The subject, the way you explained, your voice, your articulation, the technique .. everything was so right! Thanks for sharing this video, Tim. I myself used to paint as a kid then had to take up a job. At 59 I am planning to take up oils again but was very wary of all the cleanup I have to do. And I hate the drying time of Acrylics. You have convinced me to take up water mixable Oils. Thanks. 😊 And that painting you did was just fabulous.

Thanks for the intro to water soluble oils. I've used acrylics for 40+ years and still struggle with the fast dry times. Each time I consider switching to oils, the cost, fumes, and need to trade out brushes keep me from making the jump. Your intro, as well as your beautiful work, give me hope. I'll be exploring more about these products and hope to find a reasonable path to making the leap. Thanks much. P.S., I love your techniques. Effecient and effective, with spectacular results!

Wow! I tried water soluble oils 20 years ago and my results were dismal, so back to traditional oils until a week ago. My dogs started wheezing and their breathing was so labored that I bought a set again. Again, frustration reigned. Yours is the first video I’ve found that actually explains the process from beginning to end. Now I know why I had so much difficulty and I’ll persevere.. I’ve experimented with many mediums through the years. I can’t imagine not being able to paint with oils and that’s where I was heading. I thank you and my dogs thank you!

This is so fantastic. I have never heard of water soluble oil paints. I currently draw with colored, graphite, or charcoal pencils and did not want to try oil painting because of the toxic fumes. This gives me hope that I can try painting. I still love using pencils for smaller, simpler projects but I know that I need to expand my skills and artistry to include painting.

Never thought of using acrylic as an under-painting for watermixable oils. I don’t use my watermixable oils as thick as you do, often layering, and was wondering if I could also try an acrylic under-painting with a slightly more fluid mix of the oil layers on top? If you haven’t tried it and don’t know, I’ll just give it a try. Thanks for the upload Tim 👍🏼 The way you get your paintings to express the light is phenomenal by the way. Beautiful ❤️

Hi, just watched this upload…really interest. I was given some of these paints for Easter. I paint in acrylics. So I’m a complete novice with this. But I had started a painting, blocked out in acrylics - as is usual - then thought I can do the detail in these new oil ones. However, I don’t like the flat acrylic finish against the shiny oils. I should have studied it a bit I think. Perhaps there is something out there that I could have used between the acrylic and then the oil…. Im feeling a bit stressed. So I shall study your previous videos, I will hopefully pick hints and tips along the way. Thank you 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Hi Tim thanks very much for this tutorial and the painting is beautiful. Tim can I ask what the drying time would be after finishing the painting using these water soluble oils with the linseed oil. I know the real oils are pain cos they take so much longer than any other paint to dry. I believe the ordinary oils take up to 3 months before they are even touch dry and then to try to store them safely so they dont get destroyed. And thevsmell is not great for me cos I have chest problems. I love the look of oils but I cant use them mostly because of my chest. But also to try and store them safely. Its a no go area really. I was wondering how long approx these would take to dry completely. Id love to try them out. Thanks again for this because this is the first time I' ve seen a tutorial with water soluble oil paints. Here's his response to a similar question asked further down in the comments -- Hi Lorrie... it depends on the paints you are using , how thickly they are applied and whether or not you are using any mediums with the paints. Some colours (reds especially) take forever to dry, while some colours dry very quickly. Thick paint takes longer to cure... and some mediums (impasto medium) can drastically speed up drying time. The main thing is to make sure the paint has fully cured and dried all the way through before varnishing. You can do a touch test to determine whether or not the paint has cured. Areas of thick paint should feel firm and not soft and squishy... if in doubt you are better to give the painting a little more time before varnishing😊👍

You can also use student-quality - aka cheap - acrylics for 50% of your painting while working up the basic shapes and values, and then switch over to the more expensive oils when you need the consistency & colors of those paints.

How economic is water-soluble oil vs acrylic, especially for a beginner? How long does it take to dry? Also, can you just paint over the oil with gesso if you don't like the painting?
@timpackerfinearts

It can be much more economical because the paints stay workable much longer... days even weeks if you use a standard wet palette. I would not re coat them with gesso... I',m not sure how good the adhesion would be

@@timpackerfinearts Hi Tim, thanks again for this video. I do have a question, as i I don't have this issue with traditional oil. I have been trying out the artisan W&N oils( Water soluble.) I noticed that when i paint in layers, the paint doesn't want to stick onto the canvas, lifting paint off that is already on it.. This makes me waste a lot of paint. Do you know why this is happening? I do dab off excess water from my brush onto a paper towel after cleaning it, so i think that part is ok. when i applied a thin layer of linseed oil, i made sure there was no dripping. it almost seems like the canvas is somehow too wet that when i do go on to add another layer of paint, it keeps lifting paint off. Will impasto solve this issue? is it the quality of the paint ? is it possible, i am not removing enough excess water as i think? Thanks a lot in advance! Sam
@timpackerfinearts
@timpackerfinearts 3 года назад
@@QballSam whenever you touch a wet brush to a wet canvas you will either leave paint on the canvas or pick up paint from the canvas. Usually a bit of both. If you start with thinner applications of paint and then gothicker you should be able to add paint to an area that is wet. If you want to layer applications without the risk of lifting paint then you might want to let the paint dry before adding a layer. The impasto medium will certainly help with that😊

What do you use to varnish water mixable oils? Also, does the varnish matter if you use acrylics before the WMO? Do you need an isolation coat before using the oils? Thanks for your help😊

I use the spray on Kamar Varnish by Krylon. just make sure to follow the instructions on the can and make sure to invert the can and spray to clear the nozzle after each use. :)

Hi Tim, beautiful work! I accidentally put the linseed oil on late this evening and dont have time to start the painting! WIll I now have to wait for it to dry before applying another coat of the oil to paint into? Can you tell me the typical drying time for linseed oil if I have to wait? Thanks for any tips or suggestions.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. If the oil is still wet you can paint into it the next day. If it dries you can reapply 😊👍

Thanks for this instruction using the water soluble oils - how long did you let your base coated canvas dry before you put on the layer of clear medium?
@timpackerfinearts
@timpackerfinearts 2 года назад
You need to wait until it is totally dry. That’s why I use fluid acrylics to tone the canvas and block in the composition. They dry much faster.😊👍

Tim How long should I wait to varnish my painting. I read that water soluble oil dries in 3-5 days but then I read you should wait 6 months til you varnish… what is your method?
@timpackerfinearts
@timpackerfinearts 2 года назад
Hi Lorrie... it depends on the paints you are using , how thickly they are applied and whether or not you are using any mediums with the paints.

Thank you, very useful tips. Question: why do you apply the oil layer to the underpainting? To improve the paint flow? I started oil painting with Cobra oils, but can‘t figure out the proper consistency where the paint still has enough covering strength but it is flowing like in the RU-vid tutorials :-) I also have some tubes of Artisan but they are even stickier than the Cobras directly from the tube.

the oil allows the paint to slide on more easily...otherwise it is more like painting in dry brush

Hi I am confused if you have to finish the painting in one day or can you continue the next day or a few days later with this method? Does the painting have to be touch dry to paint more layers ? And do you have to follow fat over lean rule ? Thanks
@timpackerfinearts
@timpackerfinearts 2 месяца назад
you can work on the painting over multiple days. Because we are just applying the thin coat of oil to the canvas as the first step and are not using the oil medium any more during the process... you don't need to worry about the fat over lean rule. and I paint wet into wet paint layers

⁉️❓❓❓Can you paint acrylic over water mixable oil paint? I have an old painting that I never finished that it was with this type of oil paint. I’d like and preferred to paint over it with acrylic and finish the painting. I have used an acrylic varnish over the entire painting as an acrylic surface.. is this possible?
@timpackerfinearts
@timpackerfinearts 8 месяцев назад
No... you shouldn't put acrylic over oil... it will not adhere properly
