How to paint a Lighthouse in Line and Wash Watercolor Lesson. Peter Sheeler

As I often do, I just start drawing with no real idea of what my finished painting will be. This does get me in trouble sometimes. As I progressed with this one I could see a Lighthouse on the edge of the rocks.
** Now selling my paintings on Ebay **

PEN: The Uni-ball deluxe micron roller ball pen .5mm nib. These pens are extremely waterproof on my papers and can be painted over immediately. The roller ball is almost indestructible and claims to be archival.
BRUSH: An inexpensive, Curry's brand, #10 brush. I often use the largest brush that can do the job.
PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 140lb Hot Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep. *I plan to replace the Fuchsia with Winsor Newton Quinacridone Magenta when mine runs out.*
MIXING PALETTE:
The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
REFERENCE IDEAS: come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location. If I use a reference photo it will be included in the video.
This one was done from imagination/memory without a reference photo.

I admire your ability to draw outline with a pen without having to draw first with pencil. Your simple palette captures the scene so well. I really enjoy watching your line drawing come alive. Thank you ✨🎨

These rocks are just amazing... Just when you think they're perfect.... they get more perfect. Your blue on them hit the mark. The warm evening sun on the house....soft...the shadows... I could watch these all day. Thank you always for your hard work...and sharing.

Hello Peter, I have a question for you. Do you use Winsor & Newton Cotman's or Artist watercolour? Just curious as your paint are very transparent. My guess would be the Artist! Thank you. Totally lovely. I looove those landscape.
@PeterSheelerart
@PeterSheelerart 5 лет назад
Hi Christine. I use Artist's quality. Cotman are decent paints, but don't stay as true when mixing.

Beautiful! In many of your videos you use a flat brush. What made you decide to use a round brush this time? Do you like using the flat or round better? Thanks!
@PeterSheelerart
@PeterSheelerart 5 лет назад
Hi Lynette. I prefer a flat, but often get asked if I use round. So, I used a round :)

A question from an ignoramus. Should there be shadows of the lighthouse and the house on the sea or are they meant to be too far back on the hill for a reflection?
