Are you going on a cruise and trying to pack light, or even carry-on only? Packing for a cruise doesn't have to be so complicated! Here are tips, tricks and hacks for how to pack carry-on only for a cruise.
In this video, I show how you can pack for a 7 day cruise in a carry-on suitcase. If you're going on a short cruise, packing in a carry-on bag will work easily. Longer cruises require more planning & a good cruise packing list!
The luggage you choose makes a difference when packing light for a cruise. I used a Level8 luggage set in this video & love it!
I've partnered with Level 8 Luggage & they have sponsored this video.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
LEVEL8 Luggage (Code LIFEWELLCRUISED10 for 10% off): www.dpbolvw.net/click-1007209...
What I have: Carry-on Textured Luggage black, 24" Textured Luggage checked bag dark grey (I have the set), set of 4 packing cubes.

I’ve had a travel job for the last 34 years and I am the most minimal packer of all my friends. I usually have half the luggage they have and somehow they end up borrowing what I’ve brought 😳 I tend to pack basic solid colors for evening wear and bring bold statement jewelry. Completely agree with you on the packing cubes. They are fabulous. Oh, and always at least two swim suits. Worst thing ever to try to squish into a wet suit 😬

I love using packing cubes. Instead of taking multiple bottles/boxes of meds, i put just a few Tums, allergy meds, etc into individual mini baggies that I label. I also do this with my daily vitamins and prescription meds. Then i put all the mini baggies into one quart size zip lock. This way all meds are together and organized while taking up very little space in my carry on.

Good going Becky. I do exactly the same but have gone far more extreme with every possible medication I could need ( from stool softeners to fever reduces). I include a teeth repair kit ( totally works) as well as bandaids, spray bandaid, gauze, etc.

@@julieb7882 one thing you can do a couple weeks before your trip is talk to your pharmacy about a week long or how ever many days you have "blister pack" of your needed meds takes up very little space and is usually seperated by time frame needed as well and comes with med documentation.

Thanks Ilona - lots of good tips! One thing I do, especially for longer cruises is to take a long, black, jersey tank dress and a few sheer tops or pashmina's. That way one dress has several looks and can be worn for evening on a few of the nights. I have a pair of ballet flats that have different sparkly clips....one pair of shoes, many different looks!

Keep pairs of larger stud earrings if they've come off the studs. Hot glue them to the smallest foldback clips - instant shoe clips to jazz up your dinner outfit. If you have bought TWO pairs of the same earrings, then you will have amazing matching earrings and shoeclips. I also hot glue small magnets to the backs of a few clothes pegs to do double duty in bathroom and for keeping tickets, itineraries etc on your cabin wall.

A little-utilized area of carry-on bags are the “channels” created by the handles. Put smaller, slim items between the handles such as a curling iron, flip flops, small toiletry kit, rolled up socks … the possibilities are numerous for this area that is usually overlooked. Then you just place your packing cubes on top. Filling in these channels is just as space-saving as stuffing your shoes.

Don't forget, you are also allowed a personal item that fits under the seat and just check the size allowed for that underseat item. You can probably fit quite a bit in that underseat carry-on item. Just pack a tinier purse in your underseat carry-on or use a belly pack.

What we always packed for boat trips that also work for cruises: small first aid kit (alcohol pads, band-aids and bandages, gauze, wound tape, sterile tweezers, small tubes of antiseptic/burn cream, antibiotic ointment, ipecac, throat spray or lozenges, Tums/rolaids/alka seltzer or pepto bismal, aspirin/tylenol, pain relief cream, ace bandage, non-drowsy seasickness meds. I'd add a can of Microbian or a small pack of disinfectant wipes for anything that you're going to touch: doorknobs, hangers, bathroom switches and faucets/commode flusher button, coffee maker, remotes, light and ac switches. To this, must-adds are crystallized ginger, ginger gum, sunburn relief cream. All of this fits in a very small cosmetic bag or packing cube, and while you hope you never need it, the mark-ups are insane in most ports, popular destinations and probably on the cruise ships. Really enjoy your videos.

I am a carry-on only with a backpack traveler and completely agree with all your points. Packing cubes are a must! And mix and match outfits all around the same color. People are not going to remember what you wore. Contact cases are great for face serums, foundation, face lotions, etc. Take advantage of every single space in the suitcase. Great video today! Now, if I could just convince my husband to not be the overpacked. :D

Ha! We are the opposite! My husband travels for work and can go for 2-3 weeks with just a carry-on. He takes he’s computer and some work necessities in his backpack. Sometimes he even needs to take a hard hat and still manages to fit it into a carry-on. I, on the other hand, have a huge anxiety about being caught without something I’m going to need. I’m working on it and I’m getting better. 😂

Thanks for the info. We completed 19 days B2B including Iceland, Ireland and Norway with carry on only. DH wears his sport coat on the plane and hung it up for that overseas flight. My wardrobe is based around black slacks, black capris, black shirts and a black wrap skirt as well as one black knit dress. My blouses were sport knits and wool knits - all could be washed in the shower and would dry by the next day. We do use ship laundry services. Biggest help for me is the use of bar shampoo, conditioner, face soap plus a crystal deodorant as none are liquids so I can save space in the 311 bag.

Carry-on challenge accepted for 10-day Alaska cruise in August. It doesn't get colder in Skagway than a northern California winter, so it should work...but, that wind chill on fast boats might be another factor.

In 2019 we found super cheap flights to visit family in Germany (from the west coast of the U.S.). We needed to pack as light as possible, as with the cheap flight we also got no status! :D However that's when I found packing cubes and we were able to pack for our 3 1/2 week trip in a carry-on and the extra bag! Surprised us so much that it worked out so well that we planned on doing it for subsequent trips and cruises! With Covid shut downs, we're only now coming up on our first cruise since then, and that's how we're planning to pack again! It's been long enough that I had to look up packing with cubes, as well as cruising ideas. I'm glad I did with the changes there are! Your videos have become a staple for me now! :D Thank you!

Great Tips Llana!!! I enjoyed this video mostly because I’m thinking of using these tips, and some of your other video tips, not to overpack, so I can use my smaller luggage piece! I had recently made up my mind to only carry 3 dresses, wear each twice, adding accessories like scarfs, jewelry, and belts; plus one pair black pants and two tops. Everything is in the same color range! Oh, I’m packing for my first 8 day cruise! Thanks for sharing

I recently took a 5 night cruise with carry on only and it worked well. I flew business casual with black dress pants, a collared polo, and all black slip on Skechers sneakers. The dress pants and polo worked well for the flights and formal nights. The all black slip on Skechers made it easy getting through TSA and nobody noticed hey were not dress shoes on formal nights. You could also wear them with regular white socks and shorts for walking around the ship and ports. I used a toiletry bag for my personal item so I had no checked bags on the flights.

Ilana love your organizer. I usually pack a carryon and a tote for a month or more going anywhere from Paris to Africa, hiking to the opera. Shoes are most important and worth the space as difficult to buy shoes while on vacation. All clothes multi use and washable in sink. Always pack capsule wardrobe for 8 days no matter how long the trip. I pack a very extensive first aid kit of small amounts as again hard to get in other countries. And just realize you can get by with less!

I have to share this with you. I just came off a cruise ship a few hours ago. The first day of my cruise October 15th I saw a dress that I recognized. One of your dresses. I walked up to the lady and introduce myself. I asked her if she watches the RU-vid channel life well Cruised. Her face lit up, and she said yes. It was then that I told her I recognized the dress. So you're a big hit in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia area.

In my tote bag (size per tsa guidelines) I take non clothing items such my toiletry kit, small purse, flatiron, electronics and usually shoes or other items I can't fit in carry-on. I am into clothes and looking nice but have learned that for me, it's possible, easier, and more enjoyable to cruise/travel light!!

Thanks for another great video. I take photos of all our outfits that I am considering taking for myself, husband and son. I label and categorize them by what I plan for each pre, post and cruise day. This way, I have them visually at hand to view and can decide what I will ultimately pack. I also find a store that's in the mall and on-line, Chicos, sells outfits that easily fold up and don't wrinkle. You can have a few pieces and mix and match for numerous and versatile looks. The most difficult one for me to pack light is for a fjord cruise. In June, the day can be either warm or cold. There's no way of getting away without a double load, that would include a lightweight winter jacket. I love your great tip about purchasing toiletries when staying on-site the day before the cruise at Walgreens, etc. A word of note when travelling to an overseas destination (such as Asia, Europe and Australia); purchase the items in the duty-free shop or convenience store at the airport after security.

I think I may have a different definition of what a “just in case” outfit is. I ALWAYS take one no matter where or how I’m traveling. Even when I’m staying with my son in his home with a washing machine. I am the clumsiest person around. I have to have extra clothes because if I don’t, I’ll fall in the mud, spill down my shirt, rub up against wet paint, or a million other things. I have to have extra clothes or I will always look a mess. But other than that, I really love all your tips! Now my biggest problem is over buying snacks/foods for road trips 😂 I love your videos! First cruise was a checked bag with a backpack. Now I just finished 2 weeks in Europe with a 19" carry-on and backpack. Was so easy to get along. I am a worst case scenario packer, but now I make it fit in a plastic TSA bag. I now hate taking clothes I never wear. I went on a mission trip to Nicaragua last November and managed to get everything in a carry on and backpack after decades of over packing! We had laundry service but I still didn't need everything I packed. I have a different personal item and suitcase now (I had to check the other one on Avianca, it was 22lbs but 1/4 in too tall so they were sticklers); I think it will be much easier for a trip to Vegas and Nicaragua again. Packing cubes are a game changer and considering compression cubes. I have a lotion stick I use for head to toe, including face, now stick sunscreen, bar soap for both body and hair, small conditioner. Make up isn't really needed except for maybe church in Nicaragua but this time will put foundation in a contact lens case, small blush, mascara, and tinted lip gloss. Compact brush, hair ties. No dryer needed but I have a compact one in the Amazon cart. I found a compact make up kit for other trips. I put my supplements/meds in a pill box. I plan to get by with 2-3 pairs of shoe/sandals. The weekender bag I have now has a separate compartment in the bottom just for shoes. I love these videos and comments for other ideas.

I pack for winter locations. Since I layer for warmth, I’m able to have a heavy but compact bag. I wear the heaviest on flight days, including boots (and that might be all I have aside from gripper socks), sweaters, etc. What I don’t do is have multiple separate outfits, and rather use the same layers in new ways. So baselayers (2), trousers (2), shirts (4) and a skirt or dress. I’ve worn the heavy sweater, and might have another. But I go with finer weaves for the second. I bring three pair of wool socks, and three undies, two bras.

I have never been able to just do a carry on for a cruise, as I usually have to fly to the cruise port and usually will be spending at least a week not including the cruise at that location or nearby. One cruise, I start in 80 degree weather and the cruise is in 50 degree weather, so two different clothing categories are needed. Even cruising from my home port, required more than just a carry on, as formal wear was required for two nights. Laundry on the ship is a nightmare. You can't even get near the iron to iron anything. I do bring more of a capsule wardrobe, so I do limit what I take and layering is key in cold weather. I usually don't take more than 3 pairs of shoes. Thanks for all your tips & tricks!
