I hesitated watching this, but I'm going on a trip soon, and I find that I pack too many tops. Your tips are excellent, and I've traveled plenty (I'm not "young") and I could've used these tips then!
My rule for a checked bag is whatever is in there, you have to be ok with never seeing it again. If you love love love a certain item, then pack it in your carry on. Pretend you’ll never see your checked bag again. And that’s the things that go in the checked bag. We shouldn’t have to do this, airlines should be more responsible but, whatever....you can’t have everything. Love the reenactments, so funny.
Yes. I have some kind of weird mental anxiety about packing to go on a trip. Doesn’t matter if it’s for a weekend, week or month; by plane, train, or automobile. I always have good intentions to start the packing process a few days before I leave, but other things come up and somehow that never happens. Knowing I’ll be SO stressed by the time I’m packed makes me not want to go, no matter how much fun it will be when I arrive. I need HELP!
I've always thought baggage handling should be added to the Olympics. "There's Joe from United with the 10'8" 50lb Samsonite toss for the world record and gold medal!"
Jeff P I’m not trying to defend the bag handlers, but since they have very limited time between flights(usually about 45 minutes)to unload the bags and then get the next set of bags on the flight they have to hurry and “throw” the bag around to get them on and off the plane. Also those same bag handlers are usually the people who guide the plane into the arrival gate, go on the plane and clean it, and prepare it for the people getting on the plane to leave, and also guide and push the plane out of the gate. They have a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it in.
100% they are some of the hardest workers out there! This was moreso just a tip for people to protect their personal items, no shade to the baggage handlers! I got to work with them a lot as a flight attendant and they were the coolest dudes 👍🏼
As my friends and I always say, “I’ve never wished I packed heavier!” Minimalist just makes things easier, especially if you have to handle your own luggage abroad.
Suggestions... 1: Put you underwear in Zippered plastic bag before putting them in your shoes (more hygienic). 2: Put your shoes in a plastic bag first ( hygienic).
Nichie Speaks I was thinking that too! That’s how I pack when I’m going on vacation and it doesn’t run the risk of the bacteria on the bottom on my shoes getting on my clothes
As a former flight attendant myself I did some things way different from you. I bought shower caps for less than a dollar and put my shoes into them. I also put my shoes at the bottom of the suitcase. In my carry on I always put an extra pair of clothes as you never know when your suitcase will get lost. As for valuables, my advice is don't bring them, especially if you are a tourist somewhere. It will attract pickpockets etc...wear the jewelry you need and that's it. The best thing to do is learn to consolidate. If you get there and find out you absolutely need something you can always go buy it.
This extra outfit advice is 100% on point that's what I was going to say including socks. Even if you're flying from snow to the Caribbean. Because you never know when you're going to have to make an emergency landing and be stuck overnight and some terminal and it closed the airport freezing to death. An extra outfit and some socks can save your life. But some of those valuables people have to take for them are necessities for work so that can't be avoided.
How long where you a Flight Att. And why did you leave? I was gonna ask the RU-vidr here, but she has too many comments...lol! But yes I'm very intrigued as to why some flight attendants quit pretty much right away (or within a year), while others go on to stay "forever" and love it!!! What do you think they love that you didn't?
Hi , I flew for 9 years. I did love it , I got married ended up having a miscarriage on a flight whe working. It wasn't very exciting. Luckily, a commuter who had just finished a flight took over for me for the duration of the flight. Flight attendants have a very high rate of miscarriages.
R. Davis…You nailed it. I used to travel overseas A LOT for work. When you go to places where people don’t know you, it doesn’t matter that you have an outfit per day. No one cares what you wear. You won’t see those people ever again. And if you travel to places where people do know you and will see you every day, they will understand that you are traveling and so wearing the same outfits don’t matter. And 99.99% of the places you travel to, will have stores where you can buy clothing so if it comes down to it and you need it, buy a shirt or jacket or socks. Also if you stay at hotels, they have a laundry service. You can always have them wash your clothes. They usually do a great job at it. You don’t need to pack shampoos or toothpaste. Surprise! They have those things elsewhere. Hotels have them too…for free! There are clothing made for travel. Quick drying underwear that you can wash at the hotel sink and hung to dry. Light weight Merino wool shirts and hoodies that regulate body temperature and wick away sweat and doesn’t smell. Wearing expensive jewelry or watches or clothing or shoes just make you an easy target. I don’t how many stories I’ve heard from friends and colleagues about their Rolexes or cameras stolen. When you travel, travel smart and not travel to impress people because no one cares.
Ziploc gallon bags are perfect for me. Worn shoes mixed with clean clothes is simply GROSS! She probably doesn't mind since she laid clean clothes on the floor anyway. Equally, suitcases on the bed... yuck.
I absolutely loved your flight attendant and passenger skit!! Too funny but so true!! You rock girl!! Loved it!! Thanks for sharing and for all the helpful hints and Ideas. Bless your heart.
Quick tip for yall that check lugggage. Take a pic of all of your stuff before you check it. An airline lost my 1 suitcase i checked and made me write down all of the items i had in there(even specific colors of shirts/dresses) in case it was found they would know it was definitely mine😁
i recently saw this tip and realize I have thrown away so many contacts cases! I rarely travel enough to have keep things so compact (just an overnight so my toiletries take up more space than my clothes). I have a great hanging bag for toiletries that I find hard to leave at home, but for flying, using the smaller makeup bag makes so much more sense. I will look for some of my cases and maybe buy a couple for use in the future. I'm looking at some trips with plane flights in the next year. It's been over 5 years since I have flown anywhere, so it is like relearning efficiency every time I fly. I'm always thinking about what I'm gonna wish I had once I get somewhere. One of the trips will be to a colder climate so i will struggle with packing for warmth since winter clothes take up more space. I know I will just have to wear the heaviest coat I want on the trip and hope it is warm enough (my puffy quilted full length coat will probably not make the trip!)
Do a test run. Fill up your travel containers with products you will take with you and then use the filled containers at home for the same length of time you'll be away to see if you're taking too much or too little of the product and adjust accordingly. I only wash my hair every 3 days or so and I'm able to use a smaller bottle than I had been taking. I do allow for an extra day or 2 in case there are flight or other unforeseen delays.
One thing I always do - just in case I have to check my bag at the gate - make sure I have tags with my name and phone or e-mail contact on both the outside and the inside of my bag. On one flight, my tag was ripped off my suitcase, so I take extra tags.
I absolutely love how you have a little travel wallet and a pocket sewn inside your jacket to put it in. I will absolutely pick one wear-everywhere item- such as a chambray shirt- and have my tailor install a little pocket if I travel to a destination where pickpocketing is a major issue (like Spain)
I agree completely. I’ve had some flights get delayed and had to spend the night in a hotel room. It felt so good to take a shower, put on clean clothes (undies!), and fix my hair and apply some makeup. And you’re right - replacing makeup can get expensive, even if you grab some from the cosmetics vending machine ($12 for travel mascara!). You just never know...
When flying more than 10 hours international, I'll take 2x change of underwear and 1x change of outer clothes (2x if summer) and some washing liquid in carry-on. I've always thought it was overkill and always did it. On our most recent trip to Australia, our checked luggage was delayed almost a week! I was so glad we each had 2 days' clothing and the ability to wash it.
I never check my bags in, and I always use the vacuum seal bags so I can fit a ton in my carry-on. If you don't have a vacuum, they have the type you can roll the air out of. I did that for a 14-day trip.
This is the best travel packing video I have ever seen on RU-vid. I hate how some RU-vidrs have their liquids ALL OVER THE SHOW. I cringe so hard and I imagine all the people that are relying on this information and end up getting hassled by the TSA because of bad advice. Thank you for setting the record straight and doing it the right way so people won't end up late or rubber gloved in unmentionable places...
In all honesty, that needs to be made illegal. No airport has the right to damage your luggage in any way, and every single luggage gets tears or scratches from that disrespectful treatment. It boils my blood, and I always file complaints with the airline, and get my compensation.
Sir Babz It literally does? What are you on about? Have you ever flown? They pay me for my luggage, or give me an entirely new luggage. I opt for being given a new luggage while the warranty of my own is still applicable, because I can get it fixed for free, and walk away with a new luggage that I acquire for free. If anything inside is damaged due to the damage the luggage suffered, it’s also covered. Learn your rights, imbecile.
Watching this video before a 14 day trip to GB with carry on/personal item only! Super excited. Another pro tip: you don't necessarily need to pack shampoo/conditioner. To save space, I've just bought items like that once I arrive to my destination.
💀💀💀💀💀!!!! I’ve watched them toss my double stroller & I TRY not to be “that passenger” but the moment we seen the wheel literally come off my stroller, b/c homeboy wanted to practice Olympic shot put, ohhhhh best believe momma was hot!
Great tips and tricks. I'm a flight attendant too. Like you said, bring a sweater and light coat in your carry on as well. Inevitably, the flight temperature at some point will not be to your liking. Most domestic carriers don't provide blankets for the main cabin. If you pack a sweater or light coat in your carry on, you will be comfortable at all times during the flight :)
Yes, and a rolled-up sweater or shawl serves as an excellent back pillow. Plus, during the flight, put that cardigan sweater on backwards. It is easier than pulling on correctly and the solid back of a cardigan covers like a blanket.
I don’t know how people travel with shorts and a t shirt even to cooler temperature parts of the country. The plane is usually cold. I always bring a sweater or light jacket and I remain comfortable plus I don’t like anything touching me and my bare skin be it legs or arms.
This video is honestly so helpful, thank you. The skits were so funny XD I really laughed at the gate agent's "aggressive politeness", and the traveler's kind of zoned out/exhausted look and demeanor, they were spot on.
Anne-Sophie Gill They are affordable, but, as a retailer, I ask you to: Please Avoid Amazon. Buy from a human being. Save somebody’s job. If a low price is crucial, try Tuesday Morning, Marshall’s, etc. You don’t have to wait for it, and you kept your money in the community.
used mine from christmas for Rome just this week and it was so cool because my backpack was less bulky and it made packing so much easier - one cube regular clothes, one cube temple attire for the LDS Rome temple - and packing it all back in there on the last day was soooo easy! and I reserved the tiny cube for souveniers and candy - what goes in there, I am allowed to buy (magnets, dish towels, aprons and such...), other souvenirs I am not allowed to buy 🤣
@@alhambralions5985 Not all of us are close enough to stores for trips like that for it to not be a colossal waste of gas money. Amazon is a life & money saver for my entire family, not to mention a saving grace from the mass amounts of anxiety I get driving through a city just to go to a store on the other side of it for some packing cubes. Use Amazon if you want, it's not going away anytime soon.
It truly is amazing what a difference proper packing makes! Good video. It took me many years and many trips before I figured all this out. It's an art, for sure!
As a current FA, I love this. You covered the basics! I have had my bag left in the jetway, when I was commuting to work on a transcon!!! WTF??? This video was hilarious and helpful!
A few things I bring that are suprisingly handy that nobody talks about for traveling is the stasher bag (snacks and water proofing your phone for the beach, also as a cool compress or heat pad) Hero clip (also small and incredibly multi use, worth the price, binder clips to use as laundry clips, holding a snack bag shut, or blinds or a wardrobe malfunction. also to use as a towel clip for beach chairs (I use the med/big sized ones), TSA approved travel padlock (wire one) a lot of uses for that as well. Niteize mini s biners with locks (can use these for pool lockers to adhere the key to your swim suit and not have to worry about it. Also useful for "locking" the zippers of your small purse while out on the town to make it more difficult for would-be pickpocketers so they pick a different target. I use a be quick from jujube as a packing cube for my underthings that comes with a strap so when I get to my destination I can use it as a small crossbody also use a jujube be light as a larger packing cube that is my larger tote or beach bag at my destination. I use a microfiber towel for my beach towel and a cotton Turkish shower towel which is thin enough to double as a beach cover/sarong I bring 1 ea. So I don't get sandy if I use the other one outdoors on the sand. Extra wide headband for its regular purpose or a eye mask to keep light out if I want to take a nap, can also get it wet to help keep the back of your neck cool Christmas decoration suction cup to hang my soap pouch on the side of the shower out of the water to dry. A few ultra light dry bags instead of packing cubes I use like stuff sacks for a water destination. I am obsessed with the matador soap pouches. Toothpaste tabs and powdered dry shampoo are the bomb. And there's more but I hope this helped somebody!
07:31 I LAUGHED SO HARD 🤣🤣🤣🤣 my stress level watching these bags thrown off is immeasurable... I cannot believe someone else is talking about it... I thought I was the only one who is annoyed about it 😂😂
I work as an agent at an airline here in my hometown, and it's small, so everyone does several jobs. Sometimes when we have to go from being a counter agent to gate agent to ramp agent we change clothes and head to the job we were asked to do. Working on ramp, I have seen bags fall off the belt loader. Others toss bags because they're so heavy and tossing them is quicker to relieve pain. Then if bags have fragile things in them, they'll be a fragile sign and everyone is pretty careful not to put anything heavy on top of it. We're also very careful with baby items, such as car seats, strollers, play pens etc. Our biggest thing to remember is that passengers are watching us handle their luggage from the windows. So we try to remain steady and pace our selves. It's not always easy to do that in certain weather. Obviously if it's raining outside or snow and ice makes it sleak we put down ice to reduce the risk of falling, but we're still not suppose to run (common sense) but when it's cold out and we have to make a deadline with our time, YES we are timed from the minute the plane lands, we have a certain amount of time to make sure everyone is checked in before the 30 minute cut off, and NO after 30 minutes, even 1 minute late, we cannot check in passengers, it's not up to us, the system automatically shuts us out from being able to do so. We sympathize with our passengers but there's nothing we can do even if they're a few minutes or seconds late. After that we're timed to pull the bridge to the plane, to get everyone on board, to put away and take out luggage from the previous flight and also add gate checked bags, all of it we're timed on, and if WE go over that time. We get a late departure and are penalized for it. Trust me, our priority being agents is to serve our customers to the best of our ability, and we apologize if something goes wrong out of our control or on our watch. I personally handle bags gently. I'm only 4'9 so I have to be careful anyway. But sometimes traveling light and making all this space really helps. This extra research will help avoid the gate agents policy to tell people what can and cannot go.
@@babywaffles9985 I wish you all the best and all the strength to do this difficult job, I'm sorry if my comment was rude, I totally understand your situation and definitely understood more through your explanation... I wish there was an easier technology and easier system from the higher ups so your job would be less tasking on you,,, thank you for your insight and grateful for your help 🙏🏻 ( excuse my English it's not my first language 😅)
@@FunSoSoToTo no worries, I didn't think your comment was rude in the slightest. I just wanted to add my intake on it. But her reenactments weren't far from the truth. I have seen people handle baggage that way and it's not something i condone, but it happens
Me too. Carried it with me on our Disney World . Lasts so long . I carry it with me when I am eating out or waiting on an appointment. I just put my hearings aids on Stream and can then watch a movie or anything else on my phone.
Thank you! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Denver this summer and will be first time on a plane this was giving me anxiety! Thank you for breaking it down on the best way to pack, how to accommodate for more space and how to store your liquids and jewelry! Also the carry on bad of course
You're hilarious! The impersonations were def accurate. 😂 Great tips especially the one about rolling your clothes. I started doing that a few yrs ago, and it saves so much space.
I’ve watched a ton of videos like this but I love you best! You’re my kind of person. You talk just enough about it and move on. Thanks for making these!
Great tips. I've also packed an extra outfit (including underwear) in my personal bag. Learned the hard way when bags have been delayed or lost! Happy Travels All!
I've traveled the world many times, and I've tried 20 different ways to pack literally. I still change it up, depending on how long im.going. But I as of the last couple years taking less than I need, and buying it when I get to where I'm going. To each his, or her own. Good video
Loved your '*bucks' cup especially, but you nailed the traveler girl spot-on!...I've had the last leg of my journey be on a prop jet that all (larger) carry-ons have to be gate-checked, this is common in Europe. Good work.
I have a few great travel tips. Put a tracker in all your bags your travelling with. The tracker is super small (they don't take up any space) then you put an app on your phone. That way if lost or stolen. You can show airport staff or police. Where it is on the app and they can get it. You can also get trackers for computers too. Also a personal alarm on backpack and sling bags. Make sure it easy to reach on strap of bag is best. You can press and get help or scare threat away (people/animals) this has been great for me, I hope it is for you. I liked the vid. I learnt something knew and will do next time.
I especially loved the “personal bag” portion of your video! I am primarily a carry-on only traveler, but am also aware that gate check-in has become more common. My personal bag always includes my wallet, documents, electronics, chargers, liquids bag, makeup/toiletries bag, medications, first aid and...undergarments 😬😂🤣
The last few times I have flown (it has been a few years though), my carry on was always gate checked. I use a backpack as my personal bag and keep a change of clothes and toiletries in it. Fortunately, I don't need many electronics when I travel. My phone and headphones will do. I am already stressing about making sure I have chargers ( can never keep up with all those cords as I am accustomed to having to keep one or two work phones with me sometimes and they each have different types of charges that are both different from my personal phone!) silly me to stress since my next trip is a while away and has nothing to do with work; therefore, I will need only the one charger for my personal phone. I do need to look into some of those little containers you used though. I have used multiple types of small bags in the past, but having a set of hard containers would be more handy.
When I first came to the US I was always in the lowliest boarding group and if that’s the case it’s more likely than not that there won’t be anymore overhead space it seems. And that’s why all of these people crowd the gate waiting for their group to be called rather than following instructions and sitting in a comfy chair. It seems that charging for checked luggage really caused this insanity!
Patricia Beetschen I always use a normal bag (preferably plastic) to fully cover the shoes but have found that the cheap hotel shower caps (unused) are useful to use as a food cover for e.g. half a melon, bowl of food...
Hello, I wanted to say thank you so much! I'm going to be traveling in about a week for the first time for work, and unfortunately I will be alone. This has been very helpful and has helped me become mentally prepared. This job I have will allow me to travel a lot through out the year and after this video I am now much more excited. Thank you so much!
Natalia Bruscino My first flying experience was for work about 6 years ago and I was SO anxious that my doctor actually prescribed me 2 .25mg ativan, one for each flight lol. And to be honest I really did need them, that’s how stressed I was! But it really does get easier and more comfortable with each flight. You should definitely sign up for every rewards program for airlines and hotels! Traveling for work can be a perk in itself by just getting to experience the world but the rewards you get back from those memberships while not paying a dime are the best. I haven’t paid for a vacation in years! I wish you the best of luck!
I'm a new subscriber. I travel quite a bit (with husband & kids) in the US & internationally. I'm always looking for ways to be more efficient with packing or make it a better experience. I have lots of stories of checked bags being delayed (or making the flight without us.) We've always gotten things back- sometimes after a few months. It's nice to have what you really need in your carry-on. Your reenactments are hilarious!
You are soooooo good at acting out scenes! Lol I hope you realise that that is a very special talent here on RU-vid, not everyone nails it so well! Great video and insight, thank you!
I honestly go to dollar tree once I’ve arrived and then buy my shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant (I’ve never flown but I have had long car travels)
Can tell you don't fly budget in Europe, that 2nd bag would never pass as a personal item, it's a handbag/laptop bag size max (some don't allow a 2nd bag at all)
Just to add to the Anker battery pack. i also have one of those as well and spent two hours researching it and it was one of the best you could get for the price its sold at. I bought mine for $40. I've had it for years and never had any issues charging it or my devices. Even charging my iPad Air multiple times as well as my Nintendo Switch.
THIS WAS A FABULOUS VIDEO! so spot on!!!!! I laughed out loud when she shows the guy on the tarmac, as he is THROWING the luggage onto the truck!!!! SO friggin' true!
sunshineyellow If I'm traveling from place to place the Kondo Method works best so I can find stuff. Otherwise I try all kinds of ways to fit the most in. I don't like rolling, too many wrinkles. Packing cubes all the way.
A trick I learned the hard way when I took a one-week trip to Germany with my husband. I was rushing to pack, threw all my clothes into one bag and threw all of his clothes into his bag. Guess whose bag was lost.....for days!? Mine. I had to wear the same dress for 3 days. I wore a friend's huge bathrobe at night and I learned a very important lesson. I now always carry a change of clothing in my cabin bag. I always split clothing, some for me, some for my husband and we have not had a lost bag since then!
I was on a plane and watched a whole cart full of bags fall on the ground and the guys had a 5-minute conversation as to who would pick them up ( obs I could not hear them but the body language said it all)! That's why I never check a bag. I have a Northface Base Camp Duffel and I used for my 10 day trip to Europe and it was worth every penny.
this is so real..the power adapter is perfect..slim...i see people carrying those gigantic headphones, seem that the rule is one of each..i see people carrying 3 purses, three snickers, so much jewel, so much stuff..thank you ..very good.
For me, the personal item is for inflight use. I must have a bag underneath the seat in front of me. It holds my phone, pillow, blanket, snacks, headphones, etc. Basically it’s my survival kit for the trip. It’s the most important bag to be honest 😂
Make sure to keep a change of clothes (with underwear) in there in case something happens to your other bag. One time I got stuck for three days in another country with a lost bag and I wasn’t prepared. It wasn’t fun. Don’t risk that happening to you.
POV: one month from today on you’ll be on a 21 hour trip with two layovers and are afraid that your luggage will get lost in the current airport chaos. So you’re trying to prepare for the worst 🥲
Scott-e-vest has great clothing with many pockets, both interior and exterior. I have filled them with as many items as a small carry-on bag, including wallets, passports, laptops, electronics, and full-sized document files. In addition, all pockets have strong zippers, so essentially just throw it onto the x-ray belt without having to remove anything.
I love your videos! So interesting and helpful. Personally, I only take a carry on and you'd be surprised how much you can fit in one, but for all the new flyers you should know that the standard "carry-on" luggage size differs from airlines. I have a Nicole Miller carry on bag and it was a bit larger than the airline I flew with allowed. So, instead of chancing being separated from my bag, I took a backpack instead. Easy on and off with no fuss.
Your bags have a higher chance of getting lost when you check them at the gate or even worse when you check them outside at the entrance. Check your bags at the main airline desk upon entering the airport if you are intentionally checking. Put a big label what shows the flight number and destination on your luggage.
I'm going to France and Italy next summer as a kind of senior trip after we graduate (one of my teachers is in charge of the trip) and im doing a ridiculously amount of research because I'm never flied before.
I usually pack my shoes or sneakers in a sandwich bag.And to save so much of space I will never carry a curling iron with me.All I did is to style up my hair with a donut bun or style up with heatless curls by using hairspray.waterspray and braids.Or use scarf to wrap my hair.Leave it overnight. And wake up next morning with a nice curls.I dont pack any shampoo or soap and towels coz hotel do supply us with all those items.
I was once stranded in the old section of an airport 11 hours! Sitting that long I got cold and my feet were cold too! From that time forward I always keep a warm pair of socks, a sweater, emergency snacks, and a water bottle with me in my carry-on bag (the 11 hours I was stranded were late on a Sunday, and the few shops and food places were closed, so I had access to nothing but a water fountain during that time). That was my worst nightmare while traveling. Well, that, and the time our small plane flew right over the wreckage of another small plane that had crashed into a hill the day before, just short of the runway in the Caribbean...
I always have some snacks and a bottle of water with me. I also bring those slipper socks and a wrap/scarf that I can use to wrap around in the plane when it gets chilly.
13 years ago, I had about half of my European tour group had their luggage missing. They had to wear the same things. I saw a mother & her daughter get their stuff back right before some of our tour group boarded a flight to Paris, France. I had a woman, who’s a seamstress, so before her husband bought the pants at a store, she borrowed the tape measure to measure the pants. So cool!
From my experience, I also suggest packing a change of clothes in the carry on, just in case you are separated from your carry on and there is a delay. Even if it is just a t-shirt and shorts or yoga pants.
You are so funny! I love the scene with you tossing the baggage on the table. And the airline attendant who tells you that you must check your bag at the gate...Priceless! It is so true to life! The haters who disliked your video were probably some of the airline workers who do that. Lol! Thanks for such and informative and entertaining video. Have you ever considered going into acting? You are great at it.
