In this video we demonstrate how to perform the Golfers lift technique, which is a safe way to bend forward with back pain, particularly early in the morning, or when lifting something light.
The Golfer's lift maneuver is a simple way to minimize low back strain, low back pain or low back injury, all of which can occur with forward bending.
The body mechanics for Golfers lift are relatively straight forwards. The key for the Golfers lift maneuver, is to allow the non fixed leg to raise up behind you, to counterbalance the forward bend, to minimize the stress on your low back and spine.
This is an extremely safe way to bend forward, but only works effectively for light weight items.
This is sometimes called the tripod lift or diagonal lift, but is well known by most of us as how golfers pick up the golf ball out of the hole on a golf course.
This technique should not be painful. If you are having severe low back pain, even with this lifting technique, consider consulting with a health professional.
