I love painting old stone in oils - and so will you! Learn how to paint this stone bridge from a basic underpainting to a finished work of art. And the secret ... it's not as hard as it looks!
First I'll show you how to compose a black-and-white underpainting in acrylics. Then using the Bob Ross oil painting technique we'll transform it into the finished painting you see on screen. I've included all the stages and highlighted the points where you need to take care with your own painting. And, as usual, I've included my own happy accidents and fixes. But there weren't many so this is a dream for a beginner to try.

Serene, tranquil and gorgeous (as usual); I of course always enjoy your authentic instruction and narration, but this one has the wonderful bonus of the ogre tale, and you holding back the chuckling whilst telling the story, along with your ogre face expressions. Hi Paul! An ogre you are not, showing us a refreshing view of a fairytale world! Lovely in color, with a perfect mood to introduce springtime vibes! I’m inspired to go back to my box of our children’s favorite story books for some painting ideas. You’re very lucky to live in such a beautiful country with lush gardens and countryside filled with folklore and history! Your painting is beautiful and encourages me to explore more scenery for landscapes. I’m working on a project for spring including an ancient southeastern North Carolina oak tree sprawling out her arms over a gorgeous azalea garden. One challenge is Spanish moss over her branches. The bridge in your painting taught me some great top tips and I know how to make it pop. The moss is a great addition and it gives a great fairytale mood. The moss in my tree gives the same effect. I absolutely love how you’re teaching the gesso underpainting! It really makes everything come together so well. Thank you Paul, your tutorial is really fantastic! Happy spring!!

Hi Stephanie 🥰 - yes we are blessed to be in England's green and pleasant land ( ref William Blake poem - Jerusalem ) Our country is crisscrossed with historical monuments at every turn. From 12th-century churches to prehistoric stone circles. The oak tree project sounds wonderful. I often fancy just doing studies of trees etc for my own pleasure. Spanish moss is something we don't see here in the UK. But it looks like trees all dressed up for Halloween. Lots more paintings to do so I hope to 'see you soon' - Have a great week - Paul 😃😍😎

@@PaulRansonArt - Hi Paul, this is actually going to be the very first painting that I try. Not sure if it's because I flat love this type of scenery in actual life, or the fact that you made it look relatively easy to paint - (haha). I remember some Bob Ross’ videos on TV in my childhood. Then the internet and it’s like he made those videos for RU-vid and they’ve become the standard for presenting the act of painting as an adventure. Did he use reference photo’s? I see he looks beyond the canvas sometimes and thought he’d painted the scene before. Very enjoyable vid 👍
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 27 дней назад
Hi Paul - yes, indeed painting is an adventure. Bob used reference photographs - many being sent in by his viewers. He occasionally thanked foks when he used one. I was lucky to have had many of Bob's first teacher trainers for my certification courses. They told first-hand how Bob worked and they trained together. In the film studio, Bob had a monitor just off-screen where he could see what the cameras were looking at. He occasionally gave the camera person a cue by saying 'Let's look up close at this .. detail' and would look at the monitor to make sure they had a good shot and he might adjust his palette to get the detail. Just below the monitor someone would sit and give Bob hand signals as to how long he had to go for the tape. He shot in one take and rarely missed his timing. When asked how many times he practised a painting he replied 'hundreds of times ... mostly in my head' A true master of the art of presenting and a wonderful guy. Happy painting - Paul 😃😎

Hi Jane - pleased you enjoyed the video. Using acrylic as an underpainting is an easy way to get the composition onto the canvas. I could use oils for this as well but then there's the drying time for it to tack up. Plus if you want to change the underpainting its a short wait until its dry and can be over painted. Using underpaintings has been around for centuries but not always in shades of grey ( also known as grisaille or grey painting ). I sometimes use sienna or brown tones. - Hope this helps. I'll be dropping a new video on the channel this Sunday 6.00pm UK time so hope to see you soon - Paul 😃😍😎

Hi Phill - yes Dorset is my spiritual home even though I wasn't born there. I spent all my summer holidays running wild along the beach at sandbanks - long before it turned into the playground of the rich and famous. I paint on a home made paper canvas which isn't archival - although they have lasted years and years. I've got an Etsy shop but I need to change it to worldwide availability as its currently set up for the US market ( rookie mistake by me! ) In short I don't sell my originals. @PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 24 дня назад
Hi Anne - welcome aboard my little art channel. Yes is the answer. Most things I paint can be adapted to work with acrylics. The only things you might find more challenging is blending skies. Here the oils slow drying time and the liquid white or clear help. So do your best with what ever you have to hand. Maybe in time someone will visit and bring you some supplies. The liquid white or clear are products peculiar to Bob Ross. But you can use a tiny amount of linseed oil as a substitute. Just remember once you apply oils you cant apply acrylics - they just don't stick! happy Painting and hope to see you again soon. _ Paul 😃😃😍😍😎😎
@PaulRansonArt
@PaulRansonArt 24 дня назад
Hi Anne - I just dropped a reply but YT appear to have dropped the ball - Well yes you can adapt most of my paintings to be acrylics only. The only challenge will be blending skies amd water. Oils slow drying really help here. But you can adapt and do just as well with a little practice. Now, the Bob Ross Liquid White and Clear are oils particular to the Bob Ross brand. If you do get some oils you can use a tiny drop of linseed oil to replace the clear and add a dab of white for liquid white. Hopefully in time you'll get some oils. Look forward to seeing you soon for some more painting tutorials - Paul 😃😍😎

Hi Catie - do you mean my Mahl stick? The piece of wood I rest my hand on? Its just a piece of 3/4 inch wood with an old 'L' bracket screwed on to the end of it. I bound it with some tape for a little extra grip and wound an elestic band round it. My old one was made from a garden cane and the hook from a coat hanger bound on with a few cable ties. This cost pennies to make and lasted ages ( till I trod on it 😥😥) I've seen folk using old walking sticks in the past. Basicall anything you can hook over the end of the canvas will work.
