If you want to save money by painting tiles then remove them first. It's an extra hour or two of work but saves you in the long run. Otherwise, the tiles stick to the grid and this negates the purpose of REMOVABLE tiles (future maintenance access, pulling wires, etc.). The grid is made of metal and requires a different type of paint (direct-to-metal), otherwise it will start peeling after a couple months.

My thoughts exactly, I would remove them and paint them then put them back. What about the grids though, would you just paint them with a brush when the tiles are off?

Wouldn’t it be easier and just As effective to cover the grids with painter’s tape, rather than take the tiles down?

Happy to know I can do this on my own very yellowed and worn looking dropped ceiling panels in my basement "rec room." Also appreciate picking up the additional tips from the commenters, I will be sure to remove the panels and paint them individually/separately from the alumimum frames.

As a professional Painter, I would never suggest to anyone painting a drop ceiling to using this technique. As mentioned by Kirill Meyerovich it is best to remove the ceiling tiles and painting them separately from the grid (unless you're using an airless paint sprayer and have experience and knowledge of using one). For painting the grid with a roller use a three inch roller frame with a 1/4" or 3/16" nap roller cover. For painting the ceiling tiles use a 3/8" or 1/2" roller cover with a 9" frame. Do not apply heavy coats of paint to either surfaces. It is best to apply two thin coats. That will avoid drips, runs, or paint build ups on the grid (especially where the T's connect to the mains) and the ceiling tiles from swelling.

I know this is an old comment but I have a question to ask. If I spray a primer over the panels (after taking them all out of the ceiling like you've said) do I still need to use a ceiling paint or could I just use any white paint? Also after spraying a metal primer on the grid, could I use the same white paint I used on the tiles or would I need a metal paint as well? I've tried looking this stuff up but I can't find a good answer so I thought I'd ask here.

@@m0sshroom If you are using a professional paint sprayer with a pressure control, you do not need remove the tiles. You would need to just rest the tiles on top of the grid on their four corners. Set the paint sprayer pressure as low as possible. Professionals that work and do this in the institutions and commercial environments call this fogging. Make sure the grid is clean (free of rust, oils etc...) you can use vinegar and water to wiping the grid down with. Paint color can be any color. However, it be best to using a high quality primer\paint in one. This is best two coats. The pressure set low you will not be using a lot of paint, and you will have a higher quality. In institutions and commercial environments where ceiling are just white, I only use a primer.

Does anyone have a suggestion for painting non-removable acoustic tiles at my childhood home? They were popular in casual rooms in a house during the 1950s/60s. I am not ready to replace them but might in the future. A few tiles were stained by a leaking roof in the past. I know a stain block needs to be used for those areas.

I agree with the other comments, personally I would take them out 1 by 1 and paint the tiles fully off the frame. Then if you wanted to paint the frame which is made of Aluminium, its worth noting that aluminium is non-pourous so you need a specialist aluminium primer, otherwise its going to start easily chipping or flaking off and trust me, this will cause more issues for the next guy who then has to prep the whole thing in order to do it properly.

Wow, that seems like a shortcut to me. Take each tile out paint them one by one. If you want to paint the metal of the drop ceiling do that separate. You will have paint dry with them touching doing it your way and if you need to move a tile the paint is gonna rip off one.
@gameoflife7235

That's kind of the point... drop ceilings aren't typically worth the time. For ripping, just slice edges with a utility knife.

All fun and games until you try and paint dark grey tinted kilz as a primer for an even darker paint. I used almost a gal on 13, 2x4 tiles..and it still isnt in all the divets. I cant even take them down, some idiot put the ceiling flush with the ceiling above it..like whats the point?.

Here’s a question. How do you get that paint off without damaging the tiles? I work with a lot of restaurants that try to paint over dirty ceilings, and it becomes impossible to get them clean once the paint is on there. So how would you efficiently and effectively remove paint from an entire vinyl tiled ceiling?
@calvinwong365
@calvinwong365 12 дней назад
Going to do this now. And man tryna so this the right way is alot of work. But spraying paint on it even worst. Not expert on this literally running back and forth from home Depot to restaurants and returning stuff. Thank god I'm only doing the front of the restaurant. About 20 tiles. In the kitchen side. Fuck that. Doing this while on vacation. Already taking up all my time

$10 a tile for 20 tiles and some bladed is $200. Paint, primer and supplies, including floor drops and tape is easily 245 (not everyone likes paint splatter and over spray) It also takes much less labor to replace the tiles than it does to paint 4 coats of paint on a 160 sq ft ceiling its like half the time... 12 mins for each tile is only 4 hours which is the minimum dry time for all those coats of paint. And I'm being generous. It literally takes 3 minutes to pop out and pop in a new tile for most of them and then not even 12 to make a cut. DO NOT PAINT OVER CEILINGS.

I love to just remove the tiles for our restaurant as well. But our landlord are cheap ass mother fuckers. They been talking about replacing or fixing the roof top for longest time and nothing ever done. I'm afraid replacing tiles then all of sudden I need to replace it again. Been telling them to replace the front aluminum frame cause salt ate away the surfaces and nothing is done. So at some point if this is residential vs commercial, you gotta decide what's worth it not. Especially if you trying to attract customers into a restaurant.

Why dont you just use a sprayer? This is crazy.
@gameoflife7235
@gameoflife7235 4 года назад
There are pros and cons. Not everyone can afford an airless sprayer, especially if they just use it once. Not worth it. Also no masking required. This is a method anyone can do for just a few dollars and minimal prep.

I have a question wouldn't it be easier just to take the tiles down and paint them then put them back up when they're dry?
@hazeltyler89
@hazeltyler89 3 года назад
@@Johncollins219 No. You have to map every one and if you've ever had to install or remove ceiling tiles that fit properly, it's a royal pain and can often result in broken tiles when trying to re-fit them. I'm a very picky pro painter but this method, whilst not perfect, is better than living with discoloured or messed up tiles. Painting everything out to the same colour hides a lot of imperfections. Spraying is ideal but not everyone can afford a sprayer or spend the ridiculous amount of time it takes to protect every other surface in the vicinity.
@Lolatyou332
@Lolatyou332 2 года назад
The poster of the video apparently has so little money he can't afford a 40$ sprayer. I don't know how much money he spent on the paint, but given his other replies I'm assuming he legit scraped the paint off of another existing wall just to save money so that he can put it on his acoustic tiles.
@JTMarlin8

Please could you elaborate on what you said. I don’t know what’s wrong with painting ceiling tiles? I’m about to do that or spray them, due to the air space behind them were completely filled with insulation. So due to time and a pain in the ass I’m doing them in place.
@Lolatyou332
@Lolatyou332 2 года назад
@@RobertBangers They naturally absorb sound and make the room quieter. By painting them the paint will reflect the sound and cause the room to be louder. This is especially annoying in basements where you have utilities running and the sound bounces off the walls and allows the sound to reach a longer distance (which could reach upstairs through available airway)
