Hello Karen; Thank you for an excellent tutorial showing how to paint wet in wet plus how to colour mix. Never thought of using payne’s grey and yellow for green, I will add this to my collection as I am going through the colour spectrum practising mixing all my own colours and creating greens is one of my favourites. I like that you do not sketch but use your brush instead, this is a much better way to create watercolour as I find using a sketch is a little like ‘colouring in’. I too have learnt to use twigs, amazing how this free’s up the creative process. You have a wonderful channel, thank you so much for sharing your invaluable skills. Happy Painting 🎨🌈
I am a nurse and started painting again about a month ago to try to alleviate some stress from this covid thing. I was never really good at watercolor because I didnt understand the fluidity of watercolor. Now I am truly a lover. I finally get it and have put away the acrylic paints for now. I love, love, love your tutorial on poppies. I actually grow poppies and have taken a load of photos. Now to paint them. You are amazingly gifted and such a great teacher. Thank you very much for sharing your talent with the world.
Thank you so much and for your lovely comment! So pleased that my tutorials have helped you understand about the fluidity of water colour. You are very kind to say that I am gifted, bless you! I hope you continue loving the painting in watercolour! Take care, happy painting :-)
My father has recently got back into watercolour painting and watches many of your videos. I caught this one while visiting him recently. It inspired me to dig out an old watercolour set from 25 years ago. The tubes had dried up but I carefully cut them open and emptied the dried paint into an old ice cube tray. They only needed a little drop of water to revitalise them. I followed your tutorial and I'm very happy with the results. Thank you for taking the time to make them.
So pleased that both you and your father are inspired by my watercolour tutorials. I love your tip about the dried up tubes! Great idea to put them in the ice cube tray!! Thank you for sharing! 😀
Like Deanna Munro below I am coming to art late in life too and I am 68! Have been digital drawing for a while but not very good. But I am doing digital painting in water colour style now. I did some loose poppies then came across your video...is RU-vid psychic! Learnt a lot from you about building up. Digital is very forgiving...make a mistake, just rub it out. If you work in layers like i do, it is even easier. Love your voice by the way. Very soothing and just the right amount of talking.
Thank you so much for your comment I am so glad that you are painting at 68! How wonderful! I’m so delighted that you are finding the digital work easier with the watercolour especially with the layering! Thank you for your comment about my voice, so glad that you find it soothing! Take care, happy painting :-)
Oh my gosh - this is lovely. It is on my tomorrow's "to do" list! I am just beginning to paint - at 69 it is such a gift and this is definately the best. Thank you, thank you!
Deanna, thank you! Love the fact that one of my paintings is on your "to do" list! Painting is such a gift and I am so glad you have found it and love it! :)
Hi Deanna, similar shoes in terms of coming to painting at a more mature age! I am 67 and started this year with some acrylics, now I want to learn more about watercolours! So much joy and frustration and joy again! All the best to your endeavours!
I just tried this one today in quarantine. Thank you so much for the tutorial---I really enjoyed working through it! Going to give my painting to my mother for her birthday in May.
Wonderful! Thank you Jenny for your lovely comment! So glad the painting worked out well. I am sure your mother will love it for her birthday. Take care :-)
Hi Karen watch you all the time, I've painted for years. Love you stuff. Have you seen Paul Clark? He is from the UK too. He loves splatts as much as you ....I really like his work also. Check him out , I told him about you. Thanks .......Merv BC..........Canada
Thank you so much Merv in Canada! So pleased you like the tutorials. Yes I have seen Paul's amazing work! Us Brits love to spatter! Take care, happy painting :)
I found your site quite by accident and love your work. I really appreciate your explanations because I am new at watercolor and want to learn. Thanks for your channel!
Hi Linda, I am so glad you found me by accident! So pleased you like my videos, watercolour is all about practice! The more you do the more confident you will become :)
I loved this tutorial as I love flowers, especially poppies, and for a beginner my painting turned out pretty good (I really surprised myself!), thank you Karen, you really do inspire me to keep practising
Thank you so much Jan and well done you for having a go at the poppies! So pleased it turned out well and that you surprised yourself! The secret to watercolour is practice...I used to say to my students to paint a sky a day! So may techniques in skies! Have fun! Happy painting :)
wow, this was actually easy to follow along with and mine turned pretty much the same as yours. The instructions were great as well. Thank you so much.
I love your artwork. I have never really painted other than finger painting as a young child. I personally only really draw with pencils. I overthink things a lot and I think it makes me feel intimidated by other medium. I always think "I don't know what brushes to use for what, how to mix colors... I could go on. I only say all this to say how much I love how well you describe and explain everything. It helps me a lot to not overthink things and feel much more comfortable leaving my sketch pencil lined comfort zone.
Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing your experience of painting and drawing. It can be very daunting to know what brushes what colours to use in watercolour or any painting for that matter. I would start with baby steps one brush one colour one small piece of paper! Take your time, don't be hard on yourself and enjoy it! Happy painting :-)
Hi, I painted it and it looks pretty good. Take good care. I thank you so much, I am happy that I subscribed and I got your reply and I was able to find your class!!
Thank you for your comment and for sharing. Also thank you for subscribing! So glad that you liked this video and that it inspired you to have a go… And that it turned out pretty good! Happy painting :-)
Hi Karen I follow all your tutorials and have learnt so much . I am obsessed with your poppy tutorials ! Do you allow people to sell their work which is based on your tutorials which may come out very similar ? but of course I have not got your talent Just wondering 😊
Thanks for your question; You can sell your work that you create from my tutorials but I would be grateful if you would credit me on the back of the painting and my RU-vid channel if you post your painting on social media. Good luck 😊
Absolutely lovely poppies!! It was so relaxing to watch you paint this piece. I love the look when you remove the masking and there's that crisp white border. Beautiful!
Thank you for your questions Rashmi... Some papers dry very quickly and you need to wet several times to make sure the paper absorbs the water. Don't paint on when the paper is too wet (I find tilting to make sure there are not puddles), wait for the water to absorb into the paper. I often use Saunders Waterford 300gms paper Not/rough surface because it doesn't dry out to quickly. Hope this was helpful? :)
Just painted this as my first watercolor painting! I have been really loving your videos. Thank you so much for being a lovely teacher with cool techniques!
I'm trying tonight to paint for my very first time watercolor poppies. Let's see how it comes out. I'm doing my best. Thank you for this video. 🙂❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great question Rose! Opera Rose is probably the least lightfast paint and I don't believe adding another pigment will change that fact. Framing your art behind conservation glass offering UV protection and not hanging your painting in direct sunlight can slow any fading. Hope this was helpful :)
That was really wonderful; you have a superb technique and a terrific loose hand. Hugely inspiring. I'll be watching this a good few times more as it's an absolute feast. I have liked and subscribed. 🇬🇧
Hi Karen.....new to watercolours. Thank you so much. I've really enjoyed your tutorial. You're very good at explaining everything. I can't believe I've painted a poppy field. I'm very happy with the painting and will look forward to giving it another go. I didn't think I had a painting in me 😄🖌️🎨. Thanks again, God bless
Lovely video. I've never really painted flowers, and when I try, they always look so tight and strict. I followed this, tried it, and what a revelation - I really enjoyed the experience, and ended up with the best flowers I've ever painted. Thank you so much.
Hi Karen please excuse my ignorance but I am totally new to this. Did you wet your paper to stretch it before taping it to the board? I know you did wet it before painting but do we wet first then dry it. Thank you.
Thank you for your question Linda, I don't often stretch my paper. I am using framing tape, not gummed tape. The paper is 300gms, so doesn't need to be stretched as it's only 9 x 12 inches, so tends not to buckle. Hope this was helpful :)
Thanks for this. Helping to get over my fear of watercolour painting flowers. First attempt I went in too soon with the green buds and stem painting and they bled. All a learning path. Going in again soon!
Thank you so much for your comment Jayne, painting is really helping me as well in these isolation days! So glad it’s helping you also and these videos… Take care, happy painting :-)
Thanks Karen but the link you gave me to iTunes was not accessible - so I have applied to PayPal to check my account and see where the digital download is going because they have certainly been paying out my monthly Payment to you. I hope They can solve this issue as I would be very reluctant to cancel my subscription - just enjoy your lessons so much. Fingers crossed Wendy List
Hi Karen .. joined as a member last month but unfortunately I have been unable to watch any of the members only posts as I receive a message to say ‘this post is no longer available’. I have tried on my computer, both my iPads and my iPhone with no results. I would be grateful if you could let me know what is happening to make posts these unavailable to me - I am a great fan thanks Wendy List
Thank you Wendy for your question, sorry you are having trouble with your channel membership. I’m so pleased that you like the channel and were enjoying the membership benefits. I can’t find you on my membership list ? possibly your membership has finished for the month? Look forward to hearing from you to get this sorted. Take care :-)
I tried the painting above, and of course I can't keep up, so I try stopping and then continuing. That's hard. Can I get a copy of the finished painting for reference as I go? I can't figure out how to copy it. I am a member as of today.
Thank you for your comment Nancy and for joining the Patreon membership, so pleased you are having a go at this painting. I started Patreon July 1st. Patreon members have access to a downloadable documents/photos (from videos I published from 16 July 2020) which will include a rough outline drawing for the painting, a list of materials, a reference photo if applicable and a photo of my finished painting. Unfortunately I published this video in 2019, so this is not available on Patreon.
I loved this tutorial. Thank you! Both my husband and best friend said how great my painting was (their words, not mine, lol) and they've seen a lot of paintings I've done. Your tutorials are simple and easy to follow. Thank you.
Hi Karen. I'm glad to find your very kind instruction videos. One question. In this video, you've made basic colors on the palette for the background, petals and greens before starting to paint. It seems you are not always doing so, but do you think it better for a beginner?
Thank you Karen. I painted your poppies and loved your quick, swift and beautiful tutorial and painting.I guess I don't have too much patience for anything too long and yours was just right🌹
Have always painted with acrylics. So now at 64 I want to try watercolor and am going to try your poppies. I love the look! Thank you so much for posting for us beginners.
Gorgeous painting! I am just starting to paint and I am 63 years old. I have been painting with acrylics but I really love the look of watercolors. I will purchase some watercolor paper and paints to try this. You make it so simple but I am sure it is not. I will definitely be practicing with you. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise.
I had great fun doing these Karen, and used a reference photo of my own ( to convince myself it wasn't copying). It turned out pretty decent. Again, I learned the importance of the amount water and also thick, saturated pigment for contrast. Very valuable. Thank you.
That's wonderful Barbara, I am delighted that you found the tutorial useful especially about the water and pigment ratio. I found using a photo useful, but end up creating my own individual work: So glad you liked your result, more importantly! Happy Painting - Thank you for watching :)
Thank you for this great tutorial! I decided to paint it today on Remembrance Day and was fairly pleased with my results. I will do more of your tutorials.
J'adore vos aquarelles.
A quick question, should you have time to respond. When squeezings of watercolour from a tube harden on a palette, they seem to reconstitute with the addition of water, rather as if they were pans rather than mere blobs. Do they deteriorate in terms of use? And I am keeping busy, when I can, going through your presentations.
Thank you for your question and for joining the channel membership. I have found that tube paint is fine to reuse again, after it hardens. However after a very long period of time (well over a year), it tends to crumble and deteriorate in the palette (depends on environmental factors as well) . Hope this is helpful :-)
Hi Lynnae, thank you for your comment and question. I tape the paper down on the block while I am painting. Hope that answers your question? Happy painting :-)
Hello Karen. My name is Lena-Erica from Sweden and I am new member from today. Love your tutorials. Though I am quite new to watercolor painting. My project is to try to paint your wounderful poppy field. Feel good❤
I usually paint in watercolors, mainly technical motifs such as locomotives and buildings. I don't usually need these creative techniques. Now I've painted a Mother's Day picture and I'm surprised at how well these tricks produce a decent result. Many thanks for the suggestions.
I want to try these poppies. I'm relatively new to watercolor. I have some Arches hot pressed paper I can use. Do I need to stretch it first? I have never used hot pressed paper. Thank you.
I've recently decided to teach myself watercolours and your tutorials are wonderful inspirations. At 80 years old the brain needs more than a little help. My first attempt was your painting of clover. It was such fun to do and I am so proud of my results. So thank you so much for sharing your work. You have got this old lady excited and these beautiful poppies are my next challenge.
