This depends on your focal length. To prevent startrails I recommend the 500 rule: 500 ÷ focal length = maximum shutter speed. The longer your lens, the short you have to shoot. A 2-3 second exposure really only becomes a problem when you approach 200mm lenses or longer. Considering most astro/night photographers like wide lenses so that the sky is put in a composition with the surrounding landscape, this problem shouldnt worry you too much. Hope this helps!

@@rambopunk1989 Sorry, I misunderstood your question. I think that this depends on how active the northern lights are, which varies. Sometimes they move faster, sometimes slower, a bit like the wind making waves on a lake. 2-3 seconds seems pretty average, so most pictures you will see online are the kind of results you can expect for those speeds. Speeds that are shorter than a second are possible, but you would have to have really good conditions and a very fast lens to compensate.
