Today on Ivy Lane Interiors we are going to paint IKEA Billy Bookcases! IKEA furniture is often laminate, but you can paint laminate with the proper prep.
Here are 4 easy steps:
1. Scuff sand with 220 grit & remove dust
2. Apply liquid sandpaper (my first secret) to make sure you have the entire surface etched up and ready for primer. Not a required step, but I like to add it for extra insurance.
3. Primer - Bin Shellac primer (my second secret) is the best primer for laminate. It comes in a can or you can apply it with a fine nap roller. The paint cans are the easiest application. Scuff sand after 1st coat, remove dust and apply a second coat. Scuff sand, remove dust and you are ready for paint.
4. I chose Command paint by Benjamin Moore. To smooth it out, I added a little Floetrol (bonus secret). You can apply it with a brush and roller (fine nap) or spray it. Two to three coats and you should be good to go!
