As someone who now has to wear Compression socks, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the bag trick !!I tried to put the C.Ss on & gave up after an hour of trying, three weeks ago, Finally, today I saw your vid & IMMEDIATELY tried it. So, THANK YOU AGAIN !! You're an angel !!
I am literally doom scrolling in tears due to severe bilateral edema. I've seen a vascular doctor, waiting for test results. All I've been told to do is continue taking my diuretic (increased from 25mg QD to TID) and wear compression socks. I've been dealing with on/off for 13 years, so I have a ton of different types of compression socks/sleeves. I can't get any on completely myself! I end up with bunching, bruising, and more direct pain along with the overall diffuse pain that comes with this level of edema. Sorry to unload on your video! I am at the end of my teether and needed to vent. 😢
Doctor told me I had to start wearing compression socks. Can’t get them on. The techniques you show are wonderful. Problem is none of the gadgets you demonstrated are available on Amazon. Everything is out of stock.
Any tricks for putting on compression socks when you can't bend? Asking for my Dad who is going to have a hip replacement. We just found your videos and they've been very helpful! But my Mom still needs to help him with the socks because ge can't reach..
5pm PST Very good video. Now. Once Ive gotten the sock on, what do i do about the way it painfully pinches my leg under my knee? I've tried many, many different brands and sizes! I'm at my witts end. Next im going to try putting strips of cotton under the to band! HELP!
Thank you for this! I’m interested in trying the rubber glove trick for sure. I tried to get help from an OT last year, and while she sized me for thumb splints, the only sock solutions she had were for trouble bending over, which I do just fine. It’s the thumb and wrist pain that make compression a struggle 😅 I ended up just getting socks with a 15-20 rate instead of the 20-30 I originally tried. But maybe with gloves I can still use those without such a risk of joints hyperextending!
This is a FANTASTIC video!! I’m just getting into compression hose/socks! My first attempts have been not only VERY painful but losers. I’m also a caregiver for my 83 year old sister who can but doesn’t make any effort to do much for herself. Your video has shown me tools that, while I doubt will incentivize her to do more for herself, will make my life easier by saving my very bad back! God bless you, my dear lady!
Oh! Millions thanks. I am a widow and some years ago, to take off my socks, it was my husband who take them off. But now … after seeing your video, I feel more secure cuz my socks are supposed to arrive tonight! I will have pleasant time putting on and off these stockings!
I have had a hell of a time getting those things on and off my wife. I remember way back when my wife's legs were really nice, like yours. Now both of yours would not equal one of hers. She has a lot of swelling problems. Hell of a thing to get those on and then realize I have punched a hole in them, trying to get them on her.
Any tips for an elderly person unable to bend down or flex the hips so high up who also has arthritis in hands and has difficulty placing the stocking on the device?
I need help with this, but I can't spend any more $ - the socks are prohibitive & the insurance coverage is laughable, as everyone reading this will know. What's the cheapest aid? I'd like to get re-usable gloves, but I feel like the manufacturer aids are crazy expensive. I have bad arthritis in both hands, so I'm only getting 15-20s, and even these are very difficult; but I have good strength and no problem leaning down. Someone at a compression store told me there's a simple, lightweight aid that folds up for travel, but they didn't have it.
With the Sigvaris, buy a second sleeve. When you pull off the sock with the device, leave it on the device. It is perfectly set to put the sock back on. This makes it so you can easily take breaks from the stocking and/or apply lotion, etc. as needed.
If you have diminished sensation in your legs, compression must be used with close monitoring in case of bunching or pinching of the skin. It’s important to watch for that because it can cause blisters or sores to develop. With regular monitoring of the legs while wearing the compression, it can be safe.
@@EquipMeOT I have neuropathy due to chemo treatments. I have worn compression socks for 24 years due to an auto accident and broken legs (blood clots). I have had no problems.
some of these things remind me of torture devices i find best for me is the ones that go over my feet with hole at toes can only use with toeless socks they are the only thing that heped me & cheapest...
Guuuuurl I’m a younger caregiver for my triplegic mother. I canNOT have that “sock stretcher tool” in my house without getting slammed on by my friends 😂 oh lawd
I Am Amazed, I'm ve Looked and Looked.. for this information... Being Toshed into this Wearing of Compression Stockings Only to Find Out HOW THE H.... DO I GET THE ON???? Thank you So Very Much!!!
It does work well for a larger leg! It's designed to be able to go all the up the thigh if needed. I found I was able to get it over a 23" circumference without issue.
I was thinking you can still get the small size garbage bags for like a bathroom garbage in most places and some come with the same type of handles on them- might be worth a try if you can’t find the plastic bags.
Just iron several plastic bags together to make yourself a long-term solution. Put the iron on the lowest setting, and use something like parchment paper between the iron & plastic. EZ PZ.
I just watched a video on just using one plastic bag with handles which worked pretty well. One demo you cut a hole in the bottom of it for the toe. Even if while your waiting for something like this to arrive. I'm going to have to wear compression socks every day now for vein circulation edema and struggling with my socks.
@@pamelamaylearmonth1662 Sorry that is going on for you. Hope the socks help. You can use a bread bag, btw -- just cut the end off so it's a tube. Put it over your foot & leg, then the sock over it, they pull the bag out.
@@StephanieSoressi thankyou..a bit if a sudden thing to get recently. The socks are helping a lot. I've got it almost sussed though still a struggle. I'll try that though. Dr is referring me to a vascular Nurse to get some kind of velcro wrap support instead. Although the socks will come in handy also. The pair I'm using have eased a little now. It's a strain on joints pulling on them!
I have very very tight compression stockings that would never ever go on like that.Even when 2 people were doing it they could hardly get the stockings on me. Also since I had hip surgery a few mos. ago I don't believe I am supposed to be bending over more than 90ty degrees of an angle. So how can I put those tough compression stockings on when sam not supposed to bend over & I have no one to put them on for me? Even in Rehab many nurse assistants could hardly get the compression stockings on. If they did get them on they had a tough time pinching the stockings without pinching ME to get them smith & on correctly. I ask because after 2 mos. my legs & feet R swelling up some & I'd like to put the compression stockings on, but can't do them. Any other ideas besides what U showed on this video that would would for an older woman who had total posterior hip surgery & should NOT B BENDING over more than 90ty degree angle?? I hope U can think of a way to put those tough stockings on. It's a battle for the nurses aids to do them.
Wow, this has been incredibly helpful. Thank you so much. Some of the linked products are no longer available which is unfortunate as the rigid device looked pretty handy to me.

As a person still fairly new to compression socks, I had purchased quite cheap ones from Amazon which were so tight I really couldn't work them at all. I do suggest everybody start with a light level of compression in order to get adjusted to them. Love the sigvaris socks.
Will a standard sock aid (the kind with a half tube and rope work for compression stockings or is the standard aid too big? I just saw this newer video and your older compression stockings donner video. Thanks for the extra tips and info about additional products in the newer video . Improved lighting makes it much easier to see what you're demonstrating in the newer video. Great job! Thanks! I'm watching your videos to prep for a TKA in a week.
Great video I have a lot of spider veins around my ankles it’s ugly and becoming more What to buy compression socks but don’t know what to buy what do you recommend please 🙏 😊
Thank you so much for this valuable information. I have struggled for years with compression hose and tried everything I knew about to assist me. Putting on the compression hose would exhaust me, then to take them off! I just left them on as long as possible. This is great!
Thanks Lindsay. I am going to try the rigid aid fo my socks. We use those at work too- long term care. As far as the fancy Sigvaris donner/doffer…I think training staff would be difficult…like a perceptual challenge! But, so smooth and protects fragile skin. Much appreciated, from a fellow OT. I appreciate your content.
First, make sure the sock is a proper fit. Too tall and it will roll, too tight and it will roll. Also, look for sock brands that have a grippy band at the top, they stay put much better. Some rolling and daily adjustment is to be expected but a proper fit will make a big difference.
I did a google search for the donner tool so far no luck I just start the need to put compression socks on it is so hard and I failed plastic bags are worth their weight in gold now with what grocery stores are charging for now 😢 please help me with advice I am on SSD and I need to watch my Pennie's
Which tool were you looking for? The most cost effective one is probably this: amzn.to/3FWaMTe It will last a lifetime and works well with most compressions socks.
@@EquipMeOT like I said this is very new to me so I really don't know what the best tool will be it the one that caught my eye was the donut looking one
A lot of communities have medical loan closets available, where people can "check out" medical equipment, like you would a book at the library. You can google medical loan programs in your area. Also, a lot of senior centers have medical equipment donated to them and then gift it to seniors who need it or they will loan it out. They may also know the local medical loan closets, so I suggest asking them. I hope you are able to find what you need.
I have tried the BSN medical compression aid (wire device) you mentioned and it works but I am tall and it was just to short to be of use. I ended up purchasing a Sigvaris Melany Donning & Doffing Aid ($119 Amazon) and it made a world of difference. It was a little expensive at $119 but the handles are long and adjustable. It takes me less than 2 minutes to apply the compression sock AND put it on. If you have to deal with compression socks, I would also recommend using the Truform Donning gloves (or some other compression gloves). These gloves are designed to grab the compression socks without tearing them. Hope this helps.
By the way, the Sigvaris as with the BSN device, the instructions state to push the compression sock on until half of the heel is sticking out. Personally, I push all of the sock onto the device leaving just enough room for my toes (about 1 inch). It still works just fine and no guessing where the heel is located and the heel will always be in the right spot when the sock is applied.
Thank you very much for such a useful video, please tell me is it true that stockings should be put on in the morning without getting out of bed, keeping your legs in a horizontal position without lowering them to the bottom?
Excellent video. I'm gonna try the plastic bag method or buy that tool instead of tediously inching up a mid thigh compression stocking, which took a long time and some discomfort to an elderly friend I was helping. Ty 💯
Much respect to RNs, OTs, PTs, assistants, Nurse aides etc. who do most of the "heavy physical" work in the medical field. I've worked as an NA for a short time, transferring, cleaning, feeding, caring for patients. Great channel you've got ✌️
Just turn the sock inside out except the toe box. Place them on the toe then pull the part that’s inside out over the forefoot without having to pull the whole sock from the toe. Its how we nurses would put an immobile patients TED anti embolism stockings. 🤷🏼♀️
That’s always a great option, but not always plausible for someone to apply it to themselves (which was the motivation for this video). When you turn the sock inside out you make the reach even longer for applying it and that’s really tough for most.
Yes good technique, used it at eirk many times, very helpful. I'd make one change to this advice( in video) I placed the plastic bag directly onto the leg/ ankle then use your instructions above 😊
Excellent info. Just started wearing Compression socks for work. I knew about the Grocery bag for my motorcycle "Rain Suits" and tried to use it with the socks. I'll for sure try your technique and see if it works better than what I tried. I didn't plan to spend this much time on RU-vid today, but I have learned a lot. Thanks
@@garywalters7881 It didn't work as well for me. the bag for my rain suits is on my foot when I place it in the suit and everything just slides across and the bag comes off at the end. With the sock over the bag you have to cut a whole in the bag, put your toes through that hole and the sock over pulling the sock up over the bag and then the bag out once the sock is on. I haven't tried it again and have gotten used to the other method of donning. Thankfully I've retired from nursing for the summer and won't be wearing them again soon.
@@rodlappin6147 I was just referring to the video where to sock goes inside the bag then you insert your toes in the sock. Then you pull the bag up which would just slide over the sock instead of pulling the sock with it, wouldn't it? How does the bag pull the sock with it?
@@garywalters7881 It's actually the bag going inside the sock. She does cut the portion of putting the foot in the sock and getting the toes out of the hole cut into the bag. Good luck.
Thank you so much for this video - exactly what I was looking for to show my dad so he can choose between the two different main option. Even demonstrating the sock brand he has.

Great video. Gloves are amazing - rubber ones with grippy palms. However....please god never ever use a plastic pag - just one nick and cellulitis is not far away.
