I did this last year! I do not regret it one second it gives that extra something my downstairs needed. I totally love it, I seen so many decorators doing it and when I first told my husband he’s like, do you think? I said look at these pictures I came completely prepared to show him and he fell in love with it. When we were done doing it he was so excited, he said it was one of the best ideas I’ve had. Now that I’m done watching your video I do love the black I just feel terrible for you that you have to do the underneath I never even thought of that see we have a closet under our stairs and we have laminate/Pergo everywhere downstairs and then we went up the stairs with the Pergo so we only had to paint railings and things like that. You had to do so much more work I applaud you! Just a sidenote you remind me of myself 20 years ago I just can’t even tell you how crazy it is. I would stay up all night I loved getting that instant gratification of it being done. I wish I had half of that gumption that I used to have.
I love this!! Yessss I’m so glad he loves it too cause it’s definitely given the wow factor to our living room as well. I love that you came prepared as well 🤣 I did the same and I kept seeing them on tiktok! Love it 😍
Looks great! I am a big DIYer and am painting my staircase black. I am pretty good at cutting in, but mad respecf for black paint, cutting in---no tape?? I am using a Sherwin Williams floor rated black matte. Fingers crossed it looks as good as yours!! 😊
Mines just been done black and all the doors skirting stairs banister but we have carpet on stairs, how you got 750ml to go so far is beyond me, we went with the most expensive B and Q paint that is meant to be ablle to scour it? not a chance the paint is not that great to begin with but we picked a black colour that had to be special mixed i tell you its not worth it at all stick with Dulux as we should have but then you cant get a custom colour but the result looks fatastic.
Was the wood originally glossed ? We’re wanting to do ours black, and was in two minds wether to sand it prior with it being a gloss finish. Any advise would help
It was and I think maybe giving these a sand to just toughen the surface would definitely have been a good shout and then perhaps using Zinser Bin shellac based primer instead. Doing these two would definitely make it more hard wearing 😀
Hey! Yes the paint was fine. I really should’ve sanded and primed the stairs though so make sure you don’t miss that step! The only scags I had were my dogs little nails every time he ran up the stairs. I should’ve installed a runner as well as it was slippery. Hope that helps.
It’s thin for a reason it’s water based and hard wearing and that’s why it needs to be 3 coats you don’t want it going on thick because your going to step on the stairs and you don’t want thick paint clumping and you don’t have to lightly sand in between coats with the Johnston paint 🤦🏾♀️
Meg, have you had any problems with the stairs being slippery. I want to do do my stairs but don't want my mum to slip. The stairs look stunning and don't even start me with the prices going up in b&m. Thank you.
Hey hey! Thanks so much. The stairs are slippery ☹️ I have slipped down these and bruised my bum! But we do intend to get carpet treads to go on these to avoid anymore accidents! If you’ve got carpet perhaps just paint the spindles or depending on budget get a runner and bars for the runner as not worth taking any risks for you or your mum. These stairs however are so steep and would not pass building regulations today so hopefully yours wouldn’t be as steep! Hope that helps and b&m price increases are ridiculous!! Thanks so much 😍
Amazon sells stick- on stair treads in clear and black that have a subtle look, but give a good grip! Definitely recommend for a steep/slippery stairway!
Meg, if you don't like to paint, and you have no painting experience -- why did you post this video? It appears you figured it out as you went along, and In the end, that's what matters. In your next DIY video, I hope you'll share some of the things you learned about painting from this video -
Hey, I love painting 🥰 sorry if it didn’t come across that way in this video. Maybe I don’t love painting the same spot 3 times as much as painting once. What I learnt from painting the stairs was to use a paint with better coverage so you don’t have to do as many coats. Hope that helps.
