Today I will show you how to draw and paint a sweet pea flower in watercolor. We will work on 140# paper and use a #10 round brush. I used transparent watercolors from Yarka in the colors: Lemon Yellow, Hookers green, red rose deep, violet and yellow ocher.

gosh.I just love you so much. your charm is crazy addictive as well as your advice. I love listening to your chitter chatter...(& today...the singing upstairs.) Can I tell you something? Sadly, or gladly...how ever you may want to look at it...when I was in high school I smoked alotta pot. I had quit school in 10th grade & hitchhiked to Lake Placid & Saranac Lake & down to Charlotesville,Va. only to go back to Liverpool NY in 6mo to finish out school & graduate in 71 when I was originally supposed to(by attending day & nite school) taking 2 art classes a day AND SMOKING POT WITH MY ART TEACHERS. (they got me into a group at SU who hung out "getting buzzed & painting") Well. Once I stopped smoking pot I thought my creative art streak went with it. Now I'm 62 & picked up brushes again & I'm having the time of my lie. What a waste of precious time time. Anyways. I really wouldn't change anything but...

This is the 1st place I came to see how to paint some watercolor flowers! I am making an accordion card for my hubby with 8 flowers. thanks so much. I use acrylic and so I'm rusty with my watercolors :)

Hi! I realise that some of the tutorials I'm watching are a couple of years old, it doesn't matter.....just wanted to say, you are making me happy and removing a lot of my selfconciuosness regarding water colour painting. Since I'm a acrylic artist, I find water colour very haaaard, but also very fun! Greetings from Cecilia in Sweden

Hi Lindsay. I love watching your videos! Don't stop "gabbing", that's another thing that makes you so enjoyable!. I noticed you using your credit card to scratch, I have some of the same brushes you used to paint this sweet pea with ( Royal and Langnickel ), and I love them because I use the end of those brushes to do my scratch work. And to clean my fingernails after I'm done painting lol

I just picked up two small 8-pan sets of Yarka paints. I've never heard of this brand but they looked moist and the color was nice and they were on clearance at Hobby Lobby. I can barely stand to pass up cute little watercolor sets and they were only about $2.50 apiece. I'm so surprised to see you using them today! And now I will go use mine!

Wow, I'm trying this painting right now. I've watched this video several times but could not locate my Van Gogh travel set at that time and tried to paint it using a very, very cheap set of children's watercolor paints and I was so disapointed in the results it went straight into the trash. I made the mistake today of using a large brush for the first time because I was trying to build my confidence. NOT, had to go back to my small brush so now I am trying to salvage what I started. I loved this tutorial and it looks easier than it really is. (I'll edit my post when I complete my try) :)

I just noticed something, I didn't do the little hairy thingies on the stem. Crap, I'm going to cheat and use a watercolor pencil that's very sharp for that part. :( Man, I knew I was missing something.

Hi Lindsay. Just got my Yarka watercolors from DickBlick.com for $39.40 - not bad - saw them on eBay for $99! Gotta love Dick Blick! The pink-red color in my set is called Carmine (hue) and the green is called Green (Russian) - sure looks like Hooker's green to me! Got my browns mixed up - they stuck to the removable mixing tray and got out of order so maybe you can help me decipher which is which is which in case I need to replace them some day? There is a chocolaty-brown - Burnt Umber? Then a not so reddish brown - Mars Brown? And a more greenish brown - Raw Umber? Thanks for your help and keep doing the watercolor tutorials! Love them. Have you done any trees without leaves? They would be a fun thing to paint for cards. Thanks, Paula

Lindsay, when you do these tutorials do you always have something for reference to follow? Like a picture, etc. Or do you just know the different flowers so well that you can paint them without it? Thanks

Oh dear! It looks like you changed all the intros to the one with the colored pencils. Just a note the volume is 10x's higher than than the video sound level. I often watch late night when everyone has gone to bed so an increase in volume is heard through out the house. Love your entertaining videos.

In this video, she used lead pencil. You could always just carefully erase after the painting is dried or you could use watercolor pencils.

I just found you about yesterday, and since then you've already landed a huge amount of inspiration on me XD I really want to get more involved with watercolour, becaues it just looks so pretty! And I know you're not so fond of acrylic, but I quite like that too :) I ordered professional quality watercolour W+N (I think I had cheap ones, which aren't that great - but okay to start with) so I can really get into it (I'm taking illustration at uni and need to be looking into lots of mediums and artists) - and I think the 'shiny-ness' of the more expensive paint will probably make me use it more, since it's a new thing :) Like a new pair of shoes! And thanks for replying! :) Can't wait to see your next video

You just keep talking lol we love it. So I have a question does some water color paper absorb better then others because I have just used some that seem to absorb the water way to fast I didn't like it. Just wondering the one I don't like is Master's Touch fine art studio do you know any thing about this paper being awful?

So Lindsay I bought a light box so I wouldn't have to work so hard on drawing and my family tells me that I am cheating. I don't feel like I am cheating because I can focus on learning how to paint more. Plus it feels like the tracing is going to help me improve on my drawing what do you think?
@thefrugalcrafter

go ahead and trace, it will train your eye to draw what you see and not what you think you see.
