In this video, I review Mailchimp merge tags. Unlike tags, using merge tags gives you the opportunity to add customization and personalization to your emails. There are two types of merge tags - system and audience. System merge tags are provided by Mailchimp. Audience merge tags are provided when the client or customer adds their information via the signup form.
A system merge tag example is |RSS| whereas an audience merge tag example is |FNAME|

I have two primary lists in my FreshSales CRM. (1.) Leads/prospects and (2.) Current and recent clients. I need to sync BOTH lists from FreshSales into MailChimp but it appears I can only connect 1 list (or audience). My subscribe pop-up needs to go to my Leads audience and sync up to FreshSales. Is there a way to have both FreshSales lists to sync to MailChimp so all updates from emails sent in MailChimp will be tracked in FreshSales for ALL contacts? Thanks for any help you might give.

If you have a paid Mailchimp account you can create more than one audience list. I have no knowledge on FreshSales but I would suggest to look at Zapier as the go-between.

This video should help you get started with custom fonts - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2d4z7nmvHzU.html - however, use with caution, as some mail providers like Outlook, can not display custom fonts properly. My recommendation is to stick with fonts that come with Mailchimp.

Thank you so much Larry!!! Your channel is great and very helpful! I have a doubt though... I have a bilingual blog. When a person subscribe and his contact enters my database, I have a field that tells me the language their computer is configured. Now, I want to be able to use this information to send different emails. For exemple, if a person that speaks portuguese signs up to my email list, I want to send e-mails in portuguese, but if someone from any other country signs up, then I want to send an email in English. What would you suggest for me to do in other to be able to do that automaticaly? Thank you so much!!!

Sending a test mail will only show the merge code. You'll need to send a real campaign to yourself in order to test properly.

Hi there! 👋Thanks for the question. To my knowledge there isn't a global setting for emails created in a Journey. Since each email is designed and the content customized for each step of the journey, you'll need to add your NAME merge tag as well.

Hi Larry, it's not working for me at all (personalization). What happens when I preview the email, I'll get , but when I do the preview through the "life mode" I see all the names correctly. But the funny thing is, when I type in "Friend" in the default tab, everything is working fine. Until now I do have all the email names there, so it's not the problem. First I thought it's Safari, but Chrome is the same result. It's killing me now, because I lost like 5 hours to figure things out, but no results. At this point I can say, that I know the site by heart...any ideas on this one? I want to work with personalization. I don't want to work with "Friend", doesn't make any sense for me in this campaign...Thank you in advance! :)

Hi Alexey - in preview mode, you will see or if you switch on "live merge tag" you will see First names of your subscribers if they have provided a first name. The default tab "Friend" displays in place of a missing first name. It is best to send a real email to you as a test - not a test email.

Larry thanks for the good info on merge tags. You mentioned at the beginning you could customize as well as personalize. I think of customizing as creating a different message based upon subscriber parameters. Is this possible in MailChimp? For instance, can I add a customized text block for non-openers of last five emails, "we hope you're still interested in receiving our emails"?

@@LarrySnow Thanks again, Larry. Quick question: trying to Bulk Upload tags. Named the tag, and uploaded the .csv. Mailchimp keeps rejecting my file. The file only contains email addresses. The email addresses are already part of the Audience. I finally pasted them, but will need the bulk upload in the future. Any insights as to why MC is rejected the .csv bulk upload?

Hello! Thanks for the question. In order for the embedded form to display/appear on your website you must copy the HTML form code from Mailchimp, and paste the code into a HTML web page on your website. Now, if your website is built with WordPress or Wix, etc. then there are specific blocks you can use that will allow you to paste the embed form code. This video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5hozudBKfuY.html at around the 5 minute mark shows you how I embed the Mailchimp code into my WordPress website. If you can't embed the form code to display on your website Mailchimp also provides a link to your signup form which you can add to your website as a hyperlink and share out to social media.

I'm glad my videos have helped! The short answer is no - not with Mailchimp popup. There is a way to hide group options in an embedded form. You'll need to research WordPress plugins that may hide the group options for popups. Plugin developers like Yikes mailchimp plugin and their premium add-ons, and Mailchimp for WordPress (MC4WP) premium plugin is the two I would recommend to take a look at. There may be free plugins in the directory as well that could help.

Use *|DATE:X|* to show the current date in a given format. Replace X with the format of your choice. For example, *|DATE:d/m/y|* where d is replaced by the day, m by the month, and y by the year. The merge tag will display as the date the email is sent to the subscriber.

You'll need to send yourself the campaign email to verify the merge tags are working - or trust the merge tag when you preview.

I have one question that I am using free version of MailChimp and convertful where I have integrated them and created 2 sign up forms from convertful (1 lead magnet form & 1 sign up form on home page) I want to segregate these subscribers by the form they subscribe on and send them different emails but i am unable to segregate them on MailChimp as well as on convertful. Please suggest me how to do that in free version? ( I have a wordpress site)

Sorry, Sam I'm unfamiliar with Convertful. Try to find a way to add a separate tag to each the sign up forms. That way when the contacts are added to Mailchimp they'll have a specific tag (aka segregated).

Merge tags don't show in a test email. You'll have to send a campaign to you to test correctly. Give yourself a tag, then in the campaign, select your tag in the Who to send to option.

Hello - I'm glad the videos have been helpful. A couple things to look for and a couple of links for you to help fix. 1. Are you collecting the contact's name when they sign up with your form? 2. And do you have the merge field in your audience fields? 3. In your Welcome Email, ensure the merge tag is formatted properly - no italics or bold. 4. In preview mode, when you enable the live merge tag, do any names appear? (by the way, this is only to test, it is not something you save - if you don't see an option for this, then you missing the merge field in your audience fields) 5. When you send a preview to yourself of the welcome email, you will not see the first name. Instead, you'll see {{TEST FIRST NAME }}. I've been getting this question a lot lately with the cause most likely of users switching over to the New Campaign Builder. I recommend using the Merge tag cheat sheet, located here - mailchimp.com/help/all-the-merge-tags-cheat-sheet/. Then copying the merge you need and add it to a paragraph block in the new builder.

Hi Larry, I saw your video and discovered a few things. However, even if I am using the correct merge tag for the First name and it actually shows in the preview, when sent, it arrives without name! It just says "Dear !" (or now "Dear Friend" after your great advice). I am at the moment just testing the feature with a few friends (and myself) What I am doing wrong?

@@LarrySnow Unfortunately Yes to both questions. If not, it would be too easy. In preview / live I see the names, when sending the test emails to guys of my team (or myself) I either see nothing (Dear ...!) or worse: the *|whatever|* themselves (at the bottom of the page)

@@JuanMariaSolare It may not show in test emails. Try sending a campaign yourself and your team. Create a segment or tag of your team, then send the campaign email to that segment as a test.

Question: on minute 8:01 you show how you just select "Merge Tag" and it displays the fields on "Members Tags" the list of all the fields you've edited. I've edited the one I'm interested in using, but it still doesn't show up on the list under "Member Tags" it only shows email address. Could it be that this is only available for certain versions of mailchimp? I have an essential plan, is it possible that I would need to upgrade? If not, I don't know what I'm missing

I believe you're correct, however, you could add the merge tag manually and test it out with a test campaign, not the test email.

Kind of. You can use the code block or a text block (code side ) to copy the tweet embed code. However, there is no formatting, just looks like text with links out to the tweet (timestamp) or links within the tweet - URL or hashtags.

I just ran across this video as I am trying to fix my merge tags, however, when follow this video those options are not available to me. Only the email is there and I can't change anything. I've went through troubleshooting which was no help. MailChimp will only do troubleshooting for paid subscribers which totally sucks. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Hi Dana - this video tutorial was done with a free account. So you should have access to change existing audience fields or add a field. The only one you can't change is the email field. Can you add an audience field? In the email builder, when you click the Merge Tags drop-down list are any available to you (7:47 mark)?

Hi Amna, this is a common issue with test emails and merge tags - simply the merge tag will not be seen, instead you see . To properly test the merge tag you can use the preview mode, and switch on merge tag, and review contacts one by one to verify the merge tag is working properly. Your other option is to send the campaign to yourself - not as a test email - but the actual campaign email. What I do is to create a tag like demo or test and add the tag to email address in the audience list, then in the to field of the campaign email I select the tag I created for the test. When the testing is complete, duplicate the campaign email and send it to the whole audience/segment, etc.

You can re-organize the MERGE tags that are used but the message must remain in the footer of the email.

Not to my knowledge. You’ll need to create a PDF for each recipient. Maybe take a look at an integration like Zapier or Automate.io to be a go between with the data from Mailchimp to the PDF file.

Problem: When I use "Hello *|FNAME|* " in my campaign it works fine for Emails, but on facebook it shows up as "Hello *|FNAME|*". Hi, I would need some help from you. Let's say I want to send emails to all my customers and inform them about their shipment tracking number, how can I do that? Where should I upload the tracking number so that Mailchimp can capture the tracking numbers for each customers?

My best guess would be to check out Zapier or CloudPipes for a connection between KS and MC. If you have a paid MC account you can contact their support.

If you're emailing US citizens I recommend against it. CAN SPAM Act - www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/can-spam-act-compliance-guide-business#:~:text=The%20CAN%2DSPAM%20Act%2C%20a,out%20tough%20penalties%20for%20violations.&text=The%20law%20makes%20no%20exception%20for%20business%2Dto%2Dbusiness%20email and as such Mailchimp requires an email footer - mailchimp.com/help/customize-your-footer-content/

Yes. You name the merge tag anything you want within the limit of the number of characters.

Thank you. If I have an email address can I add a first name? I could not find that exactly. Say someone entered: John.smith@gmail. so I know the first name is John, can I edit that in? Thank you

If you have the First name as a merge tag /audience field for your list, simply edit the individual contact information to add the first name.
