I'm only a couple of videos into your library, but I just wanted to thank you for creating tutorials that actually teach. I feel I've learnt more from watching two of your videos than I've learnt from countless others. Beautiful painting!

Your presentation on your work material for each painting is outstanding. I have made my own light system to copy your detailed pages. I also used insulation board to tape my wet pages to dry. This method work pretty good for now just starting to paint. Finished my first painting-Dark Piink Rose Watercolor. It was a challenge for my 1st time painting. Your TIPS help too. So happy to found you. I will definitely give your name for credit on these beautiful paintings. Looking forward to the next. K from St.Louis, MO USA

Beautiful...I would have never thought you could drop in some blue to make the petals darker. Thank you for teach us how to layer the colors from very pale washes to darker colors for shading. It really separates each petal !

Thank you so much Louise for sharing another one of your beautiful paintings with us. I am a hobby artist and love using opera rose and also bright violet by Holbein. Both are fugitive colours but I love them and nothing else compares. I agree that it is wrong when artists sell originals using these colours but there are others like you who are ethical and do not. However I really could not mix the colours I do without these 2 shades. I know that poor Anna Mason was criticized so much about using these 2 colours she stopped. I too wish companies would make these colours to be lightfast but so far they have not seemed to be able to. Hopefully this will change in the future😀💕

Just mesmerized watching you paint. Love your method and the results. I may have missed it at some point in your videos, but I was wondering if you paint flat or at an angle? Most of the time I mean. We all move our work around a wee bit....

Hi Sarah. Thank you very much. I like the heavier paper becaue I don't have to stretch it if I'm not working too wet. It's quite smooth in comparison to the cold pressed. 💕

I love your work, and I am so glad you share your tutorials with us. However, I would love for artists who choose to use the highly fugitive Opera Rose to explain why they are making this choice. I don't mean to be challenging, just trying to clear up my confusion. Although I love Opera, I gave up using it because I didn't think it would be fair to anyone purchasing my work, but I still see professional artists using Opera liberally, knowing that their work will surely turn brownish with time, just like it did with Alizarin Crimson, which nearly every artist has given up using. So why not give up Opera. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this if possible. Is it okay to use it?
@LouiseDeMasi
@LouiseDeMasi 5 лет назад
Thank you! I love it too. If you know of a colour that's similar but isn't fugitive let me know. I don't use Opera Rose on any painting I would sell the original of because I am unsure of how much it would fade. This particular painting sits in a box at home. I sell prints of the painting. Any watercolour paintings I hang myself at home I hang on the wall away from direct sunlight to prevent them from fading. I'm thinking I should get this one framed, hang it on a wall away from direct light and see if it fades over time. Then I'll know from experience how to advise people. 😊
@Eirenmist
@Eirenmist 5 лет назад
I appreciate your thoughtful reply. I respect that you only sell prints from paintings using fugitive pigments. I know a few professional artists who use it and never make prints of their work but sell only originals. What an excellent idea to hang a painting using Opera in your own home to monitor the changes. I would love to know the outcome of such an experiment over time.
@Roslyngal
@Roslyngal 5 лет назад
I agree absolutely, Eirenmist. And Louise, if I had your talent, I’d never risk it on a beautiful piece like this. I know roses fade and go brown in real life, but what a shame when the painting does too! I can’t help feeling that using known fugitive pigments encourages others (who do sell originals) to keep using it. I appreciate you do the right thing with selling only prints, but teaching elevates you beyond selling, to being a role-model for others. If everyone stops buying Opera Rose, I guess manufacturers will be more motivated to find lightfast alternatives? I can’t wait until they do!
