This is awesome. Thank you! I know what you mean about getting a low power on the flash and how it can be tricky with a speed light. I learned the hard way when throwing treats at the dog. I got quite a few images with motion blur. Flash duration was too long because it was on high power. One thing other thing I learned is that dogs have very fast reflexes.

Add some corn syrup to the water in the ziplock to create more predictable and uniform drops. You’ll have to experiment to get the amount just right for your purpose. If you have access to glycerin, that’s even better than the corn syrup. You can also eliminate the soft box by getting some white cardboard; or construction paper taped to all of the walls and bottom of the inside of a medium size box with one side removed. That way your flash is all the light you need. Obviously the box bottom needs to be large enough for whatever water pan you choose to collect the water drops. I’d prefer a Pyrex glass pan myself since it’s see through so color isn’t an issue.

Hey Gavin! Hey, at 4:10 you say "The lower the flash power the more it freezes the splash." Why is that? And do full-size studio heads to a better job at freezing, as opposed to lower-powered speed lights? Or if you have enough light, would they be the same at their lowest power? Just curious. Thanks for the video.
@FU2Max
@FU2Max 4 года назад
Hi, I know I'm not Gavin but just to answer your question, the lower the power of the flash/heads the quicker the duration of the flash. Higher power the "flash" is longer.
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 4 года назад
Hi Michael. It's a sensible and simple sounding question that's tricky to answer in the same way. Studio flashes might be better, they might be worse. It depends on the technology inside. As for why less lower is better at freezing things. In your head replace the word power with duration. So now less power is less duration and assuming you set your camera to underexpose the ambient light to black, less duration = freezing action.

about flash duration to freeze the splash, if i understand, it is not recommended to use a gox v1 in high sync and camera in 1/1000sec ? why is a 400W needed compared to a godox v1 ? again V1 should be at full power so too slow to freeze ? why a 14-40mm ? what about a 105mm macro 1.8 at f11 ?
@GavinHoey
@GavinHoey 4 года назад
You don't need a 400ws flash, a speed light is perfect. Whatever you use, keep the power down for a short flash duration, even if it means upping the ISO.
