Sam, your videos are always such a pleasure to watch. You bring a positive energy to the work. And of course the instruction is top notch as well. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely beautiful! The painting itself looks intimidating to new artist but your tutorial was great, the way you break down each step with explanation makes it seem so doable. Will certainly look forward to your other videos. Thanks.
Excellent description of the colors you use for each section of your painting, which is very helpful! Most artists don't do this. It turned out beautiful. Thank you very much!
Thank you. I appreciate the combination of both plein air and studio work. With a watercolour plein air back ground, I’ve hesitated to add to pieces once they are home. I’m going to try it with oils/acrylics!
Hey Sam! i would love to live in New Zealand...its so beautiful and so are your paintings!! Im just getting back into my art and you are such an inspiration! Thank you for sharing!!
Sam, just watched a video of Andrew's of the two of you painting in the field. I was thinking of how much fun it would be to be able to paint with the two of you. Really love your tutorials. They are such a great help. Also thank you for introducing me to August Wilhelm Leu. Keep applying the pigment my friend, it helps so many of us.
Is it possible to "push things back into the distance" by covering them with a faint wash of zinc white? If i painted too bold, making something seem too far forward, can it be "pushed back" without repainting with more subdued color? Thank you so much! I really appreciate your teaching style and especially notes! And invitation to paint along :-) bless you and yours and happy healthing 💞💞🌈
Hi Lynn, I have personally not used zinc white but you can apply glazes in order to push back things into the distance however I have found it doesn't look as good as mixing the tones yourself. Whilst it can be frustrating sometimes repainting it gives it the best results even if it takes more time. You'll always learn something from it too so it's never a waste of time. Cheers 😊
Drying time varies depending on the colours you use, ultramarine blue and burnt sienna can dry in a couple of days but cadmium yellow takes much longer. Titanium white can take a week to dry. I mix my colour with Liquin Original which speeds up the drying.
Hi Samuel. How do you think about a much warmer green in the foreground of your painting? I have the idea of this mix: Green with the color of the mountains in the background. I have this painting in mind and I think, you understand what I mean: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/August_Wilhelm_Leu_-_Eine_Almwirtschaft_%281884%29.jpg My impression here is a harmony of greens an greenish greys from the mountain top down to the creek. Subtle mixed up may be with a nifty italian sienna or ochre and blue as well. Greetings from Bavaria.
Hi Didier, a very interesting question. In my own painting the green was quite warm but it may have appeared colder in the video as I paint under a white light and I try and keep lower light conditions in my studio. I love this painting you have sent me the link to and this is one of my favourite paintings by Leu, he absolutely nailed the greens in this painting and the tonal dynamic. With regards to my own painting there is no green in the background mountain as most of the mountain face is exposed rock and at this particular time of year the tussock grass is prevalent which makes the mountain foliage look a pale yellow / brown.
OMG that background is gorgeous! Thank you for allowing us to use this info. Wondering Samuel, how long do you let your painting dry before starting details? (Just one day with liquin?) Your paining this time is totally outstanding! Still want to go there soon. I love it! 💖
Thanks Yovette. With regards to your question the answer is yes you can start adding detail to your painting as soon as it touch dry and if you are using liquin it should be dry the following day.
Fantastic demo, and gorgeous painting ! Don't add a boat or people or whatever, too cheesy, really. Enough focal points as is, the colours are really beautiful, not too much saturation.
Good night. a question, Your work is by section, See you in a direct video. However, it is done by section as it has drying. The video presents as being in a single .. What time of drying d
This painting was completed over many sessions. As I was mixing the colours with Windsor and Newton Liquin Original the colours were generally dry within 24 hours.
Hey, Samuel! Very nice painting ....... love the mountains .... beautiful subdued effect. The tree has a very realistic feel to it. As a focal point, a couple of seagulls would maybe do the trick. Eleo (Norway)
Thank you Sam for sharing your knowledge and helping, your very good teacher...and thank you so much for taking the time with your notes on your blog. So so helpful ...
Good question! ...the answer is yes you can desaturate using grey as it contains all the colours on the colour wheel pretty much. I would advise against using a pre-mixed grey as it can deaden your colours. Instead mix your own grey using the colours you already have on your palette, that way it will be more cohesive and harmonious with your other colours
Amazing how much the highlights on the mountains during the block-in add to them! Also that scene behind you at the end when you did the outro, would make a great painting, with the trees on the left. Great video as always
I really love your style of brush strokes. Although I am a learner I try and copy your style. I am a retired Indian Army Colonel, so dont have any intention of becoming an expert artist, but just want to improve and enjoy painting whatever years I am left with. Thank you so much. Colonel Kanwar......... , India
This was awesome Sam 🖒 very good tutorial and the painting turned out beautiful. I noticed at intro and ending the same scene is autumn . Would make a nice painting aswell .
Thanks Linda. If I am going to varnish a painting I wait at least a year for the oil paint to properly dry. However for many artists having to wait a year is too long in which case I use retouch varnish which you can apply straight away once the painting is touch dry. This creates a nice sheen over the painting.
So I never see you blending any of your skies or water. So I am obviously not understanding exactly how you are using the paint. I will go through the notes and try to understand a bit more.
Hey Penny, sorry about that, I squeeze a lot of information into short videos. In some of my earlier videos I demonstrate painting clouds, but don't worry I'll make some future videos on painting clouds. Also I am going to shortly have some videos for sale from my website soon, these will be in-depth in real time, around two to three hours long and I'll show you everything...stay tuned.
Yes, stretched canvas or linen. I have also painted on wooden panels, they are lovely to paint on. Here is a link to two of my paintings that were done on wooden panels: www.samuelearp.com/studies 😊
Just amazing and your explanation of what's going on, and what and how you use the paint and brushes is first class !! Probably the best tutorial I've watched yet !! Good man !!
I love your art.
Thanks Rusty. As this was a commission I can’t remember if I photographed it or not so I could make prints from it, but if I did I’ll get some prints available from my website 😊
Hello Gibran, I am in the process of making some full length, real-time painting videos where I’ll explain everything. They will be available for sale from my website soon, stay tuned 😊
Thanks Samuel. The scene is indeed arresting although exacting and tricky as you rightly point out. But your approach to it is fairly encouraging, simplifying the pathway as it were. A seasoned plein air painter you must be !
great painting ,Sam ,,and it is amazing how you answer nearly everybody in the comments section ,,you are about the only artist that does that ,,all the best ,,and happy days from down under
Thank you Samuel. You are my most inspiration, you are teaching with good will. Every beginers can learn a lot from your process with your explanation. Im still owe you the copy i have done for two of your paintings. Best regards. Love you.
Another great tutorial! Thanks! If I can't be at outdoors to paint a landscape what would be the most accurate source to look at - a smartphone with really vibrant colours, laptop with relatively dim colours or a printet photo?
Thanks. Check out the blog that goes with this video, I have a list of colours there 😊 www.samuelearp.com/new-blog/2019/4/29/how-to-paint-water-trees-and-mountains
