Lovely! Thank you for sharing! I tried your little white flower painting from a few days ago and when I went to remove the masking fluid it torn down the page. I scrapped it and used a white china pencil to make my white flowers and it came out alright. Do you have a facebook account so that we can show you some of the paintings we do? Oh and I love the tip about painting an area and then leaving it alone. If I could remember that, I think my paintings would improve. I just rush through them though. I almost never let things dry and I know that is my problem. I guess I need to find some patience!

Such a lovely painting! I have a question. I'm still learning watercolor,and I feel as if I'm not getting any better. I'm using student grade paper and paints . I practice a lot. Do you think maybe I should get better grade paper and paints? Thank you

Thank you Elizabeth for your comment and question. Sorry you feel you are not getting better at watercolour, it can be very frustrating. I think the paper can make a tremendous difference! I would treat yourself to some artist watercolour paper. Even a small pad to start with...Arches, Winsor & Newton, Fabriano Artistico and Saunders Waterford are the best. Make sure you buy at least 300gms and a Not surface. Hope this was helpful :)

Elizabeth, I think better quality paper is more important than paints at this point! Make sure you are buying cold press. Not sure where you are located but in the US you want at least 140 lb. Remember you can always cut larger pieces down. You will find that quality paper will stay wet longer which allows you to blend your pigments more effectively. Upgrade paints as you can afford to. Always buy the best materials you can afford. Higher pigmented paints will help but I'd spring for the paper first. Good luck and happy painting!

Do you need to wet the white paper to get things to be sort of cohesive? Not sure if that makes sense… I mean all the white paper that is being left white.

I would wet the background and avoid painting wetting the white flower otherwise the background paint will run into the white flower. To get things looking more harmonious you could use the same colours on the background in the flower itself 😊

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I love your paintings. My personal feeling about using white gouache in watercolour painting is that it is no longer a watercolour painting. I just can't bring myself to do it.

Hi Karen, Thanks for your amazing tutorials I am really enjoying learning to paint during the lockdown. Hoping you can advise me though. I bought framing tape after seeing you using it & having previously used making tape myself. After doing my latest painting I am finding it impossible to remove the tape. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you Virginia for your comment and question. I am not quite sure why it's not coming off...could be your paper. If you use a blow dryer on the tape, the heat may make it easier to take it off? Hope this helps. Happy painting :)

Hi Karen, thank you for your videos, it’s inspired me to pick up my paints more often. I’ve followed along a couple of them and was pleasantly surprised with the results! A question... how do you decide whether to do the background or main subject (flower) first? (I’ve seen tutors doing it either way, and I’m curious as to the process)

Thank you so much and for your great question. If I’m painting a flower that is not white I usually paint the flower first. However if I’m painting a white or very light coloured flower I usually paint the background first, so it brings the flower out. It’s just my process. Hope this was helpful :-)

What a Wonderful channel, thank you so much Karen! A clarifying question: for the centers of the flowers you mention that you use wet on wet technique. do you first add paint onto the dry paper, and then drop other paint into this color and then add more water on a clean brush to soften the edges and spread it out a bit, or do you pre-wet the area in the center of the flower first (I didn’t see pre-wetting part so am a bit confused)? Does wet on wet mean that you wet the paper first, or that you add wet paint into a different wet paint? Thanks so much!

I don't have masking liquid or pen and in this lockdown it's not possible to get either. Any other alternative? I do have a masking tape

I am glad to find you! I am a messy girl when I try water color, precisely the kind you mentioned. Yes I can't resist going over and paint more on the area I have already painted. Either for correcting some mistake or just to make it better. Thank you for emphasizing "not to do that". I am going to make a small poster and keep in front of me while doing watercolor painting from now onward. I like your way of painting. I like your informative instructions. After poppies this is the 2nd video I saw. I am going to see more of yours for sure.
