Develop a rhino hide in place of human skin, a very high boredom threshold,and a very strong stomach! Save laughing about the patients, until you get into the sterilizing room with the other nurses, where the patient can't hear you!( I did the job for 21 1/2 yrs, and I left due to a combination of very low pay, bad working conditions, and very long hours!

I won't work under the GDC! They tried to do me for going into my own dentist for an rct 2 on my own mouth, because they didn't bother to ask the right questions! 1. Why was I there? RCT 2. 2. Was I working, or was I the patient? I was the patient. They didn't seem to like it when they threatened to prossecute me, and I replied that they would have to do the same to every person who'd ever visited their dentist for treatment! More fool them, for trying to cross me!
@CharlysLife

I’m pretty sure you’re allowed to visit your own dentist for treatment, everyone does it’s a perk of the job! Not sure why they tried to prosecute for that, doesn’t seem right?

How long is dental nursing school in the UK ? I feel like in the UK dental assisting and orthodontic assisting is considered a professional career , but in the USA they use the term dental assistant, and it's still not considered a professional career .
@CharlysLife
@CharlysLife 6 лет назад
Heaven seeker hey :) it depends what route you take...most people will do the college course apprenticeship so you go to work but for a small amount of money (an apprentice is like an intern in the US) and you go to college one evening a week for about 9 months (September till July-but this excludes the UK school holidays so we won’t go during Christmas break, Easter break and half terms bringing it down to 9 months) Some courses are 2 years again going to college one evening a week (although you learn all the same stuff it takes longer as they spread the learning out more) or you could go into it straight from school and do 2 full time years in college, but with this one you wouldn’t be working as it’s still full time education so you don’t get the experience-your qualification will still be worth just as much though. Once you’re qualified you are known as a “dental care professional” (that’s in the screenshot I put in it my GDC number) so I would say it’s more of a career in the UK as apposed to not-if I wanted to move to a different country I believe I can take that qualification with me and not have to re-train, but if I went to the US I don’t think my qualification would stand as I know the way the UK and US system for dentistry is different as we also have the NHS.
@newplusultra
@newplusultra 6 лет назад
Thank you so much . I was researching the pay in the UK for orthodontic therapist aka orthodontic assistant here in the USA , I was blown away how much more money they earn in the UK compared to the USA
@CharlysLife
@CharlysLife 6 лет назад
Yeah we do earn more money as a dental nurse over here, and orthodontic nursing is slightly different as well I used to be an orthodontic nurse for a while before I moved practises. However everything is more expensive over here haha so we need the money to afford anything! We earn roughly between £8-£12 an hour depending on experience and how long you've worked in a place-and generally that goes for orthodontic nursing as well x

When I did it in the 1990's with the RADC, it was 2 yrs. I trained as a civillian with the army dental corp, and it was a lot of fun, as there was a lot of hands on stuff. I did it before they made the dsa law, before criminal records checks and before cpd. (I still count cpd as optional, not a must! After all why waste time and money, doing a course you're not intrested, in JUST to get your virtual cpd hours up?)
@e.j.thomas9994

My practice has been asking for a dbs check and I can’t do a check on myself. Did you face something like this?
@CharlysLife
@CharlysLife 5 лет назад
You need to do the check online, everyone needs a DBS. But someone has to verify it’s you, your employer should be the one to verify x
@e.j.thomas9994
@e.j.thomas9994 4 года назад
No, because I did most of my 21 1/2 yrs on the job, before all this stuff came into the mainstream. I believe the dbs only needs to be renewed every 2 yrs, and the last I heard, was that some companies who do this, can charge as much as £225! The lowest fee I have heard of was £98! (Still too high, if you ask me though!) I also resent having to pay £98 per yr for a certificate from the GDC to say I'm a member. (I could just use a template off my computer, spend 5p on ink and paper at home.) So what part of this costs £98? The GDC is run BY dentists FOR dentists. The ABDSA is run BY nurses FOR nurses. I will never be run on the job, by the GDC.

Bini rai Limbu hi :) I really have no idea about where specific classes are, the only advice I can really give is to look at dental practices that are hiring trainee’s and the practice should put you on the right path weather it’s through college or an online qualification. I don’t teach the course or anything like that I’m just a dental nurse so I can only really answer things specifically to the job or to the course I did which was Level 3 diploma in dental nursing

One thing before you start... Don't expect to get rich in that job. I did it for 21 1/2 yrs, and I've never been even paid minimum wage in any of the places I worked in. The hours are long, and in one practice I worked in, there wasn't room for a nurses chair, so I had to stand all the time! After they changed the law, and made the dsa manditory, I left the job altogether. Too much stress, and long hours for me! I have never been able to afford a place of my own, due to crap pay! It just didn't make economic sense. (I'll turn 50 this August, and I STILL live with my parents!)You're welcome to the job, 'cos I'd need to be paid a lot more than the £700 pcm I was paid before!

cristinne ciobanu hey :) I’m not too sure about moving country...I’m pretty sure that if you go to America you have to re-train but as far as any other country I don’t know if that qualification holds-you would probably need to phone the GDC and find out. I know you can voluntarily come off of the register but you have to keep up with CPD-but again I’m not sure how long you can be off the register for. The GDC would be the best people to ask regarding coming off of the register or moving country. You will still need to be submitting CPD hours at the end of the CPD year-and when you go back on the register you need to get all of your references and signatures again x
