In this video I go over what a plateau is, what causes a plateau, and how you can overcome your plateau in rock climbing.

While you may have the technical definition of a plateau, I think this video needs to explain what isn't a plateau first. I can't tell you how many people I see who go, "I've been climbing for and haven't gone up a grade in , I feel like I'm plateauing." when the answer is merely that they've gotten through the newbie gains period. Secondly, since this is a new channel, I'd highly suggest some sort of visuals or something. It's hard to gain pay attention to the whole thing as it basically seems like I'm sitting in on a lecture, and if I wanted that I could simply read one of the many articles about this exact topic. Lastly, frankly I could do without you mentioning that you climbed 13b, story or no story (I can think of a number of stories of more serious injuries and higher grades). If the grade was 15b, or even 14b than that's pretty noteworthy, but 13b isn't really a noteable grade, and I don't even know if you mean a specific route or in the gym, so the video starts out with me going, "Meh."

Thank you so much for the feedback! I agree that a lot of new climbers worry that they are at a plateau far too early. I hope that the idea of changing the way we measure progress helps climbers in that situation. I will definitely work on the visuals. I have a lot to learn there! I also am grateful to hear your input on sharing my own progress. I don't feel like 13b is super significant, but I do hope to establish some credibility for those who are looking for advice in the 5.11s and below. Any suggestions on establishing credibility outside of citing my own progress?

@@nichemovement I think you managed to establish credibility well through a strong line of reasoning! To me it's clearer now that a plateau is a lack of being mindful of your own skill set compared to the specific route, and if I ever get stuck I'll try not to get boggled down by the abstract concept of a plateau. Instead I'll try to be mindful about details that will actually help me progress. I've only been climbing for 5-10 times and i found this video helpful :)

@@nichemovement As far as your own progress, I think the process of getting back into things after the injury is what would be the more interesting story to me. To do agree that beginner climbers can be too focused on numbers, so I see why you mentioned it. And I think for your average climber in the gym, 13 does feel like a big deal because that's often the hardest grade their is. So anyhting harder doesn't even register to them, But with all that said, I think show, not tell is the key. For me, I'd much rather see someone climbing rather than hearing them tell me a number. I think even beginner climbers can tell when someone looks like they know what they're doing versus when they don't.

I am so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for letting me know. It is so good to hear :) That is good to know about the line of reasoning as well. I hope with time the videos will be able to show visually more as well!

I think you are right. Thanks! Yeah, I will work on getting more climbing visuals. Again, thank you so much, this is so helpful!
