We're continuing to use the Diorama Blitz Kino model kit sent to me by Doug Foscale.
This week we're painting the cobble stone street. It's based on the streets I saw this summer in Lisbon and I wanted a bluish toned cobble with cement between it.
The "Real" World photos are all from my tuktuk ride in Lisbon. It had some great inspiring streets and buildings.
Materials
Car Primer - I used Halfords grey
Vallejo - Intermediate Blue - 70.903 and French Mirage Blue - 70.900
Vallejo - Black Grey - 70.862
Dark Enamel Wash - AK Interactive and Ammo by Mig all sell versions.
Tamiya - Red Brown - XF-64
AK Interactive Dark Steel Pigment - AK-086
Beige Tile Grout
Isopropyl Alcohol and Water Mix (1:2)
White Glue and Water Mix (1:2)
Index
00:15 Real World
00:52 Method
10:11 Final Result

This vid couldn't have come at a better time. I'm modelling a diorama base that's EXACTLY like this (pavement, ruin, cobbles, scratch-built gutter) and watching this, I can see how I can improve on what I'm doing. Thanks, Kathy!

Seems to never fail Kathy; I went searching for a "how-to" about painting a darker cobblestone road and here you are! I've used a few of your videos to aid me in modeling and they have all been very understandable, easy to follow, and easy to do. Thank YOU for what you do to help us modelers. -Mike

Great video! Nice trick the isopropyl alcohol. I usually mix a bit of soap or glass cleaner with the water/pva mix to break water tension. You also can use different types of sand instead of spackle to combine different colors, my favourite one is beach sand.

Thanks! I’ve never thought of using glass cleaner. I did try washing up liquid but the bubbles showed sometimes!

I have made myown washes for years in either enamal or acrilic. So if anyone wants that amazing brown mix, just add orange and blue in small quantitys. you will find the tone you want with a little experrimentation and go from there.

My favourite vallejo is German Camo black brown 70.822 it's the best paint I've come by it's so thick aswell it lasts ages you just need a tiny bit but still buy 2 bottles every year one does and I use it constantly for chipping and metal armo bare armor work and it dries so nice and different it's fantastic with a dry brush metal paint or pigment it's a right textured high pigment paint it's just fantastic

Thanks for the how to video Kathy. The use of grout is a new one on me but produces a very effective result. As a matter of interest, does this method work on finer relief such as OO gauge plasticard? Paul
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 6 лет назад
Paul, it should do but it does depend how deep your particular grooves are. If it doesn’t, pigments like I used on the brick in a previous video will work instead as they are a bit finer.

Hi great instructional video it helps alot. One question, if you want to paint the final grout layer between the cobbles, let's say colour dark brown to represent earth muddy sand, which technique to paint would you recommend? With a dark wash? Thanks!
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 4 года назад
I often paint mortar layers first in an acrylic and then dry brush the cobbles. A wash works well too though.

Many Thanks for such a clear and concise 'how to' vid, no fancy technical names for the products used, no 'pretend' secret recipes, just good old, straight forward this is how i do this.. other 'how to' creators need to take note.. adding a posh or made up name to a handful of tile grout doesn't make your 'how to' special, it makes it unwatchable.. many thanks Kathy

Hi Kathy, I always come to your videos for your techniques as they just work! Thanks! Question: 9:38 in the video you show the street as finished but in the following "The Final Result" the colors are totally different (at least on my 4k screen). Which is the true colour please as I am trying hard, and failing with all my different mixes to get the right colour which is more like the one at 9:38. Thanks!
@KathyMillatt

White balance is a pain as I have big windows next to my workbench so it changes through the day. I did add some colours to a couple of the photos to make it look bleak but the videos are just straight out of camera.

Sanded or unsanded refers to the grit of the grout normally sanded is much finer and works better on thinner grout lines so I guess the answer would be you would want sanded if you wanted it to get into real fine crick's and crevices
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 6 лет назад
I guess we’d have wall versus floor grout as something similar but many grouts are for both.
@pieseasmyseas
@pieseasmyseas 6 лет назад
Wall will most likely be the same as sanded it's finer and scale wise it's better

Hello Kathy. You use powder at 6.19. What kind of powder? And ... are the stones of clay?
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 5 лет назад
It’s just tile grout. It comes in a wide range of colours and this is a beige. The cobbles are part of the hydro cal (plaster) casting which came with the kit.
@Stottman1
@Stottman1 6 лет назад
I am sure it varies by location and era, but cobblestones in SW Germany are not cemented or mortared in like brick. Its generally a fine gravel or sometimes even just dirt. Mortar would defeat the purpose, as cobblestone is removable and easily reinstalled.
