A fun little trick I like to use is to bend the loops at the end of the brushes to a 90 degree angle and hang them off the lugs of my floor tom!

Great tip!!! I have been switching between sticks and brushes for many years and really never thought about it too much. I pretty much do the same things with either the floor Tom or bass drum depending upon the song and tempo. I also utilize other things that may be sitting next to my floor tom, such as a drum case😊

On some Jimmy Cobb recordings he switches so perfectly I’m thinking it’s a punch in. lol just kidding of course. He was a master and one of my all time favorites. Also, Jack DeJohnette makes some incredible switches on Chris Potter’s Unspoken album. That album? Holy cow! Get it if you don’t have it. Switching from sticks to brushes also is nice for bass solos. Then I can keep the intensity with less volume. Great lesson! FP

This is the most comprehensive video I've seen on this important and often overlooked subject. Well done! Is there a particular reason you prefer snares off for brushes?
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 11 дней назад
Thanks for the kind words! I prefer snares off because I like to hear the tone of the drum when I hit it. I sometimes use snares on when I need more volume.

Great Q, I already experiment with the same tricks. But what if you set up the floor tom with a little bit of angle towards you? Then the brush moves a way. So you need to put your floor tom straight. Its tricky ;-)
@drumqtips
@drumqtips 23 дня назад
Yeah the angle that the floor tom leans does make a huge difference if this method could work or not.

Just here for the part were you go from the sticks back to the brushes, that‘s what i always think is much more difficult to manage

Yeah that certainly is very tricky Dennis! Hope this helped.
@dennisblassnig9144
@dennisblassnig9144 22 дня назад
@@drumqtips yes it certainly helped a lot, just to see you having a completely different approach to that thing. It‘s like, i don‘t even need to practice the way you‘re doing it, its more like, why the heck didn‘t i come up with that solution myself. So thank you and really appreciate your lessons, especially when they are about that stuff, that normal music college teachers tend to forget.

Would you say that the majority of jazz drummers prefer playing brushes with the snares off?
@drumqtips

Not at all! I think most play with snares of factually. But many of my personal faves play with the snares off.
