How to Optimize Passenger Trains and Metros in Cities Skylines | Verde Beach Ep. 64
Hello and welcome back to Verde Beach! In this episode, we're going to examine the passenger train and metro services to ensure that the routes are structured in ways that minimize delay and maximize ridership! We're going to completely reimagine the metro/subway system and solve the backup issues at the airport. By the end of the episode, we'll add on more than 1,500 resident trips and 500 tourist trips while ensuring there is NO backup in the city! Enjoy!

In regards to the airport question: I think you should do both! Mulliganning Mulligan Island in order to put as many seperate/direct lines to areas to stop them clogging up other options, then a big airport where you suggested (because you'll want to toy around with the fanciest options from the new DLC). It's a lot of work, but I think only having one would just mean the jams return later as Verde Beach continues to grow. As always, love the city. :)

The airport island is very cool and unique. It's a distinguishing landmark for the city. It'd be a damn shame to see it go! But the city's airport does need expanded capacity... How about add your dream airport on that empty plot of land out beyond the freeway, and transition the existing airport into being a cargo-only airport. It is right next to that cargo rail seaport, after all. The city could have its Midway and O'hare or JFK and Laguardia.

What's happening with the eletricity is related not only to day/night (solar power plants are less efficient in the night), but mostly to temperature. The snow DLC added temperature fluctuation, and the need for (slight) heating when it gets down to 10-15 °C. That need gets covered with electricity, hence the increased need.

Imo it would we way better to extend the dark blue line to the metro station next to the college buildings and also the line from the other side. This would remove the need for the light blue line. My opinion for the Airport is, depending on how much customization will be possible with the DLC, consider building it somewhere else and maybe bigger, and potentially repurpose Mulligan Island for more cargo activity, like for example build some factories that can directly export thanks to the cargo hubs that you have in place, and/or maybe even the dry dock that builds cruise ships. Speaking of airports I'd like to make an "aesthetical" suggestion: since you have the Space Shuttle at the Space Center, even if it doesn't actually fly, you could build a small airport like the Aero Club or simply put down a strip of a wide road (i.e. avenue) to pretend that's the landing site for the shuttle. And one suggestion for the electricity problem: regardless of the day/night cycle, even if the map has a temperate climate, sometimes the temperatures drop quite a bit, and the citizens use electricity for heating: even if you don't have snow, you might consider some geothermal heating plants and offer them the choice to use it, and that way electricity consumption will drop some. Other than that, nice transit insight and management video, best wishes for a Happy New Year :)

I very much appreciated the detail you showed in solving the public transit issues. A city the size of Verde Beach that is continuing to grow would definitely have more than 1 airport. I think airports on opposite sides of the city would do wonders for traffic flow and transit since everyone won't have to funnel to one place in the city. @sccojake

I think a second airport would be best. Washington DC has access to two major airports, but they serve slightly different functions (even though they overlap in general air service), so I think Verde Beach could support a second large airport. Given the size both physically and population wise it would make sense to have at least one other airport in the region.

To me, making Mulligan International Airport bigger and more official with better runway config and a bigger island, and then placing a more regional airport above the highway makes the most sense. This is because it is in optimal space for entering the city for tourists and such, then catching public transport into the core. The smaller airport would provide helicopter access for the city and shorter flights and recreational flying around the general area, but ceding airspace to the bigger flights approaching the international airport. You could call the new airport above the highway "Verde Beach Heights Airfield" or something. Thanks as always for the awesome content!

That Burning-Conservation line cannot get out of that over-crowded station, even with the wonky metro-under-metro action. That's why you had over 1000 people stuck there. The metros couldn't leave. There are too many lines going to that one station, and forcing transfers all over the place to try to cut down on the problem only adds to the problem.

When it comes to efficient transit management, Minneapolis, Minnesota comes to mind. They have a high-speed intercity train, The NorthStar, for the metro area. From there there, they have an intracity tram line, Red Line and Blue Line, connecting each ends of the city limits. And lastly, the have a bus system for more frequent stops around the city. I'm not an expert int the field, but I think it works because the bus lines circulate between tram stops, not moving acrossed stops. I could be wrong, but I think that is why the pedestrian traffic is almost never congested, never converging groups of pedestrian traffic causing jams. That's just my theory though.

Love all the metro tinkering! To your question about Bass Street, many overloaded stations are crowded because the trains are already full and have no space for anyone new to board. Chances are Central Station one stop back is just taking up all the capacity. The fact that "passengers serviced last week" is so low when the station is so crowded is a dead giveaway that the issues are farther upstream! Same for why the second station on Burning-Conservation is crowded.

Realistically speaking, it would make the most sense to build a new much larger airport for the city, just like how Houston built Bush International as a “replacement” for Hobby Airport. This would also allow you to plan out ahead of time all of the mass transit, parking, etc., rather than trying to force it in there on the Mulligan Island. Also, with the fact that the island has major flooding problems, the FAA may require a new site anyway.

The Burning - Conservation line corner was too tight for a train to leave the station with another subway waiting at the corner. Make the corner less tight and the subway can leave the station and that'll solve the back up problem you fixed by getting rid of the stop. It would also fix the line if you didn't have the burning-conservation line stopping at the Meadow District transfer station on the same line as the other subway. Poor Burning-Conservation line, lost a stop and gained a station it didn't need because it wasn't being watched as it ran. Feels like a city just making decisions without checking the causes :P

I'd love for a second airport to be constructed since it more closely mirrors what happens in real life. Lots of big cities have to build a bigger airport further from the centre when they grow out of a smaller one. Off the top of my head: London has a bunch, I think New York has a few too and I know that Rome, Milan and Glasgow each have at least two. If I were to rework Mulligan Intl, I'd remove the cargo area and rework that into another smaller terminal and/or more transit options to the city.

There is a bypass station on the Mulligan Line. And one free platform at the airport... The Mulligan Line should be a regional service linking all the city to the Airport and there should be an express going through the bypass from the Airport to the Down Town Central Station. The Mulligan shouldn't go there, only the express one should. As a transport nerd I would take the Airport shuttle line with no one in the trains anyday of the week ! But given the train station is right beside the airport, it is kinda useless... All that would be needed IRL would be to build the train station right in front of the airport terminal, underground, parallel to the metro station. Something you should be able to do with modded assets such as Move It, Anarchy and MOM. 31:12 There is dark Navy blue line that blocks the light red line, causing its problems... Plus the White Line really should be in its own stations since you are already short of available tracks. Pink and White are now in conflict. I recommend you to make it seperate infrastructure or turn the White to a monorail or tram. Glad you finally realized the same thing. Shame we can't trace underground transfers corridors between the metro stations when they are so close to eachother... Don't forget to add fences to the side of the new metro station to avoid leaking visitors in the park ! WIth the upcoming Airport DLC, either reowrk the actual airport or build a new one and the second line of the metropolitan airport could become an inter airport link. (or a real airport shuttle if the new terminal is not far from the first one). Seriously, there would be no need for a second station, how can the game prevent you from changing one of the two lines from one side to the other? 55:08: In think you lack a stop on one of the two tracks...

For your airport situation, I think you should build a large new international airport somewhere outside the current city, then once that's in place, you could consider closing Mulligan to update and renovate that terminal. That's normally how airports are expanded or redone, so there's never a time when air services are discontinued. And I think it might have similar rewards in game, since you won't be disrupting your transit and imports. Might also want to just review your train lines, make sure they still make sense and give them names as well. This was a fascinating episode and I found it really interesting to see you work through the problems in real time. Happy new year to you!

I feel like with Mulligan Airport island, the entire island is probably the property of the port or airport authority and the commercial is just rented out.

City planner, When I first started playing CS, due to me not using public transport often, I absolutely hated it and didn't use it at all. Watching you build Verde Beach has infected me with a love for public transportation and city planning. I can now watch for hours on end how sims will endlessly flow into and out of my metro hub.

I vote new airport near the ruins. Isn't unheard of to have airports near historic places (ex. Fort Snelling and MSP Intl.). At 48:15 you added a whole new stop instead of cheesing the stop to the other side of the platform like you did for the rest of the episode. A little confusing to over-engineer but the result was success so that is all that really matters. Thank you again for the great content!

Outside of managing passengers in the game, is there any benefit of forcing transfers irl? Seems like longer, more connective lines would be way more desirable. I'd rather take one train to get somewhere than transfer.... even if it took slightly longer. For example, all lines in BART in the bay area go from one end of the system to another, except for a couple that end in SF (where people might only take BART for a few stops).

Holy flying bat cow, that's a lot of people! May I suggest replacing the Meadow district bus station with a Bus/Metro hub? I mean, you already called a mulligan on that area and you don't like the new street, might as well replace the bus station too. Having two metro stations built into the building is better than an additional adjacent metro station. As for the airport, in my humble opinion, wait for the new dlc & revamp Mulligan Island then, the new Airports & the museum they showed in the trailer look promising. Hopefully it'll add more hubs to the game. Also, when the time comes to recamp Mulligan Island, may I suggest upgrading the train station to one of the big 6-lane hubs? I'm sure Karen Sterling would an express train line from the airport to her town. Excellent work like always, Phil.

City planner, it would be handy if you could build double width metro tunnels for when you've got 2 lines that pass through a station so the tunnel would have 4 tracks. I feel that would resolve a bunch of the problems here

OMFG! I had no idea I could change which station side my metro docks at! Thank you for showing that! I was wondering why I had like 10 metros backed up waiting. They are probably all trying to jam in in the same side.

I think you should just use the metro plaza from CCP to shift the dual-platform station next to the bus stop(shown at the start of the video) and end all the lines there. You can easily end 10 lines at that station without getting any conflicts. (stretch and delete points to assign different sides of the platforms) And it's a much cleaner solution and will work without problems. Currently, you've no room to grow with some lines running at 500%. Only transfer will happen for the bus station and you can make it so that bus station transfer does not need to cross road.

Regarding the airport question, I believe that an expansion of the current airport would be beneficial assuming the city is going to receive a lot of tourists in the future and also it would be less pricey than going all out and building a completely new airport. This is due to the relocation of highway direction, metro lines, train network direction; these would all have to be adjusted alongside some other key things that would just be too pricey to relocate to a completely different place/adjust them. I do think that adding a little community airport with a flight school or something similar would be nice though, that could be a project for later on. Edit: I suggest experimenting with adding taxi stands at the airport as that may balance out the ridership of different modes of transport. Hope it helps.

With the recent creator DLC, there's a metro station that has like 16 available lines. Something like that. It might come in handy now. Make it like a metro Grand Central Station. Maybe.

during the 'one more tangle' section, you added a hokey metro station, but would it be possible to use the trick where you choose which side of the platform trains load on to get the green and salmon lines to load on opposite sides? that should have the same effect as turning both stations in to end stations

Would have liked to, but the issue is that the lines meeting and the east and west were waiting for boarding/alighting to finish before going themselves. That was leading to delay and backup.

I find fun in reworking the current airport instead of building a new one. Thinking about ATL Airport, they added on to the existing airport instead of finding a new plot. It was cheaper to buy neighboring plots to expand out, especially when they added the new international terminal.

The Burning-Conservation line skips a stop at the Olde Industrial District heading from the Pyrotechnic towards the Bus-Metro hub. Adding it back might help the ridership a little bit. Otherwise, I enjoy traffic/transit fixes just as much as an interesting build. As far as the future of the Mulligan International Airport, I say keep it, but add a second airport somewhere else when the Airports DLC comes out. Also, maybe consider adding the Hobby Airport somewhere in the build. Maybe near the spaceport since a lot of astronauts have also been avid aviators.

to add or demo? It depends on what kind of community Verde Beach aspires to be. It hasn’t been my impression that Verde Beach intends to become a sprawling metropolitan area like Houston or DC or NYC… which might necessitate two airports. But rather a bustling, vibrant mid-size city economically dependent partly on tourism and partly on its native forestry industry. It’s a cozy city to visit but not because it is monstrously huge and overwhelming in scale. Denver seems a more appropriate model. Denver built DIA, and then applied new urbanism concepts to redevelop the old airport into what is now central park neighborhood. You could add a new DLC airport where you have mentioned and the redevelop the old airport into exclusively an industrial cargo port/hub, expanding capacity and relocating some of your more noxious industrial uses into the spaces opened up by demoing the old airport. It could be the mother of all mulligans.

Hello! Just a tip: track-based transit will prefer the right-hand track when adding stops, depending on the direction you draw them. If you want two lines to share a single stop as a transfer point, play with which direction you draw the route.

Czech republic, Prague, uses trams to alleviate the traffic from metro. They basicaly follow the metro line, with proper transfer stations, and some extra stations too. Those are prefered by people driving shorter distances, and they are easier to transfer to other tramlines, plus tourists prefer them. And when metro is undergoing some emergency or planned repairs, it is easier to replace it´s capacity by throwing a few more trams on the line.

In in game terms interchange stations on systems like London Underground would be separate stations separated both horizontally beside each other and vertically one above the other, with passengers getting between them by tunnels stairs, escalators and lifts (elevators). It would be neat if the game had lifts as a vertical transport mode, not just to stacked transit hubs, but things like footbridges, and cliffs.

@CPP, a RU-vidr that goes by Real Civil Engineer talked about The Spring Paradox the other day in his play through of Freeways. Apparently if you have a bit of extra road, you can put more vehicles on the road and space them out further. Could you do that with your Burning- Conservation line? Have some extra track to force them to spread out?

Oftentimes you'll find that the station with the highest number of passengers waiting is not the issue, but the one before it that fills up the entire train/subway/metro. If it enters a station with 150 riding passengers, it isn't going to take a lot of new passengers, hence backing up station B, while station A needs more connections

You could've used the line extension trick on the Meadow district metro stop, to have the lines meet but at separate platforms, enabling a more efficient in-station transfer. Also subterranean train tunnels (like the London Crossrail) could be worth looking into as a metro alternative

London has three airports serving it nowadays, I think with the Airport DLC making a new airport and leaving muligan island as a legacy development with better connectivity to the city but less capacity would be fine. It feels Verde Beach may want to grow larger still, maybe even seeding the suburb/satellite town that will become overawed by the new airport built next to it which is really serving the city.
