How to Paint Your Boat with Interlux Brightside: Part 1 - Prepping and Priming

In this episode, I will give the deck one last look over and clean up any cosmetic things I missed. Then I completely wipe down the deck with acetone to prep for the primer. Then I lay down 2 coats of primer and show you how to mix with thinner and roll it out.

hey man, thanks so muh for the video. it was reiiy hepful. better than any others ive watched. Painting my first boat. i was having issues with the tiping. i did what you showed. it wored so much better. thanks agin fir your time

Thanks! This was very helpful! I'm going to paint a fiberglass RV this winter and am strongly considering using this paint. My Dad built and fiberglassed 23 boats so I'm not completely in the dark but still have stuff I need to learn. I'll be back to watch this a bunch of times. 😀

Thank you very much! I have my first primer coat down. Hoping it's not too thick. Very interested in seeing the sanding in the next video so I can get a second primer layer on tomorrow!

If you put on just enough paint with an appropriate size foam roller, you can tip with that roller, going slowly and lightly.

can i just paint it without primer. what happens if i dont use primer thanks for the video great help

The laminate will bleed through and you'll have ghosting as best. Worst case you will have adhesion issues.

Would a neoprene roller stop the bubbles?

Why thin the primer? I’ve been using smooth to semi smooth rollers from home depot and a foam brush with hard angles to tip. Never thined the bright side either.

Can you put a second coat on within a certain time frame without having to sand again?

Not with the brightside paint... you can do it with their Perfection line, as well as most other 2 part polyurethane paints

Hey looking for some advice. I noticed that you wore a respirator for the primer, but not the paint. Did you find it was not necessary to wear one? I am painting an open wooden boat with Interlux Brightside outside (not in a garage)? Do you think I need to wear one? Thoughts? Thanks! I enjoyed the video.

Yes! You always need a respirator when painting indoors. Not something you really want to do with the doors open either unless you want a bunch of dust in your paint. So many people overlook the importance of protecting their lungs. Not just any respirator either, whatever you get will need chemical (organic compound) cartridges. Dust cartridges or dust mask wont do anything for you regarding odor.
