Consolidation is great if you actually DO THE MATH, because it can save heaps in interest, because you basically do the debt avalanche. You just gotta be smart enough to cancel all the credit cards, and change your behaviour. Really depends how much self control you have.

Pardon me but I don't understand since most companies have interest rates just as high, and in some cases higher than credit cards. Do they do something different with the interest?

I did consolidate my car loan onto my homeloan. I will never consolidate my credit card or anything like that onto my homeloan. Those feel like steps backwards but the car didn’t feel like that to me. Carloan interest was triple the amount of the homeloan interest and I upped the amount of what I was paying off on my home loan and never reduced it once I consolidated the two loans. Replacement car was a need. Already spent thousands repairing the same problem twice and when that problem returned a 3rd time I got rid of that car and got a reliable second hand car with low miles that I have had for the past 6 years now. This was long before I knew about Dave Ramsey. I paid for my first two cars with cash and was hoping to do the same with my 4th car hopefully after the house is paid off.

It’s just a change in mindset that YOU are your own “credit card.” If you have money in the budget for it, you buy it, or save for it. If it’s a true emergency, you use your emergency fund. I can’t believe that that concept used to be so alien to me.

So how do you stay motivated when you get to the bottom of the snowball and the amount is so high? I personally am finding motivation just paying down my largest loan first which is also the highest interest rate. Because I know when I get to my smaller loans, the ending will come incredibly fast. That is what personally motivates me, but hey as long as I am paying as much as I can and I guess thats all that matters.
@monp.4903
@monp.4903 3 года назад
That is what im doing. I paid the smallest ones off first, as motivation and quick scratch off 2 cc's within 2 months. Now tackling highest APR cards. I created an excel sheet listing all my cc's, their APRs, balances, etc, have in chronological order for payment due dates, my payday dates listed, etc. I budged each payment and can organize each payment and see when i can finish each cc balance.

That proverb was talking about co-signing for someone. It’s basically saying if you do that you should try as hard as you can to get your name erased from the contract because anything that person does you will then be responsible for financially and that could cost you a lot of money if you co-signed for a dumb person who isn’t responsible.

Carrie Jahnke saving up to thousands in interest is very significant
@zvezdapadalica15
@zvezdapadalica15 4 года назад
Exactly. My husband and I moved our debt to a credit line that is 7% interest instead of 19.99% on the card. We cash budget and the credit cards are used once a week for gas only, which we pay off right away, so that we can maintain a good credit score. Despite having $16000 in debt, we both have a great credit score as we always paid on time. We will save a lot of money on interest and we are throwing everything at paying off the credit line now. I think consolidating debt can be a good thing as long as you aren’t going crazy spending money on the cc you just “paid off” with the credit line.
@russsnyder2026
@russsnyder2026 4 года назад
zvezdapadalica15 yeah it is ridiculous that Dave says otherwise. Saving money that you wouldn’t normally have to pay is a good thing. He’s wrong on this one. People need to wake up to the fact that Dave says credit score is useless. Not everyone has 50 million in cash to buy a car or home, it’s silly to demonize people who finance a car.

People need to stop worry about points and start worrying about building wealth. When I used credit cards years ago, I never used any points that I got. I had plenty of debt with nothing to show for it. Credit cards are the cigarette of the financial world and they will kill you financially if you use them. Another great show Racheal. You and Dave know exactly what you are talking about. I'd rather have a good chunk of cash in the bank then an 800 credit score.

Rachel, I have a question. My husband and I recently made a decision for our life that required a massive pay cut, the pandemic demolished his industry. We are doing fine, I'd like to be doing better and making more progress on our debt snowball. We are a single income family and are adamant about homeschooling our children, especially in today's society. I'd like to find a way to bring in some income to help. Id like a side hustle, not of the MLM variety as I'm not on social media, I have no education thats of value in the current state which we reside. I'm great at selling things and have been clearing the house out to earn extra money. So besides that do you have any recommendations for a SAHM like myself to bring in extra money? There are so many bogus work from home job sites, its easy to get lost in the scroll.

What about if you keep having medical expenses eat your emergency fund, so as soon as you pay off one debt, you have another for things beyond your control. I only have 7 thousand in credit card debt, but keep getting medical bills for things that come up. Kidney stones, foot surgery, eye surgery. These are things that I can't help, and we have terrible insurance. We will never get out of debt, and I can't work because of health issues.

Great job. Get a part time job. Once you have your number's its easy. Take 100% of that jobs income apply all of it to the problems. CREDIT CARD debts. Lowest hanging fruit first. Once you pay these off put that payment into others. In 6 months time passes. You will have quite a lot paid off. Your back to being human freeing your self up. Stay with a debit card paying for things up front. Your debts go away fast. You have cash flow again to do other things to have a simple life again debts free.

You pay off debt aggressively on their plan, so much so that the difference in interest isn't very much.

Paying off smallest to largest debt...sorry can’t agree with you there. Might work for people with low discipline then again that’s the type of person that would be in debt anyway. Paying off largest interest loans to lowest interest loans will lead to greater net worth in the long run. And it IS a math problem. Money = numbers = math. Simple
