As a driver of a 2015 (last model year for 2WD) F-Type S for the last 5 years , there are things I do, but more aren't a big deal - e.g. I rarely sit in 1st gear at lights, as it is way too much drama, pulling away, when it goes green - I sit there in second gear. But my once serious piece of advice - if you have any car with paddles, that rotate with the steering wheel - get red tape and green tape for the tips of the shifters top & bottom, so you can be confident, even when shifting in a turn.

On my BMW 335i, my paddle shifters turn with the steering wheel. Arguably, awkward when shifting going into a corner or recovering. For me, anyway. Perhaps I am a typical and just need to utilize it more to be comfortable in that situation.
@ECPP
@ECPP 4 года назад
Hi Thomas, it seems many brands do that like BMW, Porsche, Jag, etc. Mclaren is on a rocker level but is also stationary, and my Lambo stays still which feels more right as well. I agree with you and it feels awkard on the street especially when making a long left hand turn in traffic, it leaves you searching for the paddle. With that said, I had checked into this and was told that when a person is typically racing, the 10 and 2 position is held and driving on a racetrack means that a person rarely ever turns that sharp to have to roll over the vertical position and therefore its always on the fingertips. Either way, it seems to take some getting used to especially on the street.

So you don’t have to be in a low gear when going slow and a high gear when going fast?
@royalstingray822
@royalstingray822 4 месяца назад
Think of it like riding a bike. It's very difficult tog et going from a standing start if you're in the highest gear, but it's also very difficult to go as fast as you can unless you're in the highest gear. So you switch the gears as you accelerate, steadily trading the torque of low gears for the speed of high gears The lower gears cover a lower range of speeds and the higher gears cover a higher range of speeds, but to go from low speed to high speed you need to accelerate, and because the car will generate much more torque in a low gear, it will accelerate much faster. The RPM of the engine is like your legs spinning the pedals. It's less efficient, but the faster you can spin your legs the more raw power is input into the system. High rpm in a low gear leads to quick acceleration. Then once you've got enough speed you change up a gear, and notice how it doesn't feel sluggish to continue accelerating? That's because the 1st gear has done the hard work getting over the inertia to accelerate up to 2nd gear speeds, then 2nd can continue on to 3rd, like a relay race. To do 60mph in 1st gear you'd have to have an engine that could do some 20,000rpm, but similarly to do 10mph in 6th you'd need an incredibly powerful engine. 1st gear will be enough to run at 20mph without an issue, but the revs will be high - like 4,000+. Changing up to 2nd will drop the revs but that's ok because the car is already moving at 20, so it doesn't need the raw horsepower to keep accelerating, and instead it's better to trade some torque for a faster gear.

@raymast4703
@raymast4703 4 года назад
@@hatchell18 It depends on where in the rev range your car's powerband lies. The power band is where the car is making peak torque and max horsepower for the range so for example, say your car is turbo charged and your car's torque band is from 1700 rpm to 5500 rpm. That is to say, this car makes peak torque from 1700 rpm to 5500 rpm after which torque starts to drop off. Then you have to see where the car is making good horsepower. Googling a dyno chart for your particular car will show you the curves for both HP and torque, then according to that you can figure out where your powerband is. For example, my car makes peak torque at 1400 rpm and starts to really drop off at around 6000 rpm. The car also makes good horsepower all the way through the rev range, but really comes on at around 3000 rpm and plateaus at about 6000rpm after torque drops off. So I can safely say, my powerband is somewhere around 3000 rpm to 6000 rpm. So, if you want to downshift for more power, you downshift into whatever gear puts you in your powerband. Most of the time, if I'm cruising in 5th gear at say 2000 rpm and I want solid power, I might downshift into 3rd gear putting me up at around 3700 rpm, which is in my powerband, but I have a 6mt. Cars with turbos in them will make torque alot earlier than naturally aspirated cars so the power band of a v8 mustang will probably be later and longer in the rev range. For example, I had a v8 e90 m3 and its powerband was from 3800 rpm to 8000 rpm! In contrast to my OG m2 which is about 3000 rpm to 6000 rpm. Quite a difference, but then very different engine characteristics. Before doing any of this however, you should familiarize yourself with your particular transmission so you dont cause harm to your vehicle. Remember! The point of downshifting is to put you into the powerband for more power and speed. Other reasons like engine braking should only be used for emergencies. Put stress on the brakes, not the transmission. Good luck bro!
