I have never even tried a technique like this before for a tank. I have a command Rhino HQ to do soon, might test this out. Can't know the result until you try it for yourself
Just done one side of a rhino in reds/orange for my Khorne Beserkers in Warhammer 40k, looks sick and I used your brushes ;-) First time using them and couldn't be happier with how it looks already!
Just wanted to say. I mainly paint spaceships, so I really appreciate videos where you aren't painting Figures. I'm loving my Artis Opus Drybrushes. It's taking some changing of habits with how I used to drybrush, but the results are really worth it. Thank You!
Just used this technique on my death guard rhino, 2 hours work and it looks amazing! Traditional blending and highlighting was filling me full of dread! Absolutely love these videos. Keep up the good work!
Artis Opus Here is a link to the picture on twitter: twitter.com/pryd1e/status/1309063248273182722?s=21 I also used your ultramarine guide (sadly no airbrush) for these guys: twitter.com/pryd1e/status/1307698893015207938?s=21 They even got a mention on the Warhammer hobby roundup show. Thanks again for the awesome work you do! Cheers!
I've recently come back to the hobby after a 25+ year hiatus, and this video is going to really help me on the Razorback that came in the post today. Thank you.
Yes dude! Perfect, hope it goes well! Check out our other videos for tips on infantry, etc, I'd really recommend terrain as a way to ease in, it's great practise, and forgiving, plus relevant for any army :)
I used this technique for some black legion rhinos. Couldn't quite go so bright, unfortunately. I did a gradient from vallejo black, to vallejo black-gray, to vallejo med. gunship-gray. Then some skavenblight dinge speckling around the tracks. Finally a liberal use of the darkest streaking grime color, with some targeted cleanup, brought it all together. With the extreme lack of color on this, it creates a nice blank canvas to really dirty it up with mud splatter and chaos decals.
I recently started using dry brushing for paint model and this channel is providing a lot of very helpful information. Thanks for sharing this information.
Looks fantastic. Really eye-catching. Love your video with the terrain too. Marvellous stuff. Looks like I need to splash out on some of your lovely brushes!
Thanks for this, was struggling with my first rhino dealing with streaks and whatnot on all the flat panels. This helped me knock it out in a few hours
The results are very good! I'd love to see you paint something organic, like, let's say, the wing membrane of a LotR fell beast! I don't have an airbrush and I'm not really a fan of traditional blending methods (glaze, layer, wet-blend etc) on such large areas, so getting a set of these brushes would be ideal I think.
Thank you very much for your video. I was thinking of using airbrush but I am very fond of the final drybush rendering in general. I didn't know it could be applied to vehicles !!!
I've always found the traditional way of drybrushing ends up with my miniatures looking chalky or powdery but, this is absolutely amazing. As soon as my wallet recovers from the current situation I'll be ordering as set and giving this a go!
It’s a great effect for a ‘single’ colour like most Space Marine chapters but how would you manage building the shade and highlights when you have multiple colours e.g. a camouflage pattern? I’m hoping to apply this in a subtle way to a Raptors vehicle but I’m interesting in adding some sort of digital camo if possible.
Cheers dude, if it was going to be something weathered I'd probably go from a brown/blue base and up through typical GW Space Wolf colours. You could go from Doombull brown + Huldra Blue/Deep Blue (S75), and then repeat that Doombull in rust/weathering elsewhere. Maybe I should give it a go in the future!
I think this style for painting a vehicle is amazingly stunning! Now I have a concern for an impending Spartan Assault Tank I will be painting 30k grim dark style for Space Wolves. I want it to have camo tiger stripes, two colors in a 7-6 stripe pattern. When does one work in the stripes? After base coating? After working up the highlights? Thanks! ❤
Hey Byron, have you tried your technique on traditionally super smooth vehicles (Like the Eldar for example)? I think the effect Is pretty spectacular, especially when you can't afford an airbrush setup. Top notch work mate.
Hi Nathan, the closest is a Necron Doom-Scythe, I'd love to do some Eldar too, as long as they aren't over detailed it'd be super fast, effective, and could look amazing! Check out the Star Wars Legion video on our channel, that's kind of close :).
A bit late to the party, but its good to see that this kind of thing is possible; I've fallen heavily out of love with using an airbrush as I get about 30 seconds of usage before it clogs regardless of how I mix thinners, flow improvers etc; followed by hours of soaking parts in IPA and days/weeks of feeling too despondent to do anything model related afterwards. Given how expensive airbrush parts like the needle i've bent and the nozzle which seems to be permanently gummed up with primer the set of these drybrushes look like a bargain and would open the door to actually getting things done.
Hey dude, sorry to hear it, we've actually got a series out now on airbrushing, let us know over there if you have any questions, happy to help! This stuff is magic though, if you enjoyed this one please check out some of our Star Wars Legion content, I feel that's where we found our feet a bit more, and really pushed the potential for the technique, with some pretty realistic end results!
Great video, can't wait for my set to arrive now! Could you do a video on how to use Series D for infantry size models, maybe a character like a Primaris Captain or even a Necron Overlord? I'd love to see something like that!
Hi there, thanks for the question! Check our reply to Dave above, we’ve had a lot of requests for Death Guard, so we may have to approach a tank sometime soon 😊.
Hey i notice towards the end of the video you mention adding a darker wash to give a contrast I have never added my washes after the highlights and wondered if you have any examples or tips for doing so?
Homemade wash formula: 4x distilled water per 1x of the color....works for me anyway. 🤷🏻 This has opened doors to a much wider spectrum of wash colors.
Great Video, only wish I found it sooner. What colours would you suggest for Ultramarines? and do you think the same technique could work on a Repulsor/Impulsor?
Hey! I need some advice, I really want to try this technique on a Sisters of Battle Rhino - the usual black, Order of Martyred Lady scheme. Can you advise what colours of blacks/greys you think would work to achieve this same technique but keeping the tank ‘black’? I’m stumped!
I'd lean toward the 'cool' greys, like dark reaper, and use them sparingly, your mini should still be mainly black, it's important not to paint a grey rhino :)
Great tutorial. I have the full set and must get stuck in. What colours would you recommend for a " Grotty" Death Guard Rhino? I've a couple to do. Thanks in advance.
This is something we really need to test out, we are getting a lot of requests for DG! The majority of our Series D videos work from a cool base to a warmer finishing colour (why we use blue/purple bases so much), which poses an interesting question about how we start things off! I think Xerus purple, transitioning swiftly into bone, with a little doombull for the ‘dirty’ warm colour, ending with pure bone. The Green is much easier, deep purple/blue beginning, and then up as bright as seems fit (we often use Boreal Tree Green).
Hey mate, sorry for the delay. Hope you enjoyed our Necron tutorial, another one is coming very soon! You can check our last community post for updates 😊
Artis Opus no need to apologise mate, it’s awesome you go through every comment, the time you take is massively appreciated! Really looking forward to see how your channel develops!
100%! Check out our cloaking vehicle tutorial for Eldar ships, they are perfect! It is also a less old tutorial, so it is better for achieving a high quality finish :)
Hey dude, exactly the same method just switch up the colours to match your army. Check out our Necron flier video for colours that are closer to Blood Angels 😊 Thank you for watching!
This looks a lot like how I started painting my dark eldar boats. I never fiished them though, so picking up this could help. Inudvidualy highlight the dark eldar armour plates in the hull is very similar to what you did on the rhino door. Can this teqnique work for as small models as dark eldar cabalites as well?
It absolutely can, you need smaller brushes, slightly diluted (but not too much, only a little) paint, and just have to be careful not to go in too thick :)
Brush soap comes in our sets, a proper clean works wonders, especially if you don't wait and leave it to bond to the bristles overnight. Cleaned in the same way really. We also have new paint purger and cleanser products recently released. Check out our ultimate guide to drybrushing for more tips :)
This method is very well done. But I can't help but feel it could have less contrast between all the color values since the Astartes tend to be a more sobered and nuanced force.
What shades would you recommend for using this stippling technique for a black Space Marine Rhino? Such as a Black Templars, Raven Guard or Iron Hands vehicle. I love the texture this technique gives, but I'm worried about how to make it "read" as black, rather than grey. I followed your "Paint Black Armour Like a Pro - Stormcast Painting Tutorial" for my marines. Would the same Abaddon Black, Eshen Grey, Grey Seer and Ceramite White pallet work on a vehicle? I feel like it would just look grey. As you said at the end you take challenges, would you consider making a vid on black vehicles that match the shades of your "Paint Black Armour Like a Pro" tutorial.
I'm still waiting for my Series D set to come in the mail so I can finally paint up my Maw Krusha and Archaon with ease. Not having a tracking number sucks.
just now going through basically all these videos, and getting so many ideas, now I just need to figure out a colour set for an army that is essentially dark purple, not sure going to the orange or bone which are their accent colours would really work
Mhhhm, good question, it depends if you want it a bit more muted/desaturated, or nuts bright... If you're already starting with a vibrant purple, the bone could be a nice direction to go! If you wanted to keep it cool you can always head toward an ice-blue, it looks great :)
Drybrushing Grey and following with a black wash can look great, starting from a deep-blue base, we're working on this ourselves, and it'll definitely be a full video soon, for now we have a video coming on Sunday which features it a little :).
I've seen you do this paint job in a couple of tutorials now, here and kirioth for example. I love the technique and effect... But the layout annoys me so much. For instance the top doors having the brightest sections striped down the middle. They're effectively a broad flat surface, so they wouldn't have the highlight down the middle of each. Similarly the recessed panels and the door on the side. The technique leaves a shadow all the way around the edge of the panel, and a highlight in the center. It looks so wrong to my mind. Like a miniature that's been panel lined on every single piece. It's cool, but it looks cartoonist to me. I have a land raider Mkiib to paint soon and your brushes, so I'm going to give this a go. But I think I'll preshade with an airbrush in black and white, and use it as a template to follow in my colour progressions.
(perhaps) dumb question - why not just... wash the brush after you're done using it? Wouldn't that be faster and less damaging to the bristles? Oh I get it - you want to sell us MORE brushes once they wear down from all the wiping, thats why? You sneaky you :^)
It's an effect but it looks way to pixel;y to me. Almost like a non HD picture. This is not the way light reflex on a flat surface at all. So it's an effect to uniquely paint a model, but I won't be using it.
Hi dude, it's up to you where you put the highlights, we've gone for the centres here, but there's far more 'realistic' ways to do them too. I actually think the final stages of this were too heavy, and it could have looked more effective with them being lighter.
