nothing to do with being rich or not nor my accent... Force full composition pipeline will enforce hardware rendering/scaling and put extra load on the GPU. It might increase input lag, power usage and reduce FPS. Please stop being rude for nothing, if you enjoy this option just click on it and move on.
