Omg!!! Thank you!! I have used everything and my paint just kept peeling right off. Your video needs to be number one. Thank you again. You saved me over$200.00 dollars. Because I was just about to buy different ones. And it still would not have made difference. #1 Video
This was SO helpful!! My ex did shutters that were not paintable. I bought new ones, but want to make sure the job is done correctly. I wouldn't have done primer without watching this. Thank you so much!!
Been a painter for over 30 years your conclusion for oil primer was spot on and between spray or brush both will work but I would put 2 thin coats on either method also looked like an hvlp sprayer you used if you had an airless thinning would not be required. Side note emulsa bond works great for addhearing to slippery/glossy surfaces like vinyl siding/shutters. If I wanted to I could cover those shutters in 1 coat with a brush it's just a pain you have to keep your brush at the right angle every stroke as to not peal off paint but float it and it takes much longer. They look great tho your hired.
Great video! You saved our day! Was under the impression these were paintable shutters and thanks to you, we found the kilz products at home depot and the shutters look great! You saved us a whole lot of pain. Thanks again for sharing!
Thank you for sharing! I tried the process and it worked!! I did the scratch test and the paint didn't come off. Now off to do all of them. We will have beautiful solid colored shutters again not aged and weathered ones.
Chris/ John I’ll be following suit this weekend👍🏽 Thanks for the vid, comparison oil vs water based, brush vs sprayer Chris, especially the tip on the rattle can primer🙌🏽
Thanks for the video. I am painting a door and shutters today! I thought about just buying new shutters but they are costly. I love spray Kilz too. its absolutely the best!!!
Thanks for your horn relay video and converting from generator to alternator. Really made it easy. Good to point out details when painting those shutters.
Chris- Finding your video blew me away. I am repainting my 20 year old plastic shutters, exact size and manufacturer as yours, and using the same color/paint manufacturer as yours! The existing shutters were previously painted and were just cleaned and repainted. However I'm adding 4 new ones and I knew I needed to do more than just paint them. This video has saved me HOURS of experimentation. Only difference is I use a HVLP gun with a large tip for latex paints. Really spits out a lot of lightly thinned paint. Believe it or not... I will also be painting our front door the same color. Very well made video, thanks.
@@chriscraft77022 I've looked and looked (now two years after your video) and cannot find the interior/exterior form of the Kilz aeresol primer - no place I've looked seems to have it in stock. So I'm glad to see that you had success even with the interior primer. I CAN find that.
Turned out great Chris. I have some shutters on my house that are faded. I have been trying to decide if I should paint or replace them. Thanks for the vid.
I put the oil based Kilz in a spray can on my Christmas tree because I wanted the "snowy" effect. You have to leave it outside for a week or you'll have a Kilz migraine. That's the only way I'll flock a flocking tree it ain't coming off. It just stinks so flocking bad.
Dude go to you local Habitat for Huminty and purchase you shutter for maddd cheap, this weekend both my wife and I purchase 8 shutters in total for only $38.00 compare to our local home depot and Lowes.
This was a great video. I suck at painting but have some paint projects I'm working on now. They're all going badly. Was trying to paint some book shelves with that fake wood stuff. Textured like your shutters here. I bought an expensive primer that "sticks to anything". That did not work at all for me. It was peeling easily like your first tests no matter how long I waited. Needs to be able to take books going in and out. Today I tried to paint some closet doors that look like your shutters here, but made of real wood. Used a brush. Well that was a mistake. Looks so bad. I hope the second coat with a spray paint will save it somewhat. But you did a great job with your project. Yeah on the video I can't tell them apart. I know cameras can't capture stuff like it is in real life.
Latex semi gloss works great with a brush. Make sure shutters are clean and dry. Dish soap works fine with hot water. Also cheap oil based spray paint works fine as well. Home Depot brand. Or any spray paint. You don't need fancy spray paint equipment.
How many shutters are you painting? How many cans will it take per pair of shutters? Many shutters could end up costing a significant amount in spray cans.
Wash with 30 Second Mold & Mildew Cleaner. Prime with SMART PRIME by Zinsser Rust-o-leum to brush on (or) spray. Unless you just buy PPG Pitt-Tech and apply 2 coats. California ALFLOR also another good direct vinyl acrylic paint choice 2 coats. As for spray options, Krylon Fusion is a quality top coat direct to plastic / vinyl product @ around $5 a can.
Hi! Love your video..hows the paint holding? Im going to try and change a white hand railing to a warm brown for my deck. Gonna follow your suggestions.
Good video but to me it is too much headache brushing or pressure spraying the paint. I used the Rust-Oleum Universal Satin Black Spray Paint and Primer In One. The can is about $9 and I pained the face of two windows shuuters and still /2 full. Neat spraying not like the regupar paint spray can. Smooth spray. * Universal spray paint is a paint and primer in one that provides rust prevention, superior coverage and durability on any surface * Provides long lasting protection on interior/exterior surfaces including metal, wood, plastic, wicker and aluminum * Oil-based formula provides a durable protective coating with excellent resistance to abrasion, fading, chipping and dulling.
Outstanding, I learned a lot about painting the vinyl shutters. I have the very same project and wanted to check out my painter. Because of your video, I now know the questions to ask. Will also go with that 2 coats since these shutters sit in the North Carolina afternoon sun. Has faded these shutters twice before. We thought it was because we used a dark burgundy color? What do you think? Thanks
no primer is exterior .. even if it says it on the can .. the paint is the sealer and needs to be exterior ( for uv protection ) all primers will break down outside
Spraying really kicks ass on louvered doors. Couple years ago I was going to repaint some louvered closet doors in my house that were already white, and I just tried a can of rust oleum white in a spray can and it worked awesome. Just gotta do it outside and let it dry before you bring it in. Your door looks great! Are you going to clear coat it?? hahaha
Nice video, however......I noticed the Kilz spray can was labeled “interior” ......but I have found the Kilz exterior spray oil based product. Because most people don’t have a fancy sprayer system I would be interested in seeing how Krylon type spray cans would work on shutters. Yes I realize you are using a ( odd ) color paint, but if using a normal color off the shelf what kind of end result a person would get, I hate the thought of me hand brushing my 14 shutters.
that’s their original interior design.. no UV protection.. they didn’t have the others in a spray can.. the water based exterior one didn’t pass my test.. most metal primers are not exterior either... but they don’t put interior on the can... that’s just for people that don’t know anything hoping they don’t use it as a topcoat
Hi Chris, thank you for your home renovation videos. Thank you for great info! Just one question? I love your new shaker front door, would you please tell me where you purchased your door...Exactly what I’m looking for.?Thank you!
Chris thank you for the information on the door!...I’ll be heading to Lowe’s this week! 😄 My paintable shutters arrived yesterday, so glad I found your channel, it said there was instructions how to paint them, NO instructions included! I’m using your info. Thanks again!
Does anyone have experience doing a bonding kilz spray first then going over it with an exterior oil based paint by hand?? Going from dark brown to a blue gray but the bonder spray is white.
Hey Chris, do you have any social media accounts you have some what daily post on. Like a ChrisCraft Facebook page, instagram, or snapchat ? Started watching your videos while restoring my ride and got hooked on how great of a teacher you are. Would like to see more from you and wish you the best of luck brother!
What if someone already painted their shutters without a primer because they didn’t know better and now realize that they should have, is there something that person could put on top to protect the paint?
A person I have done work for before wants 22 shutters painted. I assume I will take them down but could leave them up as well. How many hours per shutter do you think this will take.... taking down, cleaning, scuffing up a bit, priming, painting, and putting them back up? Plus, she has the cost of the supplies. I am not sure I want this job. It might be better for her to buy new shutters which I can easily measure and replace.
@@chriscraft77022 I assume they were painted but I haven't looked at them. When I talk to her, I will recommend they buy new shutters in a color they like.
Can we use the following? Great video by the way. KILZ Original 13 oz. White Oil-Based Interior and Exterior Primer, Sealer, and Stain Blocker Aerosol.
I used an aerosol primer recently for the first time. The work area was less than 10 square feet in a laundry room with an open window and a fan set up to exhaust the fumes out. The house reeked of petroleum distillates for two days.
I only use floetrol when I need the paint to dry flat and perfect.. like on a door.. watch my painting a front door video and see what it did with thick paint
How much do you guys charge per shutter or what is a fair range? light prep 2 coat, have to paint the house behind them but only the front side, so im assuming ill have to take them down and reinstall after
Chris, I like that color. What color code is that blue? I have grey siding and would like to paint the plastic shutters the same blue you are using. Thanks.
@UCWCI9gISfJFX1CwLqMiYKww I appreciate the response, I had thought there was an expansion consideration but given the age of this video I was curious if you had noticed any effect. Great to know it's held up well and the extra info is appreciated. Thank you *Can't reply directly to your response for some reason.*
they sell kills outdoor try it.. they didn’t have it in spray at the time.. primer is covered by the paint... for about 100 years there was no such thing as exterior primer.. who leaves primer as a topcoat???
Awhile back you had restored the door panel of a 1970s chevelle. I know this is out of the blue, but I'm in the middle of restoring a chevelle myself and was wondering where you got that specific panel, and if it came used. Thank you!
look up stmc in spring... whatever they sell you is what you want.. i dont think he sells unassembled door panels anymore.. only complete ones.. but he stays on top of the best parts.... the ones in the video are the ones you DONT want because the little chrome starts to come off
Purdy brand is supposed to be the best, so I'm told, but you have to take care of them if you expect long life from them. Based on the plastic handle of the one used in the video, it looks like one of the generic ones that come in a set at the local home improvement store (like Project Source brand at Lowe's).
