As a woman I found ‘Minimalist Mom’ videos very helpful. She suggests picking out your favourite clothes, say 5 casual tops, five smarter tops, 5 jeans etc. Donate any clothes you are sure you won’t wear again, and put anything you are not sure about in a box and store for a period. If you don’t miss it, it can go. As she says, we all have a capsule wardrobe, but it’s hidden under everything we never wear!

@@nicolabenson1155 I saw this and its helpful if you live in a place with defined seasons. Here in Scotland we can have three seasons in one week and wear a sundress one day and need a heavy sweater the next. In winter we can have 50f one day and 23F the next. I have quite a large closet so I’m thinking of doing 3 seasons clothes in different areas and using each section according to the weather that day...although by lunchtime the season could have changed twice

I work in the cosmetic industry. I have to wear black every day. I’ve owned the same clothes for 15 years! I hand wash everything at night in cold water. I wash every other time I wear the same thing. I only hang in the shower to dry. My clothes never wrinkle. They look brand new after years and years! This takes MINUTES a couple of times a week! And less is more! I own almost exclusively black clothes. A couple of things are gray and a few things are white. That’s it! Everything goes with everything. I don’t own prints and I love everything I own. if I don’t love it I give it away to someone who will -or I give it to Goodwill. I don’t shop -And if I do eventually, I buy some thing in my “color pallet “ . It is so easy to get dressed for any occasion. I always look put together because everything goes together! Packing is a dream! -And people tell me that they could never do what I do! Then don’t! I love the ease of a simple and INEXPENSIVE clothing routine...Oh! And I don’t have “good” clothes! My clothes are my clothes! I don’t save things for occasions-My life is a joy and I want to enjoy my items ever day. They won’t do me any good when I’m dead! What are you waiting for?

I’m minimizing a lot of things, but clothes is one category that I won’t do. I love mixing it up everyday and playing with colors. I’ve actually added a bar to my closet to separate tops and bottoms, but... they all fit comfortably in my closet. It’s not overwhelming. I also shop at a local charity shop that supports a woman’s shelter, where you can donate clothes to as well. I’m usually dressed up every day of the week, with church, school, and work, but relax in leggings in the evening. I also live in an area where I can experience all four seasons within a week. To me, picking out a colorful vibrant outfit the night before is relaxing. I’ve tried to minimize my wardrobe many times and was never happy.

Only thing about having a really small amount of clothes is they wear out quicker as your wearing them more often & you can run out of stuff to wear if it is all in the washing. So you would have to do your washing more often so you don't run out.

I created a 'uniform' for my outside activities (like work, and my work generally requires casual clothing btw except for special events) and home activities (lousy everything) and the in betweens (e.g. just go 8 buildings away quickly to grab some groceries). Since Lilly makes classic styles, you can wear them for years and never look dated.

Monique Lehnhardt same here!!!!I love color and it’s required that I stand out at my job as a customer service rep especially since my employer does not provide a uniform. I choose the challenge of 33 items so that like Joshua stated they are all items that are my favorites and can be mixed up together. I respect the black white group of people as well as the “personal uniforms” and understand this thought process. For me I love to express myself in color and it makes me feel good yet my clothing doesn’t control my life or burdens me with laundry care, organization etc. I feel like I can shop my closet every day and have unlimited combinations. I also have the one in one out rule and shop 2nd hand. Feels good to have an ally with this concept here with you!

💯 One caveat to quality (I agree) is if those few go to items that look beat up but are comfy on bad days. Also take care of your things (stuff). I wash all clothes (except underwear on hot as advised by microbiologists) in Coldwater and hang dry or use extra low heat setting for longer. Learn how to sew for small fixes and treat small stains with hydrogen/baking soda paste (sit for 30 min) or Tide Pen if out. Most consumer goods incl clothes since being made overseas by cheap often exploited labor are now very cheap and disposable. There’s much less incentive to take care of things (stuff) and make them last. When we feel less then we buy/eat/do more then. It’s an illusion but makes Big Corp Trillions worldwide. They use proven psychological techniques to market/sell incl social media/YT and celebrities. Find ways to feel good about yourself independent of what you wear/own/do. You are enough as you are.

Compared to friends we do own fewer clothes but - as a family of four - still spend roughly 2100€ (about 2300 US$) on clothing. How come? Well, we are not buying cheap. We buy mostly second hand sturdy brands. But sometimes there's just not what you're looking for second hand, so we buy as sturdy, ecologicaly und socially sustainable as possible (eg GOTS standard) which is a little more expensive when buying but usually comes out the same when looking at durability.

One more tip: decide what colors look good on you and begin there. I look like death-warmed-over in black. I am better in brown, blue, forest green, cream, aqua, and a rich red if at all. I don't have the money to start over a whole new wardrobe. I decluttered those colors which were no good for my complexion, and now I only buy the colors I look great in.

The last tip is the only one that I will disagree with. I prefer to start from the position of 'I'm getting rid off ALL of this...which one's will I wish I had kept?' rather than forcing myself to choose who gets the 'curb treatment'. I prefer to choose who to keep, but that'a Konmari methodology so to each their own. As long as you end the day with less shit...its a win.

Also, purchasing clothes made out of natural fibers...cotton, linen, bamboo, silk, wool...are better for the environment, they will decompose when they have to be discarded. For me, I just like dealing with less choices in my closet. As you say, everything that I now have is my favorite. I used to own others that I disliked, but felt "obligated or guilty" for not wearing them. More freedom!

Clothes are a hard item for most women to part with. I now live in a hot climate so only need 1 wardrobe. In the past year I have purged over 5 large bags of good clothes to charity. Now I’m on my 2nd sweep and being ruthless. However, I don’t get rid of clothes I wear because I use them and have spent money on them. I only donate clothes I don’t use and also don’t continue to buy clothes since I have enough.

I never throw or give away my clothing. I keep them and force myself to wear them. I tell myself, that if I bought the item, I have to wear it. If I think, that buying a particular item was a mistake, I tell myself to get wiser and buy after some consideration and review. So now I stopped buying duplicate items. I still have huge wardrobe and I kind of cut my expenses on clothing

The thing is to enjoy what you wear...So yeah your method helps to save money, but I you get rid of what you don't like and you keep your favorite, not only it is gonna save money because your are gonna realize how good it feels to wear your favorite clothes everyday but also you are gonna be more happy and less stressed about what to wear I think...

5 shoes 5 pants 5 shirts 5 swetters 5 jackets = 3.125 different combinations Make them versetile, distinctivly different but still matching, durable favorits worth to repair and taken care of, they will take care of you. 100% natural stuff that gets better with age and care. You then add an extra item above and you get a years worth of new combinations.

I also live where there are 4 strong seasons. Consider having 2 small wardrobes: one for cool/cold weather and one for warm/hot weather. Some pieces (like tee shirts, cardigans) might be good for all seasons. I just packed away big winter boots, hats, scarves, really wooly sweaters, etc. and brought out the capris and lighter dresses for summer.

Having worked in fashion I own many clothes however I’ve come to wear only 2 Marino wool nylon blend shirts on alternating days. Where I shower with & wash my shirt & dry it each night to wear the next morning smelling great. Barely have anything to wash now except under garments monthly. As most jeans recommend washing irregularly anyhow. Laundry days are so far between. This has also reduced the wear & tear on my “good” clothes. & freed up soo much time especially as I don’t have to decide what to wear every day. Granted I have 7 backups of the same shirt & a months supply of the same socks and same jocks. I do feel like a cartoon character lol. Also stock up on these clothes only during end of financial year sales or Boxing Day.

Joshua, it is a fact that having less clothes are better in many aspects. When my mother died three years ago I was wearing my black Tshirts during two or three months. I noticed that it was quite easier to get ready in the morning because there were just 3 or 4 tshirts to choose. I've reduced my wardrobe considerably since then. I suggest everybody should try. Success to you. Irene from Brazil

I never knew what it was until recently but decision fatigue was really getting in my way. I decided one thing I could cut back on was time preparing and deciding on clothing. I work in a very busy office so I have about ten of the same pants, twelve of the same shirts in different colors, and about eight same button down sweaters in different colors since it’s cold inside. It’s been life changing to not think about what to wear all the time.

Me too. I gave up on white pants years ago because of my dogs, cats, and horses. And grandkids! But there are lots of serviceable fabrics (denim, etc.) that hold up and wash well. And around the house, doing my projects, gardening, etc. I just wear the ones with holes. I have 2 pants and 2 tee shirts and a sweatshirt for painting, yard work, art, animals, etc. That way the nicer things stay nice.

I absolutely love hooded sweatshirts and yesterday I decided to part with one of my shirts that is (ahem) a little on the small side. So when I went through my closet I was amazed to find that I "only" have ten sweatshirts, which is a LOT less than I thought I had. I was quite proud! =) Now when I buy clothes, I make an effort to replace rather than add to my current collection.

This is so hard for me to downsize. I guess I have a hundred moods, because I always put something on that feels right that day and reflects my mood or feeling that day. At least I've stopped myself from buying party dresses, one is actually more than enough for me. My wardrobe used to look like some kind of theatre wardrobe (Said by my sisters daughter, but you know kids tells you like it is. 😊😁💕) I will probably keep most of my clothes, but don't buy new often anymore. If I want to buy something now I always first ask myself if I can use it both for work and at home. Then it might be okay to buy after reflecting on some other questions like: Is it my style? Do I feel relaxed in it? Is it comfortable? Is the model and cut flattering for my figure? Is it made of natural fibre? Do I look good in that colour? Do I have something else that I probably would choose to wear instead of this item? Will I wear it a lot? Do I feel like the best version of myself in it? Do I love it? Do I need it or just want it? Does my economy allow me to buy and pay for it right now without any problems, or should I rather spend the money on something else that is more important, or should I just save the money? After these questions it's more easy for me to decide if I actually still want to spend money on the item or not. 😊

I could have four to five pair of shoes. As a woman. I would have my walking shoes, sandals for hot days or the beach, high heels that are comfortable and go with anything, comfortable scuff type shoes slip on or lace up smart casual, and a pair of smart boots for colder weather. In addition I may have some uggs or slippers too.

Lol. Black, white, denim with maybe a splash of red or pink and one or two bits of blue/purple. Mostly black white and jeans for me tho. One or two khaki/navy/dark grey pants/shorts (it gets hot and humid down here and mosquitos are afoot in the summer so black is a magnet for them...hence often white and light for me for the summers Lol). And mostly solid or plaid/checkered. I guess the classic white tee (long or short or tank) is my “signature.” Lol. All cool tones tho. I don’t look good in “warm” tones at all and excessive patterns tend to scramble my brain too much. Lol. When I need “variety” or a splash of color, it’s often just the second shirt over the white tee and basic pants.

This kind of videos confuses me. Most of the people say that you need to rotate your pants and outwear almost daily. Also, they say that shoes must be rotated daily from many hygiene, health and lifespan of material reasons. The tops of course need to be changed daily especially if you sweat a lot, do many activities and so on. Please let me know how could somebody follow these advices with only few clothing items? Is it ok to go to work in the same pants, same shoes and same outwear Monday-Friday?
