Today I'm enjoying the amazing birdsong on my local patch, namely the Sedge Warbler. Whilst they aren't hard to locate, it can be difficult to capture a clear photo! I love these birds and I'm always amazed how they can belt out their song for so long with virtually no rest! In this video I share my tips, techniques and camera settings as I'm shooting; I love this style of 'In the Field' video...so I'd love to get your feedback! I'm using my Canon 1DX (DSLR) and Canon EF 500mm f/4 Lens.
My equipment: If you purchase any of these items, that I use and recommend, through the Amazon links I receive a small commission which is massively appreciated and it helps me to keep creating new videos.

Good that we are reminded of the fact that you might spend 2 hours in the same spot. Casual viewers of your photos probably would think you just walk out with a big lens and job done. It's a great way to pass time in the country

Paul, thank for sharing! I’ve been a birder for last 15 years or so with 200 plus listed, but only been photographing them in last 5 years. Like you I love song birds but photographing these fast movers prove challenging. With that said one of my favorite bird in this part of world, Las Vegas is a black tailed knatcatcher. Mostly black and gray but very adorable…lol.

Personally Paul this is what I look for in RU-vid streams when it comes to wildlife, I think people learn more when they see real time changes being made to adapt to different situations whilst out in the field, the classroom type of videos are ok for equipment reviews, let’s see more! 👍

Great video Paul 👍. Just shows how difficult some birds are to photograph. Thanks for the tip re MF, I'll try that next time I am at St.A's trying to photograph the small stuff in the reeds instead of my camera focusing on the wrong things because I'ver been rushing to get he shot and stayed in AF 🙄!

Love your work and content Paul. I am always happy to open YT and see you have uploaded new video! Its great to watch you in action, and its also great to see you showing that its takes time and patience to get shots. Tip: Would really like it if you could show the information of your settings on the same background every time. Some times its hard to tell because of little contrast. Not that I copy, but see what you use for different light conditions. Keep up the good work:-)

Hi Paul I enjoyed this video very much, I’ve spent a fair bit of time photographing warblers myself and know that it’s not easy separating sedge warblers and reed warblers from foliage. I actually don’t mind too much is the bird is slightly obscured because that is natural.

Paul, surprised you haven't switched to mirrorless R5! How is the AF with the 500mm I and the 1.4x III TC? I'm looking at the same combination, albeit on a ageing 60D. My Mark IIn's 8mp isn't gonna cut it for birding detail sadly. Even 18mp is probably stretching it, and the AF on the 60D is less than ideal and high ISO performance isn't great either imho (but better than the Mark IIn obviously). The R7's high ISO performance and buffer are well, leaving a lot to be desired imho.
@PaulMiguelPhotography
@PaulMiguelPhotography 2 года назад
The AF with the extender attached suffers a bit, probably more noticable for flight shots. The R7 is interesting - I think it might suit a lot of people and more affordable too. I'd be wary of the noise capability too, but everyone is different.
@davepastern
@davepastern 2 года назад
@@PaulMiguelPhotography it seems that the R7 noise is better than I thought, albeit it's no R6. The buffer is weak, as I expected, but can be partly mitigated by using CRAW and feathering the shutter button. I got out yesterday to a local nature reserve and used back button AF for the very first time (60D, 300mm F4 IS and 1.4x mark I TC) - AF seems worse using back button to me, but I could be just imagining it. But either way, I lost a bunch of shots cos the combination just didn't want to focus. VERY frustrating. Sure, I'm a sucky photographer, but my shots are 100% being limited by my gear at the moment.
