Man it's really cool that with just a simple wraithbone undercoat the contrast paints pretty much do all of the work for you.

a layer of matte varnish, or whatever GW equivalent you sell, over the decals should have been applied to kill the shine of the decal and make it blend more on the mini....

Can any undercoat work so long as wraithbone goes on over it? I am brand new to this obviously.

Yes it could but you might need more coats to get full coverage so getting the spray would make things easier, it would be especially difficult if you were painting this bright off white on top of something like chaos black and the additional layers would clog up detail, but something like white scar would be easier. But if you’re planning on painting a scheme buying the specific spray paint is usually the best way to go for coverage alone/time efficiency.
