Yes, this paint will work on ceramic tile. Follow the same steps and sand the tile beforehand to make sure the paint will stick since tile is usually glazed.
Really well! It looks almost exactly like it did on day one. This bathtub takes a beating, I can't believe how well it's held up. I'm working on the updated video. It is taking me longer than expected to get it done, but I'll have it posted soon.
I used marine boat paint to paint the tiles in my tub/ shower (left the bath tub did not paint it). It looked great when it was done. After about one year it still looked pretty good. After about 2 years it started to show defects- small scratches and some minor peeling (mostly were the bar of soap was constantly hitting the wall). However now after 3 years it has started to really yellow. It still looks "white" (not horrible yellow like you would see in a smoker's home or bad yellowing you see in bright sunlight). It would still look kind of white if it was by itself however because it is directly next to the original high gloss bath tub, toilet, cabinets, shower bar etc that are all manufacture painted (I believe power coated or porcelain) gloss white the yellowing of the marine paint becomes very noticeable. There is a big difference between the painted tiles and gloss white tub. Directly after painting the tiles the paint will look just like this video. Gloss white tiles blending nicely with the gloss bath tub. However be prepared to repaint every few years because it will definitely yellow over time. I am just happy I only painted my tiles that can be easier replace or covered with a liner if I dont' want to keep repainting vs painting my entire bathtub that would cost thousands of dollars to replace. Overall experience it looks great directly after painting. However it will yellow so be prepared to repaint every few years (in my experience three years).
Thanks for your experience! Not I'm thinking to add some tint so yellow won't be a problem. Green or whatever tub is better than scratched one anyways. You saved me a lot of time in three years period
I did it several years ago and it peels off and looks uglier than when you started. Do not do this. P.S. I remodeled older homes in Minneapolis MN for 20 years, I'm now retired. I thought I'd save people money and a mess by sharing this information.
I’ve never seen a better DIY video done by a woman (or man!)!! You seriously need to be discovered and have your own DIY tv series! The idea to sand between coats is a great one. I’m about to refinish showers and bathtubs in a mobile home. Thanks for all your great tips.
@@TheNiftyNester Hi nice video have you had to touch up on this tub does it look patchy after showering and can you scrub shower when needs cleaning and not worry

Thank you, this is exactly what I’m looking for! My house is super ghetto and I’m just trying to make it look a little bit less ghetto because I’m hosting a huge Christmas family reunion. 😅
@@dovespaligrino8312 it's never cheaper to buy a new tub. I can't afford a new tub but I can afford to refinish the one I have and there's a lot of people in the same situation. Even if I have to refinish it again after a few years it'll still cost me less than a new tub. But if you can afford a new tub that's great!
@@TheNiftyNesterI’m buying a new house, I’m soooo excited to be getting it. It’s a huge 1800’s house, but it’s so ugly, ugly paint, the ugliest pink toilet, pink sink, yellow and red wallpaper, I can go on. That’s not the worst of it, the sewer line is broken and the roof has some damage that HAS to be fixed, and the electrical is out of date so the whole house has to be reworked. 90k for the house but another 40k for the repairs alone, that doesn’t cover all the ugly stuff, hideous bathroom, horribly ugly kitchen, I need all new appliances etc. but of course now I’m broke and just can’t afford it. Being able to paint my tub, paint over old ugly “but in good shape” tiles etc is super cheap but still makes a huge difference until I can afford to replace the appliances. Btw we’re a family of 8 on one income, thanks for realizing not everyone in every situation can afford to just up and buy a new tub etc.
I just happened upon your video, and was SO blown away by your resourcefulness (vent fan and hose setup; research performed to choose the Rustoleum Marine Coatings Topside Paint instead of the Tub & Tile refinishing kit), thoroughness, and, simply, excellent video. You are quite the DiYer! Thanks for the inspiration.
When i use this topside paint i use a 3/8 nap roller. It holds more paint and as you said it self levels. I noticed when using the foam roller i got more air bubbles in the paint giving me a more bubbly finish (this was actually on my boat) but i liked the durability of the product and was considering doing my soaker tub with it next. Thanks for sharing
What a great job. Topside is made for painting fiberglass boats so it makes perfect sense to use on a fiberglass tub enclosure. If you have a true tile surround and cast iron tub I'd be inclined to say use the tub n tile refinishing kit.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just refinished my bathtub and the old bubbling sheet of tiles above it. I've been in this apartment 2 years and my landlord said she'd have the maintenance team do it when I moved in. She even already had the kit. She never did. I then asked her to recaulk last summer, as it as starting to mold and be difficult to clean. She kept saying the guy would be in touch and he never was. She's a very hands off landlord, doesn't care what I do, and my rent is ridiculously cheap in the midst of this housing crisis. So I started painting different areas of my little apartment that need a coat of paint. It's looking so much better! I finished the tub and shower surround in one day, two coats with two packages of Rust-Oleum tub and tile. Phew, it IS strong, even with an n95. Next time I'm buying a respirator. I had to take breaks, as I was feeling dizzy. Except for a few imperfections, it looks brand new, fresh and clean. I scrubbed and scrubbed but couldn't get the old grey stains out. It was looking so nasty, I didn't even want to take a shower. I stripped the caulking and will be doing that as well. Thank you for showing me that I can do it! I am so excited to add some plants and candles and take a bubble bath!
I finished my bathtub project and I like how it turned out. Thank you for the video it was a great tutorial. I asked about fixing runs and ended up lightly sanding any flaws and doing a total 3rd coat and I"m glad I did. After it dried for 3 days I took 0000 steel wool and went over the paint job which smoothed out small ridges from the paint roller and it looks great.
This is incredible! I literally just discovered your channel, and am binge watching all your stuff! I'm older ( late 50s), but love to tackle DIY projects! You make them look easy, and do an amazing job! Thank you for sharing your creativity and talent! I can't wait to paint my bathtub! 😊😊
I'm sorry I'm just now responding, thank you so much for your kind comment! I love hearing from other women DIYers, there's nothing we can't tackle and it doesn't matter how old or young we are. Keep at it!
Good grief after the fan motor, the plastic zipper, the face breathing mask, the scrubbing and cleaning etc. You should have just bought and installed a new surround from a supply depot store! Same price tag!
Excellent video, awesome work and results!!! Thank you for a well done video, informative, with no rambling or babbling about stupid stuff, to the point and a job actually well done without cutting corners! I so wish many other youtubers would take a lesson from you!
If you have a window, then you can put a fan in that window, and that would be enough to exhaust the fumes. If you don't have a window, then you probably want to use a stronger exhaust fan than the one in your bathroom. Bathroom exhaust fans aren't usually very strong, so it just depends on how long it takes yours to circulate the air in your bathroom. You'll also want to keep the bathroom door closed or seal off the doorway so you don't fill the rest of your house with fumes. I hope that helps.
I’m renovating a 66 year old house. The bathroom is okay but the bath tile is puke green. I’ve avoided replacing them for a year now. I’m so happy I found this. I actually have a can of that paint from a previous project. Next month I’ll give this a shot! Thanks for the lesson! Also that zipper is going to be a game changer!
Thank you! It's always nice to have product on hand already for a project. I hope your tiles turn out well! You'll love the zipper, it's definitely one of those things you don't realize you need in your life until you have it lol.
i've never puked green. its always clear with whatever i ate within the last 12 hours. if you have green than that's bile from the liver or gallbladder. and you likely should see a doctor.
As a 62 year old I have the necessary wisdom to proclaim that was Avocado Green😂 It was fancy stuff back then along with Harvest Gold. Tubs, toilets and sinks as well as stoves and refrigerators in those colors were all the rage.
This changes everything! The other channels need to talk about their personal lives and I see some editing but this seems really real. Thanks! I'm definitely going back to watch your other videos
Coming from a boat builder and avid DIYer. Nice work! I liked what you chose to do prep. wise. One thought to consider... Using a 2 part QUALITY marine epoxy based paint (like awl grip) would yeild a harder and longer lasting finish... it would also be more dangerous to apply (and more expensive) and vent, so it does have downsides... and perhaps with that small enclosed bathroom might prove too dangerous to do... but worth considering for those projects you want to do one time and be done with it for 20 years.
You are amazingly thorough and clearly very talented at DIY projects! Thank you for sharing in such detail every step of this process. The tub/shower surround looks fabulous!
I cannot understand why you only have 25.2k Subscribers! Your information sharing is the best I have found and I watch a LOT of home improvement videos. (And zero television.) Your list of items utilized in your videos and the timeline are very helpful. With over 2 million views it seems something is amiss. I do wish we could all manage to work at the speed in your videos, everyone would complete all their projects in less than a month. (That would be particularly helpful for me re repairing where I fell through my kitchen floor - twice. Not in the same place so there's 2 holes now. Water damage can be sneaky.)
So much prep involved! I’ve been wanting to paint my bathtub but now I’m going to slow down a bit and make sure I first purchase all the supplies you recommend and wait for a time the kids are with their dad so they don’t need to bathe at home for 5 days.
I used the marine paint and it peeled after 3 or 4 months. It was awful. The tenant had a baby and we had to sand off all remaining paint with the bathroom door closed to contain fumes. It was hot and horribly stuffy , the best mask to use is the painter’s mask, we didn’t inhale any fumes.
Thank you so much for this video. You gave me the confidence to finally do a bathroom remodel and I am so glad that I found this alternative to buying or building a new shower. I only have 1 coat finished and it looks brand new. You’re awesome! You make things simple and easy to follow!
Did this in a rental rental house. I used my drill with an attached scrubber for cleaning and a rotary sander. I cleaned it at least 10X. (Probably some undiagnosed OCD, 😅) Prep is EVERYTHING! Don't use abrasive cleaners or scrubbers after painting. 2 Tenants later and it still looks good.
Thank you for making this video I currently moved in to an old apartment and the current renters painted the tub but it’s peeling off and my landlords don’t plan to clean it up. I hate taking showers it looks so gross. I can’t wait to start this project so I can enjoy my showers and baths again. 🤗
Thank you for your great video. It gave me the confidence to do my green 40yr old Kohler fiberglass shower tub. It was in perfect shape but wrong color. My wife loves the new glossy white look of the Rustoleum top coat now. There are a few things I learned. Sand with 220 at start and between all coats. We could see some scratching in finished product from the 150 grit I used initially. It took 4 coats to completely hide the green and the sanding marks. The $30 quart can ran out after the 3rd coat. Don't use the cheap $1 foam roller kit from the dollar store. The tray worked great but the foam expanded and kept falling off the roller. I then purchased a high quality foam roller and it worked great for the following 3 coats. I was able to reuse the same roller by keeping it in a baggie over night. Use a foam brush to do the detail work. The horse hair brush I used didn't work well at all. I was hoping for a better looking result when all finished. The self leveling properties of the paint didn't smooth out the over lapping from the roller. Not real noticeable unless the light reflects off the surface at an angle which happens with a window or light fixture. It took me 2hrs to remove the old glass sliding shower door. Took lots of elbow grease and goof off to remove adhesive and silicone caulking. It took another 8 hrs to finish sanding and painting. It is still quite smelly in the bathroom after a week. Smells like vinegar. If I had to do it over I would use appliance white spray paint (not the epoxy) for the areas above the water line in the tub. I used this on a fridge and it looked very professional. This would have been a lot cheaper, faster, less smelly and better looking. Not sure how it would hold up to every day shower use but it would be easy to respray if needed. If anybody does this let me know how it turned out. Hope this helps someone.
@@kyliewilson5800 nope. I'm tempted too. I would just do the side wall since it is most noticable there. However, we rarely use that shower and the smell took a month to resolve. I can still detect the smell 6 months later. The finish is holding up well. There have been about a dozen showers taken so far. I will wait until summer before redoing.
This looks great!! I wanted to ask how it's holding up. I used the Rustoleum Tub and Tile paint previously and it peeled terribly. I'm a furniture artist so I'm no stranger to cleaning and prepping before painting. I'd love to know if this material holds up better than the tub and tile. Thanks for your time!
@@annaossadchaya7752 The DIY Power Couple also used this product and they did a follow up video on how it holds up. I'd like ot hear from this lady too, though.
She responded to one comment that it's just fine. They asked about scratching and peeling and she responded that she would need a sander to scratch it, it hardened.
You're welcome and thank you! I'm glad this was helpful. It's a lot of work doing your own renovations but it's so rewarding and you will save so much money!
You did a really good job! My bathroom is just like yours beige and I would like to paint. I gonna watch your video again and start to work! Thank you for sharing.
Very nice! But why oh why would you not remove the shower faucet trim?!?! It takes lees time to remove a couple of screws then to cover it with tape… not to mention the next trim may be smaller or a different shape. 🤷♂️
Thanks to this video I just completed my bathtub, only thing I did differently was added a primer first, other than that my tub came out Bright glossy white just like I wanted it. Thank You again for this Video, it was by far the BEST Video
You're welcome and thank you! I'm glad to hear yours turned out so well, I love hearing from everyone that's painted theirs. Was the primer easy to use? I'm painting another tub soon that has tile walls and I'm thinking about trying out the primer and using a non- slip additive on the bottom of the tub. Thanks again!
Yes it was very easy and to be honest due to me using the primer I only needed one coat of paint but I did two coats and sand with the 220 grid like you said and it came out SOOOOO Shiny and pretty. Thanks to you and your video. I literally looked at about 10 videos and NONE TOPPED YOURS. Thanks again
Great! Mine sure needs this make over - I see it can be purchased in colors I could have a red tub and black walls :D Now I just have to go without taking a shower for a week....
I had my tub professionally refinished, its a cast iron tub. Its lasted me 20+ years! He told me not to use anything with bleach in it to clean it, so i never used any products with bleach to clean it.
Awesome job! I keep coming back and rewatching this. I'm just debating whether I should paint mine as part of a mini-reno. It's ok but a bit dingy. I'm hesitant because of concern that the paint won't age well and will end up looking worse than it looks now. Yours looks so amazing. How did it hold up I see this video is from a while ago. Does your painted tub still look great. And what do you use to clean it now that it's painted. Thank you so much for your videos!
I just completed this on my walk in shower base. It turned out amazing! So thankful for this video, but I too am wondering what she used to clean it w/o damaging or scuffing up the paint.
Thank you both so much! As far as how it's looking now, it's been a little over a year and it's held up really well. The finish is like a hard enamel surface once the paint cures which makes it really durable. As far as cleaning it goes, I just avoid using abrasive cleaners like comet and scrub brushes. I can usually get it clean with vinegar water and a sponge but sometimes, if it's a little dirtier, I'll use a spray tub cleaner and sponge. I hope that helps!
This video is amazing! We just bought a house with a guest bath that is so similar, but our tub surround is even uglier. (Yellow, but maybe supposed to have been beige?) I’m curious how you handled the caulking around the surround. Did you remove it beforehand, and caulk before painting? Or did you go back and caulk after painting? TIA. Hoping to start prep for this next weekend. We repainted the bathroom Swiss Coffee and now it’s made the surround color extra offensive!
Thank you for the amount of details you added to this vlog. I ordered the paint and I'm going to follow your steps - to the T. You inspire me. Thank you, again!
Could you tell me how the Rust-Oleum marine paint has held up? I'm in the process of doing my tub, and I thought of using an enamel paint. Then I saw your video. Thank you Karen
Timmy Grosso, I've been looking for an automotive clear coat that i can seal this product with on a tub; any recommendations or thoughts? My hope is that the clear top-coat will prevent peeling and ambering. I know a couple that says their tub started ambering after 2 years. Definitely would etch the surface and use primer befor painting...
You're welcome and thank you! I am beyond pleased with how well this paint has held up. Once the paint cures it has such a hard finish that it doesn't look or feel like paint, it's more like a hard shell.
I’m thinking of doing this. I use suction cup hooks on my shower walls to hang most things because 1. There’s never enough shelf space in these tub surrounds and 2. Things sitting always getting gross underneath. So, my question is… Would I still be able to use suction cups on the walls if I used this paint? How has it held up under your feet or where you set things down? TIA! ❤️
I haven't used anything with suction cups in the tub so I'm sorry I can't say for sure but I can't think of a reason why they wouldn't still stick to the surface. It's a hard shell finish once it's cured. As far as wear and tear there really isn't any. I'll do an update in the near future, I just have a couple videos left to edit and post from the rest of this bathroom renovation before I post the update (editing takes me forever). The only wear I can see on the tub is a couple of tiny scratches that I made when moving a metal ladder in and out of the tub area when I was refinishing the ceiling in that bathroom. They're small scratches on the outside side of the tub that I will touch up when I film the update video but there's not really any wear yet on the inside of the tub. I don't know how long it'll stay looking new but so far it's held up really well.
Thank you!!! It's held up really well. I haven't had any issues with chipping, peeling, or anything like that. This bathtub gets a lot of use daily, and it still looks amazing. I wanted to have the update video posted months ago but had some things come up and haven't been able to get it done. I am hoping to finish that video soon, though.
What a really nice job very impressive, thank you for this video. I am definitely going to roll with your advice.Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
This is absolutely fantastic content - Wow! I was going to buy a new corner sink but I've decided to paint it and save some money. I'll just get new taps as the Sales are on. Again, wonderful content, so well presented! Thank you Nifty Nester. Blessings always.Psyche aka Psyche Thompson UK 🌹
I’m impressed too. Excellent job. I’ve been watching numerous channels and yours is the best. Thank you so much. I’m going to get the marine paint and not the rustolium
Watching this video made me super tired. It looks like SO much work, but you made it look SO easy! The outcome was gorgeous and really helped motivate me to press on with my plans to do my sink, stand up shower, jetted tub and upstairs tub/shower combo. 😵💫 I'm tired again. Lol. Wanna come help?! Lol. Great work! I look forward to more of your videos!
Ok. I just painted my jacuzzi tub. I was nervous to do it. But paint is really good. And if it’s as durable as it supposed to be I would be totally happy. Because it looks really good now. P. S. I had some kind of dots all over my tub. I can’t get rid of it with anything. I didn’t want to switch jacuzzi because I use tubs once in a blue moon. But those dots bugged me a lot. And if I would change jacuzzi I wouldn’t put a jacuzzi… I would want a stand alone bath tub. And if I would do that I would need to renovate whole master bathroom. And it would cost me a fortune. So I spent only 17$ on a can of paint. Thank you so much for posting this video. I really hope it’ll hold up well.
Update. I have been taking my baths for a month already and it works just great! Nothing happened to my beautiful like new jacuzzi. I love it. Thank you so much!
@Tanya Misyuna I'm so glad to hear it worked out well! I'm sorry for the late response, I'm going through my comments and realized I had a bunch I hadn't responded to yet. Are you still happy with your jacuzzi tub? I'm working on my update video right now for my bathtub, but I love to hear how it's going for others that have tried this.
I did it! It came out great. Only deviation from ur video is that I have a sliding glass door in the bedroom that the bath is in so I didn't have any trouble with fumes. Took me four days but I'm old. I wud luv to show u the after but don't know how send.
how is the paint holding up? also do you think i would be fine with the fumes if I just use that respirator and the ceiling vent fan I already have in my bathroom ?
So, I did exactly as you had explained to paint the bathtub…which is AWESOME!!! But then we decided that we needed to change the drain and the other fixtures that we realized were rusted through… But unfortunately, some spots were left having to be touched up with more paint in those areas since having to take those fixtures out and before it could all completely cure… Do you think doing touchups will affect the overall paint, if we’re not repainting the whole bathtub, but just certain parts? I get so nervous when I see some people commenting that they did this refinishing job on their bathtub with this exact paint and then it peeled several months later… I can only imagine they did not follow all of your directions. So, if as long as I scuff sanded the areas that I needed to touch up before I painted, do you think it will affect the bathtub in the future and cause it to peel in those areas? Thank you for your thorough video!!
I'm curious as to how well this paint held up since you did the paintjob. Is it still in a good condition or has some of it started to peel of yet? Great comprehensive video btw :)
Thank you! It has held up amazingly well. It's been 2 years now, and there isn't any peeling, chipping, or anything else like that. It looks pretty much the exact same as it did when I painted it.
Right?! After finding these zippers, I can't live without them. It has made renovations so much easier now that I don't have to re-tape the plastic every time I want to come in and out of a room I'm working on.
@@TheNiftyNester yes, I do interior design work, paint wall murals, paint houses inside and out. That zipper is a game changer!!! Even outside in my garden! I could put it in shade cloth and cover the plants in the heat of the day.
I would really like to see how the bathtub and surround is doing now, 2 years later. I have thought about using Topside along with many other paints. Also thought maybe using a primer would be good. Ty
Great video !! I have a white tub that I need to repaint to Ocean Blue . 😆 When using the repainted tub later did you notice you the surface too slippery ? I'm trying to decide if I need to use a type of non slip coating on the floor of the tub. Excellent job on the fan duct box !!!👍 Looks like a super job . Really appreciate the attention to the different details.
Hi, I found your video after several months of researching methods/paint kits to change the color of a 70s blue bathtub to a gloss white. Your method exceeds, by far, all other methods I've read about/watched videos for- in both cost as well as work involved, time and ease of application. However I am wondering how your method/paint choice has held up in the year since? At the end of this video you said you planned to do a follow-up, but having looked through your list of videos, I don't see anything related to this. So I was wondering if you would tell me how it held up? Has the tub been used extensively, as a main bathroom would be used? Have you experienced any bleed through of stains or original color or any flaking/chipping away of the new paint? And, if any of these things occurred, were you able to repair it to a satisfactory condition? I would truly appreciate any answers you can give to these questions, as soon as you possibly can, because I'm fighting an itchy trigger finger from clicking the order button for the materials at this very moment! (I'd like to complete this job asap, before the weather gets too cold to keep a window open.) I've also noticed several other vids of yours that pertain to future projects I have planned, so I'm excited to have come across your channel. I love DIY- just today I removed an old water heater and installed a new one, including replacing sections of copper pipe. I am 55 years old, so these days I appreciate anything that makes a job easier and faster! Thank you in advance for all the work you've put into your channel and for any questions that you can answer for me now. I appreciate your help with this very much!
Thank you so much, I love your comment! It's the most rewarding feeling to finish our own home reno projects. I've never changed out a hot water heater, but I imagine that took some work! I am working on filming an update right now (I have a couple of videos to finish editing, then I'll have this update video edited and posted). Sorry it's a little late, I wanted to have it up after a year. This is the hallway bathroom that our 5 kids share, so it gets a ton of use. Even with the daily heavy use, I haven't had any issues with paint chipping, peeling, or anything like that. There's no bleed through of the old color. The paint is an oil based paint (I wouldn't use anything other than oil based on a bathtub), so I was worried the color would change, but it hasn't been noticeable. I feel like the white is more of a neutral white now than it was when I first painted it. It was a very bright white at first, but it still just looks like a white tub. Since your tub is a bolder color you might do a coat of the primer before you paint. I've gotten feedback from a few people that the primer helped to cover the bright colors really well, and then the paint took fewer coats. I believe it's called Rustoleum Marine Primer. I love this bathroom and how the tub turned out, I plan on using this paint in a rental property I'm getting ready to reno for a friend, and it has a blue tub with blue tiles. I hope I answered all of your questions, but if I missed something or you think of something else, feel free to comment again! Good luck with your bathtub!
