So grateful for this tutorial. I just purchased a Sabrent USB hard drive to use for backups on a Linux system and I am not sure how I would have ever managed to get it working without your help. I was no stranger to working from a command line. I worked for almost 20 years supporting a system running on OpenVMS. I wrote software fixes in C and Fortran and did quite a bit of system maintenance which included writing a lot of DCL scripts and maintaining batch queues but I am a total newbie to Linux. This video was exactly what I needed to get my backup going. Thanks!

You're right, I'm a newbie and this was a blizzard of ultra technical information going by at light speed. Much of what he was typing in left me wondering if he was gathering information or actually making changes. When you're advanced like he is, it's easy to assume all of this is obvious to everyone. He should understand that beginners need help too, and talk slower and proceed slower.

Great tutorial! Thank you! The only thing missing (for me) is mounting drives(Manual and fstub. And mounting with different user rights). Because all we do in this video is prerequisite to using drive.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I have been switching all of my Windows boxes to Linux (Kubuntu) but have run into issues dual-booting an old MBP with a second drive. I have used gparted some but much prefer using the terminal to do things.
Gary, would you please make a video that shows how to address the following partition scenario?: A Linux machine set-up with a single drive, where that drive has 3 partitions: 1) OS 2) Apps 3) Data (saved files) As time goes by, the "data" partition starts to run low on space. But the other two partitions have lots of available space. How can you reallocate space from one of the other partitions, such that X GBs will become part of the "data" partition? Thank you.
I want to add one that is ALREADY formated and partitioned- because it has BLEND OS on it--- and I want to be able to run either BLEND (on one drive) or SPaRKY- (on my main drive)... anbd have BOTH in boot menu-- WITHOUT reworking my drive that has BLEND on it.. POSSIBLE?????

When I used command 'w' The messaged said... 'The partition table has been altered' However it showed a fail message: 'Filed to remove partition 5 from system: Device or resource busy Failed to update system information about partition 1: Device or resource busy' The kernel still uses the old partitions. The new table wil be used at the next reboot. Syncing disks' 😱I don't know what to do
I had an issue trying to format a 2nd partition because "dev/sda2/ did not exist" when I tried to mkfs.ex4 dev/sda2. fdisk/sda showed that there were two partitions, but blkid and lsblk only showed /dev/sda1. I needed to reboot and then sda2 showed up and I could format it. 🦄
i have a ubuntu booted in my hard disk which i was using in my old spare CPU(Dual Core) after a years when i booted it for the first time i found that all the usb port are not detecting any device (no mouse,no pendrive ,no light) i have a keyboard with ( PS/2 port 6-pin mini-DIN) which is detectable, but no mouse the i can use so i think if i somehow boot the window in HDD it should work but I think the Motherboard may have a problem pls can anybody help me ... thank you
Hi Gary, Subbed. Awesome channel. Long time Mac user and Linux dabbler, but have an old W10 Acer laptop kicking around, so I put Manjaro Cinnamon on it. Not before creating a dual boot Win10/Ubuntu. Now I have wiped Windows partition and want to clear the bootloader in BIOS . Now it will ony boot in BIOS (Legacy) mode and UEFI gives no bootable device. Since I no longer have or want Windows, I can hardlly remove the manual EFI entry in BIOS. How to get it back to UEFI booting? In other words start the laptop as a dedicated Manjaro system booting UEFI? Thanks.
If I want to partition and format an external 1 TB SSD to put Linux Mint (Debian edition) on, how would I know how much GB to allocate to each partition? I know it is up to me how much storage I want obviously, but I am not sure what the minimum needed is for Root and Swap. For example if I want to make a Root, a Swap and a Home partitions... Would 25600MiB "ext4" be enough for Root, and 16 GB for swap and the rest for Home? I am lacking a reference to use or examples of what is considered average for space allocation.
This is where I have troubles, too. I think it's because you have to MOUNT the dev afterwards. But I'm not certain. I've already asked Gary about that. Let's see if he responds. 🙂
Is there a way to slice an SSD of say 500GB bearing Linux OS probably spread over the entire span into multiple partitions? One of them still retaining the native OS?
Hi Gary: I have laptop on which I used to have windows 10 and I dual booted it with some android os (primeos) and it was working fine until one day after windows 10 updates it got corrupted and I can see and use small portion (9GB out of 100GB) of my SATA hard drive now through usb fedora live only. I can't re install windows 10 or fedora on my SATA drive as it says I don't have enough free space. Please help and please guide me to recovery /format my SATA hard drive and I will absolutely be obliged for this great help. I don't have any data on this laptop but I need to install windows 10 or atleast fedora os to continue my life and work. Please help and thank you
Gary, if I use cfdisk to create a HPFS/NTFS/exFAT on a USB memory stick all appears fine, fdisk lists it as such but gparted shows it as ext4 and if I try to format using gparted the exFAT option is greyed out. It can be mounted and used fine but gparted reports it wrongly.
Hi, I need your help, please. I have an Imac 27" 2008 that I fully formated and I installed Windows 7, then due to memory I could not upgrade it to Win10, so I went with install Linux Zorin over windows 7 as a clean install, so I now have just Zorin. The problem is that my wife does not like this OS due to some program limitations. So I have decided to revert to the original Imac to is native OS as I have the original disks. I have been unable to install the Mac OS X with the original CD inserted as Zorin does not recognise, I tried to boot the OS X disk but Zorin keeps booting up. My question is, can I inside Zorin command it to format the whole HD drive so I can do a clean install of Mac OS X?? Thanks
I would like to see some discussion of alternatives and methods for encrypted cloud storage under Linux. I am looking at moving totally from Windows to Linux on my personal machines and one of the things I'll need to replace is Boxcryptor Classic that gives me the ability to store personal data in Dropbox as individual encrypted files with obfuscated file names. Locally it creates a virtual disk that is unencrypted to Windows but encrypts on the fly into Dropbox. Something like Veracrypt is not viable as it requires the entire encrypted drive to be updated in the cloud whenever it changes. Boxcryptor does support Linux in their newer versions but the free option is inadequate (need access from more machines) and I don't want to add yet another monthly subscription. I have found Cryptomator that seems like it will meet my needs but I'm wondering what other options there might be. One added complexity is that I would like to retain Windows support so that I can access my personal files from my Windows desktop at work. Ideally I would also like to have at least read-only access to the files from my Android phone and iPad too, but those are not absolutely necessary. I do need full access from Linux on home desktop and laptop and Windows on work desktop. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
I'm trying to install a fresh OS of Parrot Linux on a 250GB SSD drive with 4GB of Ram and when I try to make a swap file it all becomes a mess. Do you think you can make a video showing how to install Parrot Linux with a swap file as I have been at this for hours and just cant do it. Thanks Gary.

I have a Rasp-PI4 4gb, flashed my 64gb card it with a Lineage Android OS + OpenGapps so i can install google playstore. Unfortunately the build has only created an 8gb partition on the drive. I was wondering how to extend it into the unmounted section of my card. I was thinking maybe from the cmd line?. Ive tried putting my SD card back into my laptop and used several partition programs to try and "merge" it. It wont let me :( and i cant install Gparted because its an Andriod OS On the Pi is can get to cmd line underneath the "android os" by power menu, F5 , into recovery TWRP and then advanced, terminal is in there. I can get to df -h which shows my partitions dev/block/mmcblk0p4 is allocated as 4.4gb - id like to put 60gb on it please Also sudo doesnt work on cmd line for some reason :( Is there a way of booting off a USB and then partitioning the SD card whilst it sits in the pi? Any help would be greatly appreciated, all the best /// Btw ive now learned how to mine crypto at 92hs LOL not much, so i switched to the Android os and now put all those "sell your bandwith" apps on it. So Raspberry pi should make about £22 month Eee!!! Thats going straight into DCAing Bitcoin :)
Seriously ive been on this for 4 DAYS!!! >>>ive just found the solution and it was in the TWRP FAQ's "This is a 7 GB image, remaining space on your sdcard will remain unallocated. Easiest way to extend /data partition is to simply flash my resize zip in TWRP." So i went to the link on my pc, downloaded the zip file. Saved to usb drive. Put that into my PI. Pressed F5 to go into recovery and TWRP. I then just installed this HARD TO FIND SOD IT zip file. OH YES! i have my 56gb of more storage. I dont know what it did with the cmds ill have a look. If you download the file, unzip it into a folder, then and change a file called *rpi-resize.shjj* to *rpi-resize.txt* youll see all the code in there and what they did. Hope that helps.
You shouldn't do this on disks that already have data on them, this isn't about resizing and partitioning, this video is about to format a new disk without any data on it.
Oh man ! , I was looking for a one click fuction in Linux to do that !. Is the same thing in all Linux Distros ?, BTW, make a video tutorial showing how to install that modern Linux Distros on Raspberry Pi 4, like MX Linux, LMDE or Linux Lite, Is possible to do something like that ?, I´m new in Linux, thanks.
nobody talks about how to use the partitions as linux home directory is in the same partition as the root. even if you change the /home to another partition when you are installing linux there is no practical use of other disk partitions in linux. lets say you have sda2 sda3 sda4 then what? where are you mounting them? in the home directory again? then whats the point? and if not in the home directory again whats the point of having different partitions? when you reinstall linux there are all be destroyed if the OS gets corrupted and you dont have time to unmount them. nobody in the whole internet tend to even mention it. its ridiculous
There are lots of practical reasons, any good Unix system admin book explains it well. The reasons include easy of backup/restore, physically limiting the amount of disk space a mount can use, protecting data during a reinstall, and so on. Of course a bigger advantage is when those partitions are on different disks, but the underlying tech is the same, which is maybe why you are confused.
I know this is all good information, but for a noob like me you're way too fast and techy. I need this dumbed down, ie broken down into plainer English. Anybody who can keep up with you probably doesn't need to have this process explained to them.

Hi Gary - The option 7 in my list of disk formats is not NTFS? It is - PowerPC PReP boot - So I used sudo mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdc1 - The USB IDE drive mounts ok but says I do not have permission - I can not make or save any folders or files on the USB IDE HDD - Can you help.
I want to install games on another disk but it throws me an error and it is because of the partition but I don't want to lose the information of that disk that I do?
