Need a cleanshot valve buddy(this is not optional when using any extensions). It's going to nearly eliminate spitting. I also recommend getting some fflp tips, they spray way nicer at lower pressures so you won't get nearly as much blowback and get a softer more even sprayfan. Right now you're getting very, VERY lucky because you're not using any real colors... It's basically white on white, but once you start having actual contrast on your walls you'll be able to see the difference, especially before backrolling. I also highly recommend using emerald trim paint... And emerald wall paint... Especially on dark walls, it leaves behind an absolutely incredible finish with a nice microfiber roller (my favorite combination on high end projects). So the cleanshot valve... Just to give you a quick summary of its importance, first off it allows you to swivel your tip. So even if you're using a big extension you'll be able to get a good angle on even the tightest, tiniest spaces. In addition to this it has basically a pressure regulated mechanism right at the tip that you can adjust, this is going to be your best friend when you spray exterior vinyl/aluminum siding that you shouldn't be touching with a brush or roller, and where a clean consistent spray fan is crucial. Even without any extensions on you will notice added benefits of having a cleanshot valve at the end of your gun. It makes it feel so much more responsive. In the future I would consider upgrading your sprayer to a Graco 395 pc or 495pc... Fantastic units that will noticeably increase your speed and finish quality and make way less noise than your current setup... if you want to splurge on a dedicated trim sprayer the Graco gx19 (gxff overseas) is a great little compact unit with a hopper. Now I know what you might be thinking... These airless sprayers just pressurize my line to ~3000psi...how could it be faster? It just is, trust me. It sprays faster and cleaner with far less pressure drop. I remember when I first upgraded, and noticed productivity just flies through the roof. You instantly just notice that you all of a sudden have to move your arms faster or turn down the pressure a little (whatever you prefer in the moment). It's the equivalent of using a rearwheel drive car in the snow, then using an all wheel drive suv with studded snow tires, instantly noticeable performance difference (with the 395, the gx19 is just a massive convenience upgrade for trim). It will save you so much time spraying large projects out it'll blow your mind. It can just pump out the paint faster than you can imagine.... And you'll be ripping through those 5gallon buckets. Edit - you should also invest in thr yellow stir stick at Sherwin and start stirring up your paint with a drill... It makes the paint buttery smooth especially if you strain it as well... And gets the tint properly distributed better than even the shakers st Sherwin or homedepot. This is crucial on darker colors, especially if it's been sitting around for a few days. Heck I've seen some colors/products start to seperate within hours. Never hurts to stir it up before use. The thicker the paint thr more important this is, especially on things like blockfiller, drylock, or any other waterproofing paints or paints with sand added in for texture/grip. These products are practically unusable without stirring them up with a drill.

I read all that. And you’re 100% bang on. From the clean shot to the 490PC to SW Emerald (I use the Emerald urethane enamel for soffits and facia). I’d be laughed off the job site if I showed up with a Magnum X7 DIY grade sprayer.

Steep angle on removing tape - even when taking the tape off the roll (especially if the tape roll has been kicking around for a while) so that you get the full width of the tape and not have it shred from the roll or the substrate. I am amazed at how many DIY's (and novices) don't shut down the HVAC when doing messy work that really calls for blocking or shutting it down, same with thermostat/ smoke/ cO2's.. electric outlets, etc.,. Great Tips and awesome video - As All~ways!

Hey C Kuiper! I know it’s a simple thing to forget about doing. Sometimes I will start cutting trim during the finish stages of the house and forget to shut it off and then the filters will be clogged by the end of the morning. We don’t want that! Thanks for stopping by and watching!

I have a question, been painting forever but spraying only about 2 years. What takes more time masking the ceiling or cutting the ceiling? Like why not cut down a foot on these high ceilings ? Because it will flash ? I mean I see this video the job is almost white on white but would you mask and spray a darker color this same way ? I'm amazed at how people are spraying everything these days even interiors that a furnished with floors and carpets etc. How is that even possible!!? Does it not take more time to mask everything ? I was always under the impression if anything spray all the trim cut and roll the walls. I could ask questions for days. Thanks

When you get comfortable enough not to backroll you should grab a Cleanshot valve with an extension that long. It will get rid of spits. I bet you are getting a lot of spitting but don't notice it because of the backroll. If that was dark paint you would really see it. Good video though and good tips.

Reference Tip #5: Turn Off HVAC - In the past I hired "professional" painters who forgot to turn off my HVAC while spraying paint, ugggh. My HVAC guy was not pleased. I need to paint all of our interior doors, mouldings and baseboards. I have the same sprayer you have. I will be using it for the first time and wondering how much overspray I would get. Would it be ok if I mask off 12” around the crown mouldings plus the floors or should I plastic wrap all of the walls from the ceiling down? Don’t want to ruin the walls with overspray while doing the crown mouldings. I like the look of the spraying vs rolling on all trim. That’s why I bought the sprayer. I know I’m making work for myself but it is what it is.

I run the prox17 too. Started with the 515 tip, then tried a 517 because it seemed like I was not getting enough paint out. Wow, man what a difference. Yes. You have to keep that tip moving and have your spray technique down. But man, I love it!! Try one...no back rolling
@TheExcellentLaborer

Hey Ron! It seems to be a great sprayer. I really want to try that 517 tip. I have not experimented with a bunch of tips but I use this 515 and about everything. I actually have not tried and not back rolling. Maybe on the next house. I appreciate you watching!
@ronwalker4938
@ronwalker4938 2 года назад
@@TheExcellentLaborer Definitely get the 517. And you'll probably want to shorten those extensions. They cause spitting the more length you have. I run about 12 or 20" max. Which is also how I avoid back rolling. Quality paint is huge too. I use sherwin williams cashmere for walls and emerald for trim and doors. Nice, even overlap. Keep the tip moving and don't let off. Get er done! Oh, adding this...yes...run the 517 on max pressure. Also, run the FFLP 210 and 310 for trim and doors. Glass bubba!

I spray and backroll. If you don't backroll, the coverage will not be even and you have to use more paint. I can't imagine not backrolling. One guy sprays, and the other backrolls. Very fast. However, the last two guys each quit after one day. That rolling wears you out. Fortunately, you can do a whole house in one day, so, by the time they realize you are working them to death, your're done. FYI, anyone thinking of buying a less powerful machine, be ready to return it. It takes a lot of power to atomize a thick Latex effectively.

Thanks for the video. I have walls that are all plaster that I will be priming twice before painting with my main color and was wondering if back rolling was necessary? and if so could you explain what it does for the walls after you spray them, along with if you need to back roll after every coat. also when you back roll will you see the roller marks ? Thanks
