Attended Divine Liturgy for the first time a month ago or so. I have been raised protestant my whole life and we have raised our children that way also. We honestly did not know any better. That being said, glory to God for opening us up to his true church! My soul has been longing for this without me knowing exactly what was missing.

INDEED: “In Him we move and have our being…” In Him means the Church; Christ is the Church: He is the Head and we are members of His Body. We all yearn to be at home in this world, but we are strangers in a strange place. Only the Church is home here. Only in the Church do we find the paradise that He created and intended for us.

Without being Catechized or baptized into Orthodoxy (from Protestantism), I can say that the Lord is changing my heart - and my life - through prayer. Seek and you shall find, indeed. Thank you, Father Peter! Today, I experienced my first Divine Liturgy, and it moved me to tears of joy. My wife, who remains devoted to her Protestant faith, has been incredibly supportive of my journey towards conversion. It's a process, but I am blessed to have found a wonderful spiritual father in my area to guide me. Each day, I feel my heart growing and turning away from sin and misguided theology. I pray that my wife will also come to see the truth in her own time.

Thank you so much for this. I've been watching in small portions. I am not Orthodox, but I also do not think I can attend protestant services any longer. I am being drawn in. So much I don't understand, but it feels like I'm coming home. My husband is unsure, but willing to test the waters with me. He has a lot more to unravel from being raised protestant and attaching himself to certain reformers and beliefs. Pray for us, please!

Thanks for telling me about not crossing legs, as I just did that! Oops! I'm just coming to the church as an American so I need to be told about these things. Thanks for covering the basics. I'm hoping to become a catechumen soon, after ten years of being Christian finding the Orthodox church last year through stories of saints online. I have gone to different churches to find the proper one, I sometimes go to a Catholic grotto, but something was keeping me from converting. I know when I was in churches without saints it felt empty. I didn't know what Christian orthodoxy was really until last year or so, which now seems unbelievable. There is a phenomenon of American converts to Christianity becoming born again at first, of which I was doing, but it didn't leave me with much framework, which is needed. I appreciate your videos I've started the lessons and looking forward to them. I especially am benefiting from the Russian New Martyrs lessons as I've been trying to learn about them and what happened in Russia during that time and you seem to be the only one doing them any justice that I've found, except for the one other RU-vid channel that you reference. Thank you.

In the latin tridentine Mass women also have to cover the head with a veil. White for single women, black for married women. It is true you kept the traditions and the liturgy in a purer form. The modern mass in the catholic church is very protestantized. Thats why i go in the latin one as much as possible. 2hours pass and you feel it was so fast. Its a blessing
@Val.Kyrie.
@Val.Kyrie. Год назад
There are mantilla rules, but my most used veils are a light brown (similar to my hair colour so it blends in) and dark purple. The Latin mass is very protestantized. Trent created the Tridentine mass to counter Protestants specifically. They made changes to attract Protestants. I was a Latin mass trad for almost a decade before converting to orthodoxy. A low mass is thirty minutes a high mass is an hour.

I was a bit inattentive when I was at my first few liturgies, there’s was just too much going on for me to pick it up, and I stayed after the call for the catechumens to leave. I think I got a spiritual backlash after the first time for with I was not ready. It was very intense and emotional but it made me realize I went where I didn’t belong. After consulting my priest, who said it’s better to respect the holy tradition, I no longer stay.

A few questions for those who left protestantism to go into orthodoxy, 1) why the switch? 2) what Orthodox doctrines was hard for you accept and why did you accept it? 3) Did you find the orthodox practices foreign/strange at first? 4) Do you still hold certain beliefs/doctrines from protestantism and which ones? 5) why Orthodoxy and not Catholicism or Lutheranism? I am on rhe edge of converting to orthodox but it is very different from reformed protestantism. Not to mention i have my wife looking into this... and she's "not sold". They do it that way in the Catholic church, where they will dismiss the catechumens during service at a certain time, and then do their own study together. But for anyone coming to experience the Orthodox Church for the first time or second time or whenever, they need to be able to sit through it all and not be told to remove themselves during communion time. That would not welcome people, or draw people into the Orthodox Church it at all, but make them afraid, or feel rejected.

I used to visit an orthodox church pretty often when I lived in a city and always felt and overwhelming sense of warmth and safety, though I never attended any services. The town I have lived in for the last five years doesn't have one, but a liturgy is going to be held here the coming weekend. I'm interested in going. I was raised "culturally lutheran" and my family only went to church a few times a year. I never felt much of a connection. Now, I want to find God again. I know there's only a very small group of orthodox christians in my town and if I go to the liturgy, I'll 10000% be noticed and it makes me nervous, on top of already being nervous about trying a new thing. Any words of encouragement or experiences especially from other people who converted from lutherans?
@OrthodoxEthos
@OrthodoxEthos 5 месяцев назад
Please don’t hesitate to visit. Many Orthodox in America are converts from Lutheran and other faiths. It would be good to go and stand in the back and observe and don’t feel obligated to fit in or scared about causing any offense. If you want, you could call the priest of the parish ahead of time in case he might have some specific advice regarding attending that particular parish for the first time. Orthodox churches can differ a lot from one to another with regard to their makeup, for instance some may use very little English and be mostly comprised of people who have come from another country, while others may use mostly English and be comprised of mostly American converts with different faith backgrounds. If you don’t have a good experience at one Orthodox church, try to visit others.

There is a degree to which God can fill in what is lacking in terms of the weakness or the laxity of the priest. If there was not some intention to not do a proper baptism and the priest maybe was nervous about dunking the child all the way or something like that then I think we could trust God to fill in for the priests weakness there. From a member of the OE Team (if you want to ask Fr. Peter directly, let us know here or reach him privately on Facebook or team@orthodoxethos.com): Classical music, being far more appropriate than "rock and other forms of psuedo-music" as Fr. Seraphim Rose refers to them, remains something lesser than ecclesiastical music. If something distracts you from prayer and turns your nous away from Christ, then put it aside. I am still learning how to apply the wisdom of the Saints on this matter, but I do believe that much benefit has come to my soul as I have almost entirely eliminated popular music from my life, only retaining occasional classical music and embracing Orthodox music/chanting. I hope this helps.

@OrthodoxEthos
@OrthodoxEthos 2 года назад
@Daniel J Clark- I would not say that you’re going to “redo baptism“, because strictly speaking you were not baptized, that is immersed, but moreover there is no mystery, no sacrament of initiation *into the church* among the heterodox, who are outside the church. Clearly in your case, as in most others today, the presuppositions for economy do not exist. Therefore, it is imperative that you are received into the one holy Catholic and apostolic church as the Lord has commanded, by immersion, by baptism.
@OrthodoxEthos
@OrthodoxEthos 2 года назад
@OrthodoxMacrfonian - The only correction that I’ve heard an elder suggesting for your case is the following: At a baptism for another person, after the mystery, you are immersed three times in the sanctified water. This is what he recommended, and *not* the full mystery again, which would be quite mistaken and incorrect, given that this was *an orthodox priest in the church* who made this mistake but during the baptismal ceremony, the mystery.

I am from an Orthodox country (Greece) and we always take andidoron after we take communion. This happens also in Mount Athos and they also give us some wine or andidoron deeped in wine right after communion. Also we can take communion even if we arrive at church after the gospel. Women in Greece never cover their heads anymore. For me these things said here sound very strange and l am a regular church goer (l go to church almost every day) and born Orthodox. Also another thing we never do in an Orthodox church is put our hands behind our back and if we yawn we cross our mouth with the sign of the cross. Lastly it should be pointed out that women who menstruate cannot take communion nor do they kiss the icons. Before it was not considered appropriate for menstruating women to enter the church at all but today they attend .
@OrthodoxEthos
@OrthodoxEthos 2 года назад
This is the practice in Greece. No one is saying that it is not. However, it wasn’t always this way. There was a time when what the Russians do for post-communion cleaning of the mouth was universal. That people commune even when arriving after the Gospel is also well-known. Is it profitable and good to come so late and then to commune? Also, it is well known that women generally don’t cover their heads in Greece. Again, this was not always the case. Before the second world war women covered their heads throughout Greece. Why did it change? Was it a good change, reflecting Orthodox piety?

@@OrthodoxEthos Generally the priests here don’t concern themselves with such things and it’s not necessary to do all these things in order to be Orthodox. As for head covering it has become something completely alien to Greek women but when l was in Syria, l saw Greek Orthodox Syrian women (in the US they call them Antiochian but in reality they are Greek Orthodox) covering their heads. What you say it’s good but it’s not necessary to do that in order to be Orthodox either.

@OrthodoxEthos 2 года назад
Your approach is a little legalistic. In other words, you’re saying it’s not necessary to do that to be orthodox and the criteria for you is because they don’t do it anymore in Greece. @@OrthodoxEthos spiritual life has more to do with what we do at home not only when we attend church. By putting a headscarf on your head it does not make you a more spiritual person in any way.
