A couple suggestions from a lifelong artist: Tape: Painters tape is great, but you can also put the tape strip on your jeans - this gets additional fibers on it and make it less sticky. Paint: If using acrylic paint, dry brush it on - put very little on your foam brush and use a dry paper towel to brush off the excess. It should be like using a dried out market. This will prevent the pages from warping and paint bleeding inside. It'll also be easier to pull apart. But instead of paint, try using a dry or semi-dry pigment. Galaxy: you're using a flat brush - instead try a rounded brush (kind of shaped like a makeup powder brush) and alternate between a stippling motion and a swirl motion. For the stars, thin down white paint to heavy cream consistency and use an old toothbrush to flick the paint. (Dip the bristles in paint, then flick your finger across the bristles towards the canvas). Practice first!
@@cyana5867 Worth a try! I'd suggest covering the rest of your book fully to prevent overspray. Spray a few *very* light coats - slow build up of the color will make the paint less thick and be less harsh on the paper. The main thing I'd worry about it that most spray paints are a powder coating, so it might need a light coat of matte sealer after spraying color. The second concern would be the pages sticking together. Maybe try it on a book you don't like as much first. There may also be some RU-vid tutorials for doing this with spray paint - I haven't done this in this way before, these are just my guesses based on what I know about the medium. :) Good luck!
@@nanamuskuri6630 Yep, you'd want to dust it very lightly with a couple coats of matte sealer to lock in the pigment. Too thick and the pages will stick together, so a couple thin coats to build up the sealer and make sure it doesn't get onto fingers. (Again, never done this, just using my knowledge of artistic materials to apply a best guess to doing this project.)
May I ask how can you do to make sure you are not using toxic paintings? I mean sometimes when you pass pages people tend to lick their fingers to turn them and I am worried about what kind of paint to use to be sure they are not toxic.
You should try spray paint! I saw someone on RU-vid do it and followed how she did it (can link if you want), and it works so so well! It’s so fast, dries super fast, and the pages do not stick together at all! I’ve done 5 books.
Has anyone ever told you that your energy is so delightful and contagious that it almost hurts? :D I dont even read romancebooks anymore, but I stay subscribed to your channel because I'm always in a better mood after watching one of your videos! Just wanted to tell you that!
The yellow frog tape works best in my opinion. It has a very low tack, so it's not super sticky. I've painted 20+ books now and the tape hasn't torn anything at this point. I tried using acrylic paint First and I did the galaxy. And my pages tried to stick and a few tried to tear like that. And I did not enjoy pulling them apart individually... So after a little further research I moved on to spray paint. (The kind in the cans.) And have not regretted it yet. :) I was a little worried before I tried it, but the trick is just to not get too close to the book while spraying. 4-6 inches is fine. So, in my opinion, spray paint is the best way to go, less hassle and it looks and feels great. And the pages do not really stick. Just one big flip through and your good. (The Metallic colors are always my personal favorite. I've been looking for the glitter spray paint to try, but haven't had much luck with that yet.) However using the acrylic was probably the most fun way to go about it. Lol This is just my opinion and my favorite process for going about it, after watching lots of awesome videos like yours, so thank you for the inspiration. :)
From someone who paints- So if you want to try doing the galaxy again I highly recommend sponging on the blue and pink and then the stars would have possibly worked better with a splatter brush
I am spray painting them, with montana sprays and a six pack of water bottles on top, ofc with added tape on the covers and other places 😁 and where I leave it’s a bit less than 5 dollars a bottle of spray paint ☺️
Hello! I just found your channel when searching for how to paint the edges of my books. Thank you for this video. I also sew and love your fox fabric, I have quite a few different fox fabric that I'm going to make some shirts for my daughter.
Thank you for this tutorial! I'd try to remove a little of the tape's stickiness first then place them.on my books. I'm afraid of damaging my books, lol.
Thanks. Enjoyed the video:) I saw a video where she used talcum powder, or baking soda rubbed into the edge before painting to keep the pages from sticking.
What about using saran wrap to cover the outside of the books? Also, an airbrush does not stich the pages together but will still color the page edges.
So cute!!! I’m probably going to do this now. I’m more of a drawing and painting person than a crafty person haha. Are you planning on doing anymore books and if so will you post more videos about them?
I'm too scared to paint the edges of my books, but I have "defaced" hardbacks before. I just sketched out what design I wanted, and then used jelly roll pens and acrylic paint. So far I've only done my ACOTAR and Cruel Prince series. Sarah J. Maas loved my defaced copies so that was cool.
Jesus Gonzalez I think you could do it but i would get a big sheet of construction paper to over the outside and just tape it down then paint the edges
Yes, it can be done. You've just gotta be a bit more careful with it. I spray painted mine at that point, bc I'd moved on from the acrylic. But Yes it can still be done.
Cool... I've been surveying different methods. People who take the cover off and do lay conservator work like renewing spine glue etc. use (for solid color) archival ink... they squish the text block sideways a little (like just fanning it a tiny, tiny bit) and rub the ink on with a pad, then squish-fan the other way and repeat. But it will only do so much artistically, so I like lookin at different stuff. I want to disguise un-removable stains I know are nothing gross but need covering.
I am wanting to do this myself but i heard somewhere that acrylic paints will chip off and that I should do watercolors for it to last. Have you had any issues with this since you painted them?
You can significantly reduce page sticking by brushing on a small amount of talc along the edge and rubbing it in with your finger. You want the talc to coat the inside edges of the pages, but not the edge you are painting, which is why you rub it vigorously with your finger.
Thank you for the tutorial video and also your feedback about what went well and what wasn't that good.. I really like the end results. I watched a few videos and quite a few people sanding the edges before painting it.. Can that help the white fluff?
I honestly can’t even stay in the line when I color so I want to try it on some of my books with the silver but for the book sake I think it’s best if I don’t lol 😂
My problem is I don’t know what colors look best! I have a dark brown leather bound book. I thought about painting the edges red, but I am unsure and the uncertainty makes me not want to even try!
When it comes to the US publishers have no imagination when designing their books. I have a feeling that they'll be run out of business when readers want the prettier books.
Saw a tutorial where the girl said dont use tape and she just wrapped the book cover in paper and taped the paper to itself so you could just slip the paper on and off like a cover. Heres the link to anyone that wants to blend the 2 methods. tho i know this video is SUPER old lolll ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SjjVQt0Dlis.html
