Learning how to paint pearl can be confusing at first.
If you ask 10 painters how they would paint with pearl or flake I think you'll get 7 different answers.
How To Paint Pearl Colors
There really is no right or wrong way. It's all based on testing out what works for you and experience. When painting with pearl I usually mix my pearl right into my clear coat. Some guys mix in clear coat, some guys like to use an intercoat.
There are a few reasons why you may want spray one way VS the other. I'll explain below.
Newbies: If you're a beginner, you may want to use an intercoat like DBC or DBU 500 by PPG or one of House of Kolor products like the SG150 intercoat pearl and flake Karrier.

I'm doing a project to paint my gravel bike and a friend gave me DBU 500 and a green pearl, I painted it yesterday and tomorrow I want to throw clear coat on it. my ??? Question is do I have to sand ( wet sand 1500 or less ) the DBU with pearls before applying the clear coat. Thanks and greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷

Hey Man! Yes you can wet sand with 1500-grit sandpaper it can help smooth out any imperfections, orange peel texture, or dust particles that might have settled on the base coat. A simple formula to remember is run control is an air pressure adjustment. If you’re getting a few runs try upping the air pressure 5-10 pounds more.

The run vs no run makes sense when using intercoat or clear coat. If you were going to add more color layers after (like candy paint and graphics), does that change it?

I'm doing a two tone paint on my truck, Ingot silver on top, charcoal grey metallic on bottom, was thinking of adding some silver flake and red pearl to the clear coat. Should I put the flake in the paint and the pearl in the clear or can should I put both the pearl and flake in the first coat of clear and then two more coats of straight clear over top. I'm looking to get the red hugh depending on the angle you look

Tony, gotta question. When mixing the flake in the clear, I mixed my clear with activator, them mixed my flakes, sprayed 2-3 coats after tacking of each and then mix more clear/activator (no flakes) as my top/final coat. Is that correct?

I am looking to repaint my truck. Can I clean up and paint over my existing paint, there are no flakes or cracks in the paint, a few chips that need to be addressed. What would be the best way to address the chips.
@HowToPaintYourCar
@HowToPaintYourCar 2 года назад
Hey Man! Well, if you’re a VIP, definitely check out the VIP videos, we have tons of information, tons of videos step by step that show you multiple ways to fix paint chips. vip.learnautobodyandpaint.com/exclusivevip So like one of the ways is to basically feather them out. If you have a couple of paint chips on the car, what you’re going to do is use the tip of your DA and you can just hit it with a good angle. A good angle like one way and then go the other way, make a T. Then flat to basically feather the chips out into the paint. The other thing you could do is just sand the whole thing down. If you want to just go flat all the way you can just do that, prime it. What you could also do is hit it with a rougher paper maybe like a 320 grit. Then if they were painted multiple times or deep chips you can just put some glazing putty over it, one way and the other way. Make sure they fill in the blocks handed out but it depends on the paint chips, it depends where they are or how much you got. And if you have a lot of them across the whole front of the hood of a car it’s best if you just take it down to metal and then start from a scratch primer. But if you have like a couple of paint chips and they’re super deep you could also fill them with spot putty. Hope this helps!

Does anyone have any advice about disappearing flake? I'm dealing with slightly different materials. Mixing bronzing powder into black lacquer base-coat. It's achieving the look I want, which is more subtle, but as soon as I apply a clear coat to the sample, the flake all but completely disappears. Thoughts?

20-25g per gallon is standard, but depending on how strong you want the effect to be it could easily vary 10-75g per gallon.
@djtren63
@djtren63 9 лет назад
This may sound dumb. But can you use a Metal chrome paint has a base? Is it translucent enough to go over metal flake? Will The metal chrome give a reflective sheen under the top coating? Just curious.
@tantaloss8682
@tantaloss8682 2 года назад
Anything can be a base so long as it's a material that your next paint will stick to. As always, it depends on the exact paints you're using. However, the chrome reflectiveness will only show through if the coats on top are at least partially transparent. Again, it depends on the paint. For candy coats, definitely will. For flat colors, probably won't.
@HowToPaintYourCar
@HowToPaintYourCar 11 лет назад
Micro sequence flake is very fine flake and ok to use in a intercoat. Be careful with jimbo flake, you need to take your filter out of the gun to avoid blockage. Jumbo is usually sprayed in clears with no gun filters... you'll also have to add a few coats of clear only) over jumbo flake too because it will protrude through the clear giving you a rough surface. Learn more on the blog!

Dude intercoat is NOT for so called 'newbies' you can get runs just as easy as its only base coat without pigments, Intercoat is alot better for pearls and flakes less build less work Ive never mixed flakes etc in with clearcoat. Ask any hotrod painter and they will tell you to use an intercoat also whats not said here is dont forget to seal your flakes with your intercoat with no flakes or pearls if your adding kandy over the top you must have a super smooth base for this.

Doing insurance work requires you to match existing paint, so tri coats are the standard body shop procedure. Adding pearl/flake to the clear is basically for COMPLETE CAR jobs. Even then, you are trapped to that specific application choice for all future paint repairs.... which is harder to match or blend. I paint w/o runs too! And I'm not a newbie. At 15 years, you're the NEWBIE brother.

Bad tactic! Always shoot pearls and flake as mid coat, NEVER mix it in urethane clears. Strict reason not to, the clear loses its ability to chemically adhere to the basecoat, because of suspended particles, or "trash" in the clear, ultimately, what you're doing is throwing dirt in your clear, the clear will inevitably delaminate. It may come out "cool", but it could come back to haunt you. In my experience, if you're doing custom work, you'd want to shoot with DBC because not only does it spray properly, but, you create a time window for your paint work, by utilizing basecoat for your effects, you can continuously work on your panel without bypassing your window to re-sand. Experience is a must to shoot any mid-coat, but it doesn't matter if you're "affraid" to "run" it, it's all about confidence, attention to detail, and understanding the PROPER way to apply a transparent paint.

@jacobhentschel2111
@jacobhentschel2111 4 года назад
It's not tho, it's the wrong application method, bottom line. What happens in the clear is that it loses the ability to contact the surface because the pearl rests underneath, not to mention, it completely obliterates the UV protection of the clear because sunlight passes thru the clear reflecting light from the pearls, back up thru the clear, diminishing its ability to provide UV protection. Those are problems painters should consider that you didnt establish in this video.
