Errmah Gerrd! I ended up using my eye liner to draw lines on my body so I was being accurate. Draw. Wipe off. Rinse. Repeat. Until FINALLY I have my side lines in the proper placement...and all the rest. Went through this half a dozen times (or more!) I am finally satisfied with my measurements having remeasured so many times until I measured reasonable differences I could work with. Oy! ... now to go scrub off all those black lines... Bye!!
Oh I really thought I had an original idea there and then felt weird about drawing on myself. Now I feel both relieved that I am not alone and disappointed that I am not the cleverest person here. It worked really well for me too. I have never measured myself this well before.
I had no idea there were so many measurements to be taken for a bodice. I already know this is a vid I'll have to refer to a million times. So helpful! I purchased a smart tape measure and it makes it so much easier to measure oneself.
Loved the I'm a little tea pot reference to find your natural waistline. The whole lesson was very helpful. I plan to watch it again doing the measurements as I watch. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this!!! I have been wanting to do a sloper and didn't know what the measurements were that were needed to draft. I look forward to the upcoming video. Now I have some homework to do!
Fantastic video Anastasia! Very helpful. I can’t wait for your next one on taking the measurements and making a sloper with it. You explain things so well and have such a pleasant manner 😊
WOW!!! I had no idea that there were so many measurements to take! Kind of blows the circuits! Thank you for explaining each part. I feel as though I'm in sewing college! This is wonderful!
I just watched this again for about the 3rd time. 😮 It's very good, informative and important. About a couple weeks ago I bought some muslin and I can hardly wait to make a sloper. I'm apprehensive but excited too 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Whoohoo! Sew excited for you! It's so empowering being able to pattern draft your own clothes. Don't worry if it doesn't fit perfect the first time. I think my first time it took me 6 iterations to get everything perfect (but I was making it purrrrfect too 😊). Thanks for watching! The video is here whenever you need a reference, and check out my others for help with drafting. Also, send me pics! I love seeing when I've helped people with their sewing.
I just received my copy of Helen's pattern making book and I am gobsmacked! I know that I'm going to need to take some of your sewing classes so that I can make sense of it all 🤔
Thank you for this video Anastasia!! I’ve been stressing about how to even measure myself and whether or not I was doing it right. This video totally beats the textbook I’m teaching myself from lol
Thanks for your video and enthusiasm. It is encouraging and delightful. Quick question: is the "across chest front" measurement (#15) the same as a high bust measurement?
Do we measure the breast measurements with a bra or no bra? If we use the bra, it may not be properly fitted. If we do not use a bra, the breasts may be laying too flat, lol. Hard to know what to do. Excellent video.
I started sewing literally 3 days ago and your videos have inspired me to learn how to make my own clothes. Are the measurements the same for men as they are for women?
Thank you so much! I went through this video and how to make the sloper bodice! Helped me a lot! I was wondering what was the brand of this particular dress form as my measurements are almost identical! 😮
Great video, thank you. My shoulders are really wide and I have to adjust all my patterns before I make them. But I usually just guess and add a bit (somtimes not enough and somtimes too much). That shoulder slope measurement sounds like it will be very useful.
This is awesome!!! I'll need help for the one back measurement, but I think I got them all! Now we'll see how the bodice comes out. Have you done one of these for a sloper pant/skirt? All my books from school and I can still never get the bottoms right!! Help!!!
Hi Anastasia I really love your videos 😊 I’m self taught and still have a lot to learn - I’ve been trying to draft a bodice/sloper to fit me - but I’m small in the upper bust area and shoulders - but have a big bust - so by the time I get to draw the armsycle area there’s no way I can do it because of my bust measurement 🤦🏼♀️ I don’t know how to deal with this issue 🤷♀️
This was an excellent guide, especially since you covered tips for how to measure yourself! I wanted to know if you also have a video for taking measurements for a skirt block/sloper and if not, if you have plans to make one to add to this series. Thanks!
Thank you and I am happy you found it useful. I do not have one for the skirt block yet but I was planning on creating one. I am actually working on creating an online academy for sewing and pattern drafting. I will start launching lessons in the next few months and I plan to do a huge in depth series of pattern drafting. Keep an eye out for it.
@@SewAnastasia that is awesome! I would definitely be interested in that series! One minor piece of feedback is that I am a really visual learner with ADHD and I found it hard to follow some steps because there wasn't something visually written on the screen for each step. (For example, writing on screen what measurement to reference). I end up replaying a lot of sections as a result which is fine, but if you were to include it in future videos it would help a lot! (Esp. since I pause the video while I'm doing it along with the video)
Thanks. I have the 2nd edition of Armstrong. I notice that this edition has a full length measurement from base of neck to waist. What is your recommendation.?
We took that measurement too. I think 🤔 You definitely want to take that measurement. So you can make sure your pattern is the correct length from neck to waist at the back & front.
Great question! Hummm let me think about that. I feel like asking a friend is the most accurate thing to do. You could pin a tape measure to a shirt in the spot & then look in the mirror with another mirror for your back?!
@@SewAnastasia Yeah, nah... I might have to go and have coffee with a friend... I'm onto the Basic Bodice now and I'm missing the info on why you've added 1/8" to the body length and why there's 1/4" taken from the across shoulder measurement. Did I miss something???
Hi and thanks for such a detailed drafting video. How would I go about most of the front measurements as someone who's had a double mastectomy and lots of chemo and radiation, which has left my chest flat with the left side slightly concave, and a "tire" above my waist. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I would do your measuring with the undergarments on you normally wear. Maybe that involves a special bra or top etc. Your sloper will probably make an A shape from your under arm to your fullest point at your waist. You will follow all of the normal steps but your fittings might be more complex and where it will truly become your shape.
Did I miss it, or have you not yet posted the video you said was coming where you took all the measurements and showed how and where you applied them to what became the pattern?
I would take your measurements again and have someone help you. Just to make sure you have them correct. Measure like 5 times and make sure you get the same number.
@@SewAnastasia OK, I won't give up. I'll try again. Ten hours in the sewing room just to end up with nothing but frustration can do something to a woman's mind (LOL)! Besides you're a joy to watch and learn from. Thanks for the reply!
So ... the dress form is, like commercial patterns, a B cup. When you measure over the shoulder down to the waist on a DD, do you skim the tape measure over the bumps, or do you follow the flesh? 😂😂😂
you use the bra you wear most often/fits you the best. measurements should be taken in your undergarments without clothes so the clothes don't add extra thickness that you don't have to your measurements
Do you have any tips on those of us who have had lumpectomies that altered one of our breast apexes center? Fortunately my tumor was high and I didn’t lose any of my breast but I did get a “lift”. They are now symmetrical and park in the garage perfect, just one headlight looks up. Lol
Hi, So when measuring I would take two sets of measurements for your front. One for the right side of your body and one for the left. Then I would draft two front bodices ( one for each side) and tape them together at center front. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching.
I would do it with a bra assuming you wear a bra with most of your clothes that you are creating. With that said, if you wear any shape wear daily I would measure yourself with that on too. Basically what ever shape you will be when wearing the clothes.
We measure that. Its the one from your neck to the underarm or neck to waist plus all the other measurements. I can't remember which method I did with this one right now.
What do you do if you have a belly so when you find your waist and tie an elastic band to it and it keeps rolling up? I can't get accurate measurements due to not knowing where it should sit.
is frustrating that you give numbers her then use the names of the measurements in the actual pattern drafting video. It seems unnecessarily confusing to not have the numbers and the names listed somewhere
Your welcome. I would wear the bra that you wear with most of your clothes so that way it will reflect the fit. I’ve had people wear binders who want a flat look & some that wear big push up bras because that’s their look but I would only do no bra if you normally wear no bra because it will change your measurements & shape. Hope that helps. Thank you for watching!
Why didnt u display the name of the measurement in the screen..u just display the numbers😮...iam from sreelanka..pls display the name of the measurement instead of displaying numbers😮
Um. . . .do you measure yourself with no clothes on? Or just undergarments? The first measurement, around the bust, would be very different with undergarments vs no 😆undergarments, esp. for some of those . . . ahem. . . whose body parts naturally head south.????
