Photographs are a great tool to work from but they have a lot of built in problems to be aware of. They can distort shapes and perspective, as well as give us wrong values and color. So the key is to paint what you know along with what the photo gives you.

Yes, the ability/need to make critical decisions and adapt to changing or distorted information is key to anything in life; and is put to practical use in any attempt to make a painting. The painting is first "built" in the brain, before the hand and eyes come into play transferring information onto the canvas or board. Robotically just copying anything will always look "fake" and soul-less.
