FINALLY I have found someone who can both paint and teach really well. What a wonderful combination 😍 thank you so much. In a few videos already learning so much more than in months of using other platforms.

Excellent tutorial (as always). Your “beauty tip” @32:29 was especially informative! I’ve not seen/heard anyone else so clearly demonstrate the risks associated with using ‘hair driers’ on watercolor paint/paper. Usually it’s just ‘-use a hair dryer to dry out the wet paint faster-‘. Sometimes they add ‘-be careful not to get it too hot-‘ or ‘-don’t let it move the paint around-‘. But never a clear demonstration with an explanation like yours. Your great skill at and knowledge of watercolour while it’s happening on the paper which you can communicate so clearly is (I think) why many of us return often to your videos. You are teaching 'foundational knowledge' not just 'do this, do that' without crucial details of why/how. Kudos to the videographer and beware of the fence posts!! { ;= )

Great skies detail and no tissues used to blot out clouds. The results are really lovely. Learnt a lot more from you today about mixing paint for warm and cool - well, a bit more understanding of the technique, because you always indicate the warm/cool transition in your tutorials. 😊

I appreciate how you share the colors used and explain why you use those colors. I have more understanding of how warm and cool colors move things forward or back. Every little detail you use is explained and taught as to why that technique is used. Thank you so much for your great teaching of every detail, including the problems involved with using a hair dryer. I love how you share so many wonderful tips.

I am so grateful you are giving skies a lot of coverage, I am practising them a lot at present. I recall a very good friend and advisor on photography many years ago, who simply reminded me `you will have a lot of waste paper in your bin to start with, but it will reduce` I used to expect a good painting every time, when I first started watching your channel ;)

I cant speak English so well but I learn a lot about watercolor painting. You are so pedagogic and I learn English too. I wonder about cadmium colors are they not negativ to nature? What can I use insted? And I think your filosofi of what watercolor painting means are so right! Any one can feel the same and cant paint whit the same feeling. I use to copy what you do must say but now I going to start my own travel across watercolor so thanks. Your videos are amazing!

Have you done, or could you DO a video explaining warm and cool colors and when and how to use them effectively. I know what the warm and cool colors ARE, but I'm not sure on the theory on using them properly. Loved the video one the skies. I've had trouble with them but am getting better and this video really helped! Thanks! David, WV, USA

Thanks for yet another educational video, Oliver. I have a question about preserving the painting after it has been completed. Do you use watercolour varnish, like Daler Rowney's? Or do you frame it as it is? Or do you use some other method? Again, thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks so much for this video as I am learning heaps from it. However, I am confused! I thought you were adding raw sienna to the blue cad red mix in order to make shadows. I thought adding raw sienna would be warming it up and when you were adding less sienna that was for the cooler bottom clouds. But then almost 22 minutes in you say you are adding raw sienna to cool the sky down....?? You are confusing this old lady!

Adding burnt sienna to blue is not cooling down blue or is it? Isn’t that a way to desaturate blue?
@susalu100
@susalu100 Год назад
Raw sienna "cool" the blue down? I always new that adding a warmer colour will warm a cold colour... Am I wrong? Could you explain, please? your skies look incredible fresh and beautiful, thank you so much for helping us to understand this very difficult material.
@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442
Blue is colder than RS - you're correct. However, any blue from cobalt (neutral) towards ultramarine is what I describe as a warm blue (ie it has red in it.) By adding RS, an earthy yellow, it neutralises the blue, pulling it towards the green side of the blues. If you look at the colour wheel, you'll see the blue moving away from the red/purple side of the chart and toward the cooler green/yellow side. Clearly the colour is still cooler relative to what is being added (RS) but it is not warming up the original colour (blue) - purple/red/orange would be needed to achieve that. One thing to note....my RS by Daler Rowney is an unusual colour, being more yellow than many other brands' RS, so it does have the effect of cooling the blue. Good question - thanks for posting it.
@susalu100
@susalu100 Год назад
@@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442 I see, I did not consider ultramarine as a warm blue, I did not know it has red in it. The neutralizer effect of RS pushes it to the cooler side of the wheel (greens) though RS is warm by itself. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain!!

If I use glazing in every painting of mine...does that mean I'm not sure of mixing exact hues?
@oliverpyle-ourlandscape4442
Not necessarily, unless you feel that you are doing it to correct/overpaint a colour that you weren't happy with. Glazing is a good way of adding variety to larger areas in a painting.
