Welcome to Denglisch Docs! Ordering pizza is something we all frequently do, but if you don’t speak English fluently, it can be a daunting task.
Americans refer to pizza restaurants in a number of different ways. Most refer to larger pizza chains like Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Papa John’s by name, but for smaller, local “mom-and-pop shops,” you might hear people say, “I’m going to the pizza place or pizza spot.” Younger Americans might also say, “I’m headed to the pizza joint.” All of these phrases refer to the same thing, which is the pizzeria!
When you walk into a pizzeria, the person taking your order will greet you and ask, “Can I help you? May I take your order? What would you like?” or “What can I do for you?” No matter how they ask, they all want to know one thing, which is, “What do you want to eat or drink?”
There’s an order to ordering: size, crust, type, then toppings. When you respond, you should be very specific, especially when it comes to pizza, because one size (and slice) doesn’t fit all.
If you want one piece of pizza, ask for a slice by saying, “Can I have a slice? May I have a slice? I’d like a slice,” or “I’ll take a slice of pizza.” In New York, people commonly say, “Let me get a slice.” This is when you should also say what kind of crust you want. Do you want thin crust, regular, thick crust, which we also call deep dish or pan pizza, or Sicilian, which is an ultra thick crust? Most Americans prefer thin-crust pizzas, but you can order what you prefer by saying, “I’d like a thin-crust slice,” or “I’d like a slice of thin-crust pizza.”
To order a whole pizza you ask the same way. The only difference is that this time you need to specify what size pizza you want. In America, pizzas are also called pizza pies and they come in small, medium, and large, like sodas, fries, shakes, and fountain drinks. And some pizzerias also offer smaller pizzas for one, called personal pizzas. To order a whole pizza pie, say, “Can I have a medium size regular pizza?” or “Can I get one large Sicilian pizza pie?” If you want the smallest size pizza, you can say, “Can I have a personal pan pizza?”
The extra cheeses, vegetables, or meats that we put on top of our pizzas are called “toppings.” To add toppings we say, “Can I please get one regular slice with extra cheese?” or “Let me get two small pizzas: one sausage, one pepperoni.” Be careful because pepperoni in English is different than Peperoni in Germany. In America, pepperoni is beef and pork sausage seasoned with pepper. If you only want one or more toppings on each side of your pizza, use the words “half” or “side.” Say, “I’d like one large pizza: half plain, half pepperoni,” or “I would like one large pizza: one side anchovies and one side veggie,” which is short for vegetables.
Pizza pies that have a combination of toppings already on them are specialty pizzas. To order a pizza with all toppings say, “Can I have a large Supreme pan pizza?” or say, “Give me the works,” which means “I want everything.” But let’s say you want most but not all of the toppings. In this case, say the words “no” or “hold.” For example, if you’re allergic to peppers, say, “I’d like a Supreme pizza with no peppers,” or “I’d like a Supreme pizza, no peppers.” You can also say, “I’d like a Supreme, hold the peppers.”
To order drinks, appetizers, desserts, or side dishes, which we call “sides,” say, “I’d like one large deep dish pizza with a soda and a side of fries, with extra ketchup.” Whenever we say “extra,” it means we want more.
After you finish ordering, the person taking your order will ask, “Would you like anything else with that?” This is the same as “Will that be all?” and “Does that complete your order?” You can say yes or no to this question. Next, they’ll ask, “To stay or to go?” If you “order in,” or “to stay,” it means that you plan to eat your pizza inside the restaurant. If you “order out” or “to go,” it means that you want your pizza boxed up so you can eat it somewhere else. So, if you’re ordering ten pizza pies for a pizza party at home say, “I would like ten pizzas to go, please.”
