The mark of an expert is the ability to explain and then demonstrate a technique clearly and simply. Well done Sir, well done indeed.

Thank you so much for the comment, it is highly appreciated. I hope the video was helpful. There are so many way to paint decks, some are complicated and require masking etc. I just wanted to show that a nice wood deck can be achieved without a bunch of masking and washes. I'm not saying those methods are wrong, I just have a different approach. Thank you again for the comment and for watching the video. Best Wishes!

Thank you for your comment! The intent of the video is to demonstrate that a nice "wood looking" deck can be achieved with a little work and patience. The aftermarket decks are cool but they can be expensive, or not available depending on the model. Plus, there is a certain amount of satisfaction in painting the deck yourself. The technique is simple for the most part and, as you mentioned, flexible in color. Good luck on your build. Please let me know how it worked for you once you go for it. Best wishes!

Excellent tutorial, I recently visited a number of WWII and older ships including HMS Victory and the wooden decks were scrubbed to a uniform grey colour. Your work is an inspiration.

Thank you for your comment. There have been basically two opinions on the appearance of wooden decks for model ships. Some say to use just one shade and no planking effects and the other approve the look of a planked deck. I think that it is up to the modeler to make their decision on what they want. The aftermarket decks can get expensive and I wanted to show that it is possible to get a decent looking wooden deck without breaking the bank. Of course the aftermarket deck is hard to surpass but if the modeler doesn't want to go that route, this method is an alternative. And, as I have mentioned, I like doing it myself. Thank you for watching the video and for your comment, both are highly appreciated. Best wishes!

Best wishes on painting your next wood deck! This technique is very flexible. You can have a darker deck or lighter deck depending on your base coat color. Also, don't forget about the power of using pastel chalk. Subtle color changes can be easily achieved with the stroke of a brush. If you have never used pastel chalk before you may want to play around with the technique. Thanks for the comments and for watching.

Thank you for watching and for your comments. I was trying to develop a reasonable way to paint a ship deck and make it appear somewhat "real" looking. I was going to purchase the aftermarket deck for the 1/200 scale USS Arizona but decided to give painting the deck a try and save $85.00. I wasn't too sure I pulled it off but I have gotten many positive comments on the Arizona deck, including a request for a "how to" video, which lead to the creation of this video. I'm pleased that this technique is being so welcomed. It is very easy and, as you mentioned, less complicated than other techniques to paint a wood deck. Best wishes on your build and thank you again for the comments.

You could just paint it 'wood' then get a watered down black paint or dark brown and just dab it into the cracked of the wood. Easy enough 😅
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
Yes! That technique would work just fine too! It really depends on what the builder wants. This video simply offers an alternative to the expensive laminate deck applications. As I mentioned in the video, this is just one of many ways to paint a deck. The method you describe will also work just fine, it just depends on what the builder wants. I apologize for the late reply to your post. I read it before and thought I sent a reply. Thanks for leaving a comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

o7 thanks for the tutorial. I got a couple japanese subs I really want to try this on! I gotta see about the different wood shades tho as I only got the "natural wood" paint; but I'll come up with sth. Thanks again and hope you're doing well!
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
Thank you for your comment and for watching the video! You have the natural wood color. With that, you have the base for everything you need. You can add just a drop of white to lighten the shade, or brown to darken. My point is that you can achieve many different tones with just the base color and a darker or lighter color. Even just a tiny dip of red can change the wood tone. (Be careful with red) Anyway, play around with the technique and experiment with color. Most of all have fun as you learn the technique. I wish you the best of luck on your projects! Thanks again for watching!

Nice job. Is this 1/350 ship? And do you use aerobrush (and masking) for highlighting those planks, or the brush?
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 3 месяца назад
The ship in the video is 1/200 scale but the technique will work in almost any scale. Yes, I do use an airbrush but only to apply the first over all color. Everything else is done with a paint brush. No masking is required but a somewhat steady hand is helpful. The technique works best on recessed lines, which are easier to follow with a brush, but will work on raised lines as well. I developed this technique as I absolutely hate masking all those individual planks, that consumes too much time. This is so much easier IMO. Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

What size brush do you use to paint the random boards? Also do you use just one shade lighter and one shade darker than the base color or do you use a few shades lighter and darker?
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for the comment. The size brush I use would depend on the scale of the plank to be painted. I try to use a brush that is the same width as the plank. In the case of the Arizona, I believe I used a number "0" brush. I also will go a shade lighter and darker with paint. More subtle tones are achieved with pastel chalk. This, of course, is not a rule as any shade will work, It just depends on what the model builder wants to achieve. Experiment and have fun with the technique. Thanks for watching the video and best wishes!

There are several options you can use to find ship railings. Search 1/200 scale USS Arizona ship rails or just 1/200 scale ship railings. Either of these searches should link you to the product you are looking for. If you need another scale just simply type in 1/700 scale or 1/350 scale etc. There are several manufactures of photo etch railings and you should be able to find what you need. plastic deck, the wood deck tends to bubble up and lift off and if so you've had it
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment! Yes, I have heard that if the aftermarket wood deck can lift up over time. Builders that use those wood decks recommend gluing them down to prevent them from lifting in the future. I have never used the aftermarket decks so I do not have any practical experience with them. Thanks for watching the video and best wishes!

It looks nice and satisfying to the eye, but I never saw any actual ship's decking that wasn't all one color. The only time there was any deviation in pattern was when planking had been replaced. It's just insulating material from a military standpoint. I just pick a nice light wood color and use that, it's perfectly realistic from my experience.
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
It is simply the choice of the model builder. Planking effects vs. all one color. This video was made to illustrate one way of achieving the various shades on a plank wood deck, either on a ship or a semi trailer or whatever suits the builders fancy. Some want the effect but not the cost of expensive aftermarket wood decks. This video was meant to help those modelers achieve their goals. Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

@sheogorath979 Год назад
There's is just not two single planks that are the exact same color, even if it's similar each tree goes through different environmental situations that alter their wood color ever so slightly, maybe toning down the effects a little bit would be more realistic, but it looks awesome like that

Hi Monte. Beautiful work! Question for you ... are you hand painting or masking and using an airbrush? Thanks.
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
The overall color for the deck is painted with an airbrush. Once the base color is applied it is all hand painting and absolutely no masking. A steady hand helps but is not essential for this technique. Masking is always an option if desired but I prefer to hand paint. Just make sure that the paint is not too thick on the brush. You are looking to simply change the shade so a thin coat works well. The pastels will also help by just slightly changing the shade. Thank you for the comment and for watching the video. Best wishes!

Hi Monte what paints can I use if I am unable to find any enamel paints for my Arizona kit especially the navy blue
@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
That is a good question and one that I am happy to help with. I use all acrylic paint on my models. The only enamels I ever use are silver or other metallic colors. These colors have never really worked well for me in acrylic. My choice of paint is "Model Color" by Vallejo. They come in a squeezable bottle and are very user friendly to me. As for as the Navy Blue color, there are several dark blue colors offered by Model Color. The color I used on my model of the USS Arizona was mixed. The color you want will be up to you. The neat thing about acrylic paint is they do not have hazardous vapors like enamels and mixing is relatively easy with water or acrylic thinner. I have used both and find that bottled drinking water works fine for everything I do with acrylic paints. I would share my mixing colors and proportions with you that I used on the hull but I really have no idea of the percentages I used. I just started mixing until I got the color I wanted. This is getting too long so I will stop here. If you have any additional questions I will be happy to help as best as I can. Best wishes!

@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 2 года назад
As long as the deck has planking inscribed, it should work. (Or raised lines, etc.) The smallest scale I have used this on is 1/350. I have never done a 1/700 scale ship deck. The process should work, just on a much smaller area to deal with. Please let me know how it turns out if you use my technique. Thank you for your comments and for watching my video. Best wishes!

Great video, and l will give it a shot, although I know my limitations, and will be astounded if I can pull it off. The nice thing here is you only have to try a very small area and if you don’t like the results, try something else or just buy a wood deck.

@modelsbymonte2431
@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
First off, thanks for watching the video and for leaving a comment. The woodgrain you see is not my doing. The woodgrain detail is raised detail molded on the plastic deck. The woodgrain is enhanced by dry-brushing the deck after painting. I have hand painted some small woodgrain details using a number 0 paint brush. My video on the 1/25 scale Peterbilt 359 has an example of a hand painted dashboard. Thanks again for your comment and for watching. Best wishes!

Great video mate. You have got my sub. Love your USS Arizona build I just bought the 1/350 Eduard USS Arizona kit for a very reasonable price. Can I ask what colour you used for all the Blue Grey hull and superstructure? I am led to believe that the colours called in the Eduard kit instructions are wrong, and that the dark Blue Grey they show, is too dark?

@modelsbymonte2431 Год назад
Thanks for watching this video and for the comments. I actually mixed the color I used for the USS Arizona. I agree with you that some of the paint schemes seem too blue to me. I used "Model Color" paints by Vallejo. I started off with basic gray and added a small amount of blue until it "looked right" to me. I also vary the shades on different structures. The entire model is not the same color. I am assuming you have watched my videos on the USS Arizona build. Thanks again for your comment and good luck on your Arizona build! Best wishes!

@@Andy.Gledhill.Models. I decided to just try and match the color on the box art and other color references. I admit I used a lot of poetic license when deciding on the color to utilize. There are those that will say the color is wrong, or something. This issue has been ongoing for decades. To me, model building is an expression of art as much as a detailed representation of a subject. In the end, the only person you need to impress is yourself. I believe, based on the amount of research you appear to be doing, you will have an excellent model of the USS Arizona. I hope you post of some pictures of your model. outstanding work, and you achieved your goal which was to hope someone found this video and helpful, yes , very much indeed sir, your applications is excellent and helpful, however my stuff , ships and tanks, planes, little bit of everything but ships have always been my interest because i am a navy brat, my father would today be 86, died in 2011, a 30 year us navy retired chief senior petty officer began as a sailor first class many stories later , but my sizes are tiny, im building 1/700 destroyers my father served on through his career and service which included 3 destroyers, a tin can sailor, but i build them for family members and friends, he also served on a swift boat in vietnam , serving 4 tours in vietnam, and his first tour was end of korea war on the uss cook apd130 , however i am am working on a 1/350 arizona , but you want to know whats really a bitch for me is ?, its signal flags, us flags and hull numbers and rigging, anchors and painting, hell building the thing, i have a musashi 1/350 and a uss NC modernized with photo etch upgrade which i dont have much experience with , i attempted one of the 1/700 destroyers i have built over the years to do PE railings. ladders or steps and radar and well a bunch of stuff, it turned out too look like a submarine when i used the wrong primer that was so thick it clogged up all the damn portholes , windows and any hole, railings,i may have drilled . all became full of primer, thick chalky crap, but what im making is a model not really a diorama but more of a display with 3 different class destroyers he served on in a plexiglass rectangle case with a top, make a bottom or sea to set the very small ships and glue them to the fabricated sea and ocean base, or a calm port , put a photograph he may have taken when he served that i have saved over the years, make a background tape it on and all 3 will fill it nicely, the swiftboat is much larger, maybe 1/72 ? but i fabricated the stuff inside and on the deck, ie canvas baggs, tire bumpers, rope, but i have only 2 of those ever built, it keeps me busy, painting i enjoy, especially weathering, i did a tank and had to make impact poles, dents or dings, wood decks i am just doing and your video is excellent in every manner and i am sure i speak for the whole modeling community in expressing gratitude

WOW! First off I appreciate your fathers service. My dad was Navy too and served in WWII on a Benson class destroyer. I have never built a 1/700 scale ship so I really do not have much advise to share on this scale. This deck technique should work on the 1/350 scale USS Arizona. Flags are tricky to get to look real. I have seen flags placed on models that are completely flat and they really do not look right to me. I always use paper flags. I apply white glue to the inside of the paper and fold it over. While the glue is still soft I fold the flag to appear that it is blowing in the wind. When it dries it holds its shape and looks natural on the model. Best of luck on your projects and thank you for watching my video and for your comment. Best wishes!
