Nice I gotta try that old rust fantastic tip. Dry brushing space marines is a great method, saves time and in my opinion looks a lot better as it shows the armour has seen some action, use it for my own chapter (Kantor Dry brush Alaitoc - Nuln oil - then Fenrisian drubrush)

Really like this. I'd prefer a little more brightness on the flashy parts of my Raven Guard (company trim, weapon casing and decorative bits), but this looks like it would take less than half the time per model my current edge highlighting approach takes... May do a test model following this guide and add a few brighter colours before the weathering powder to see how it looks. 4th company represent!
@SprayBlackStudios

Massive problem with the gw style.. although it's crisp and not a line out of place even on a macro level.. it's just too cartoonish. A space marine in the 40k universe should be that crisp once.. the minute they walk out of the factory. The rest of their time should be covered in dust, grime and battle damage. I can't even drive my truck to the end of the street without it needing cleaning and these super soldiers from gw look like they are spit shined.. get some grimdark on them! Love it! Thanks for the vid will help me a lot with getting my raven guard up to spec.
@SprayBlackStudios

I completely agree! GW style has it's place but I love a bit of immersion and I just don't get that with models that look like they have just stepped out of the factory as you say!

How do you clean up mistakes on the black armor? I want to try this method but not always the cleanest painter and it seems like it would be very challenging to fix any mistakes if I accidentally get any of the other colors onto the black.
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 года назад
It definitely can be challenging to correct mistakes but I would keep handy something like Corax black (slightly lighter than Abaddon black) and apply with very thin coats, almost like a glaze. This can cover up any major mistakes it'll just take some time.

@keithcarter5468

Do you add a final coat of clear acrylic spray for protection or will the white spirits act as a protective coating ??
@SprayBlackStudios

The white spirit won't act as a protective coat I'm afraid, I fully recommend a layer of an acrylic varnish to protect your miniature at the end.

I know they're more black marines but I wanna see your take on the Deathwatch with your style, I think it could be cool with the large amount of metallics they have, plus all the other DW tutorials are just Eavy Metal style, or don't have the production value your videos have.

What brushes do you use, particularly when you were doing the weathering? Seems like they hold a lot of paint but keep a point nicely
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 3 года назад
Hey Elliot, I use a range of brushes, for most of my painting I use Broken Toad Mkiii brushes but for the majority of weathering I just use some of the citadel synthetic brushes! The key is looking after them properly, making sure they are cleaned well etc.
@DataMineNo69

Think you could do a Grimdark craftworld eldar?? No one ever does the pointy ears, its always space marines. Btw I noticed you get some bubbles in the paint cup when using your airbrush. Is that normal as I also get some bubble when I use mine. I thought it was due to some blockage, but im very vigilante when it comes to cleaning. Thanks in advance and great video. :D
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 3 года назад
Oh I could definitely Grimdark up a Craftworld Eldar! Sadly Space Marines get the views and are always popular which is why people gravitate to them. I am liking the Eldar challenge though! Bubbles does generally mean you do have a small blockage and are getting some air leakage, I'm normally pretty good on the cleaning but I'll admit that sometimes I get carried away and forget!

@SprayBlackStudios

Hi Takeo, it depends a little on how strong an effect you are going for but realistically at least 2 or 3 coats of Nuln Oil. As for the Dawnstone it's entirely up to you, personally I tend to use the Layer more often than not but the dry one is easier to drybrush.

How would you paint a raven guard vehicle in this manner?
@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 2 года назад
To be honest for vehicles I would likely use a slightly different technique. I would likely start with the black and then just use the drybrush to pick out edges etc. It would be very difficult to get an even finish with the washes on the large flat panels of Space Marine vehicles

Hey Jake, sorry about the delay! This technique will work for videos although if I am honest not quite as well as on infantry as it doesn't work quite so well on the big surfaces. I am currently doing some trials into a similar effect using the new Black Legion contrast paint through and airbrush to avoid the pooling but not quite got it right yet.

@SprayBlackStudios
@SprayBlackStudios 3 года назад
Hey, I've tried using the Black Templar but I find it's a bit too thick. It will do the same job but in applying one thick coat I find you get a bit less control. Personally I'd rather take the time to build the effect up slowly rather than rushing it 👍
