There is more pressure on the side of the roller that is closest to handle. Therefore, if you make sure that metal bump in the handle is pointing in the direction that you are painting, you will minimize the lines.😊

Is there a reason you sand then prime then sand again ? Then paint ? Just trying to learn as I will be using this exact piece from ikea to paint
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife Месяц назад
@@raisingkaras5240 Yep! The scuff sand will help take off the glossy texture of any piece and give the primer more grip on the surface. Then I do a quick sand on the primer to get down any texture or brushstrokes because this type of primer drives very quickly, so because of that it gets texture more easily. But it's very easy to do a quick sand on. And that way once you paint over it then it won't have those brushstrokes and texture showing from the primer underneath. Sometimes people even do scuff sand between paint layers, but if you can get the finish smooth enough with the paint you don't need to do that. Hope you have fun with your project!! 😊

Pre soak your brush in denatured alcohol before priming with Zinsser BIN shellac primer. It helps a little. The only way I found to clean the brush is to soak it in a glass jar (like a big pickle jar) with a lid filled with denatured alcohol. Doesn't get them perfectly clean, but I can usually get a couple more uses out of the brush if I do that to clean them. Brushes are expensive, so I try to get a couple uses out of them, but in the end, all shellac brushes end up in the garbage.
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 4 месяца назад
Yeah that shellac really is rough on brushes, I try to just use a roller and throw it away or cheap brush, but that's a good tip with the denatured alcohol 👍🏻 I didn't know that would help before application. I do wish it was more friendly in a paint gun, did that once and learned my lesson haha, the alcohol can clean the paint gun out but that's a process.

Murphys Wood Oil Soap. 😃 When I am in the middle of a bigger project with lots of different colors/brushes I keep a mason jar full of Murphys and all of my used paintbrushes, and then at the end of my project I just clean all my brushes all at the same time. 😅 It’s also the best I’ve found to help bring stiff brushes back to life (though I’ve never tried it with a completely dry, rock hard brush). The bristles are always super soft after they dry, which is a bonus 🙂

I'm confused. I've been told in paint stores and read so many times that you never mix oil-based and water based products because the paint will peel. But it seems you primed with oil-based products and then topped with latex paint? Am I correct with this? Thanks for your help.
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife Месяц назад
@@californiagirl2461 Hi! No problem!😊 This primer is shellac based and this paint is an alkyd enamel👍🏻 I usually prefer not to use latex paint because it tends to peel more than others, once in a while I will use it, but it requires very good prep prime and topcoat, but I'd rather just use other types of paint like this enamel because it's more durable. Typically the rule with oil and water products is to not layer them, you're right! There are some products that are exceptions to the rules like Minwax polycrylic can actually go over an oil base stain, but you'd have to make sure that the oil based stain has a few days of dry time before applying your topcoat. And so this is good news if you wanted a matte finish top coat, but you used an oil based stain, for example.
@Plazman
@Plazman Месяц назад
Super cool, but such a shame to invest so much effort into particle board furniture. Doesn't seem like a big leap to do that with something more durable. It looks so good, it's a shame it will be in pieces 5-10 years from now. Maybe that's the way furniture is nowadays. Still super cool what you did.
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife Месяц назад
@@Plazman Thank you!! 😊 I really appreciate that!! You're right, particleboard and MDF don't typically last as long as solid wood depending on who the owner is. The woman who bought this is using it partially as a decorative piece and doesn't have little kids so it will probably last quite a long time😊 My predicament on doing this on solid wood is that people tend to get mad when you paint solid wood furniture haha, it's kind of a win some and lose some thing 😄 I am currently brainstorming this vibe on a solid wood dresser I have though actually! 😊

I have 2 night stands that look similar to the before...can I just stain it or painting is better?
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 2 месяца назад
@@NayNay-ex5kq for this dresser, there's no real wood on it. It's just a glossy white covering over particleboard, so you can't stain it as far as anything being able to be absorbed into wood grain. Sometimes you can do like a gel stain if you want to just smear it on the outside, but to get this look, you have to prime first ( so the paint will stick really well) and then paint it. And then topcoat if the paint needs it 👍🏻😊

I keep trying different methods, rollers, paint brushes, good paint, thinned, not thinned, sand, sand, sand, and I can’t seem to avoid brush marks and/or roller marks. What could I be doing wrong?
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 10 месяцев назад
I think the first two paints that I would recommend for leveling would be either this paint (the Benjamin Moore Advance line) or Valspar cabinet and furniture oil-enriched enamel. Both are really strong and have really amazing leveling. I use the Wizz brand foam roller, and Zibra brush for angles typically. When you put the paint on, you don't want too much on your roller because that will increase texture. When you first roll out the area, each time you pass over that area again with the foam roller you need to have less and less pressure and that will pop the bubbles and diminish the texture, but you have to make sure to not keep messing with it once it starts trying to dry because then you'll make more texture. Sometimes adding a little bit of Floetrol to the paint will also help it level, if you're working with a finicky paint. Some people will also use a spray mist bottle on the area before they apply the paint but if you're working with particleboard, I wouldn't recommend that, since water can start messing with the material. I have a video that might help you with texture issues, it's my video on black paint finishes, I'll try to link it here for you 🙂 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mZxcUbTVBlg.htmlsi=n-5JV4ouI4J5zStn

A paint shop can mix color in your primer to match the top coat. This is if you use a normal paint primer not from a spray bottle.

@therefurbishedlife 2 месяца назад
Yep! But for 1 quart of Zinsser BIN I could do probably 5 different projects and I'm never sure what color I'm gonna do next, whether I'll need a light or dark primer. Maybe I should leave one container regular and have another tinted dark🤔 I'm using a clear shellac for my dark project right now.

What grid of sand paper did you use in between primer ? Also what kind of wood filler do you like best on a laminate piece . I have an ikea file I need do repair but it is white & I need to keep it white , thank you
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 10 месяцев назад
I used 220 grit sandpaper. Generally my favorite wood filler all around is the metal cans of Plastic Wood by DAP. I would say it's probably the next step down from Bondo in strength if you're needing to repair corners or things like that. But on little fills like the holes on this trim after I used the nail gun it's not necessary to have that, so I just used Minwax wood filler in white, that comes in a tube. 👍🏻😊

How much sheen is added when you added that topcoat, even though the topcoat was matte?
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 8 месяцев назад
There is a bit of sheen in the topcoat when compared with the extremely matte finish the paint has. I use that topcoat on most of my projects and it's done a nice job, however I just purchased General Finishes "flat out flat" topcoat, which has really excellent reviews for staying truly matte better than most competitors, it is on the more spendy side though. I'll show you guys how it works out on the next video I'm working on!😊

@@therefurbishedlifedo you also add top coat to the drawers? Or just the top of the cabinet. If to the drawers, do you still use the sponge or how do you handle all the grooves?
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 2 месяца назад
@@brittneymerryweather9405 on this one I only added it to the top, but on almost every project I add poly to the entire piece. When you're dealing with angles, I would suggest either using a foam applicator-the kind that has a wooden handle, or a really good synthetic bristle brush like Zibra brand, those typically have a much smoother application than natural bristle brushes!👌🏻 😊

I got the same procrylic top coat and it recommends sanding with 220 grit between coats. Did you do that in your video? I didnt see a segment where you mentioned if you did or if you skipped the sanding between coats. Thanks so much for making this video, I've been coming back to it over and over for reference when painting my Ikea storage shelves, which I'm still in the middle of the project!
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 4 месяца назад
I'm so happy to hear that this video has been helpful on your project!! Thank you!! 😊 So with the sanding between, I often don't sand between poly just because when I use the blue sponge it's usually sufficiently smooth for my taste, but you can definitely make it even smoother sanding between coats (skipping the last coat) Once in a while, they'll be like a little fuzzy from the air or speck of scratchy dust or something in the finish, so a sand between coats could definitely help that, especially if you live in a home with pets. Some people have more texture with poly when they're using a paintbrush or other types of applicators, but the blue sponge makes it really nice👌🏻😊

@@therefurbishedlifehello your work is amazing i’m trying to refurbish my bedroom dressers. Of course I never done this before. Laughing out loud. Just need a little guidance. Do I first sand then prime sand again then paint?
@therefurbishedlife
@therefurbishedlife 5 месяцев назад
@@katrinahall2253 Thank you, that's really kind of you!!😊 Yep, you're correct!:) Generally the rule of thumb if you are painting furniture is to make sure you do the prep work first, starting with a cleaner that's a good degreaser-I generally use diluted TSP alternative, but you can use Mean Green or krud Kutter, or whichever you prefer. Afterwards you just wipe off the residue with a damp rag👍🏻 then you need to scuff sand the piece ( this will remove the shine and help the primer adhere) and then apply your primer. There are a few different primers that I would suggest, but generally the one with most adhesion for me is BIN shellac based primer. I usually do two quick coats then let dry and do a quick sand of any texture (this type of primer sands really easily and quickly) 👍🏻 Then you go ahead with whatever paint you like to use, some paints required topcoats and others don't. If you're going for a very durable paint I would recommend an enamel base paint, Behr and Valspar have some good ones:) But if you're worried about durability, a polycrylic or polyurethane top coat afterwards is never gonna hurt! With topcoats, ones that are oil based tend to have a yellowing effect over time which is fine if your your paint is black or another dark color but if you're painting your furniture white or something light, it might be good to use a water-based topcoat which shouldn't yellow😊

Thank you so much!! Yep you can use a water based top coat or oil based over this type of paint, it's the Advance line which is a waterborne Alkyd enamel 👍🏻 I order the round blue sponges off Amazon, hopefully the link for them works properly down in my description area 😊 My situation with the daylight hours is that I don't have a proper lit place to work past dark hours inside-no room for doing furniture, or a shop or car garage or something like that, so I have to work outside during daylight or inside our living area where there's not very good lighting. I have a regular job during the day so by the time I get home there's not much daylight left in the winter, but I'm glad for better weather and longer days come summertime! 😊 Thank you for your comment!!
