A continuation from the last two videos - this video will walk you though building up confidence at faster speeds by understanding how to apply pick strokes in a fast sequence, as well as connecting the major scale in a linear fashion, going up one string. Thank you for watching.

Another excellent video. I had been using a practice routine with all four fingers, (1-2-3-4) consecutively. My instructor discouraged that pretty quickly. He strongly encouraged using 3 finger patterns. This video, just gave me what i have been looking for. Again, another great video that cuts out all of the unnecessary noise and get to the heart of the matter and show that will clearly make a difference in fingering and especially alternate picking and right and left hand synchronization. Great job........

I've incorporated it in to a 2 string run starting at the low E 3rd fret (the 2nd major shape, not the first) working my way up and down the neck. Working in sets of 2 strings. Ex: starting with major shape 2 and then each neck position. Working the Low E and A together, Then the D and G and then the B and high E. Using the fingering for each shape for the appropriate string and frets. Using the alternate picking, and keeping the position of my right hand a key focus. Starting on the low E 3rd fret, i will play the first 3 notes of that shape, and the drop down to the A string and do the next three notes there. Then go back to the low E play the next three notes which starts on the 5th fret, and repeat the process, then back to the low E and 7th fret, and so on and so on. Once i've gone down and back up the neck on the low E and A, I drop down to the D and G strings, and repeat the process on the appropriate frets. I do this until I complete the entire neck of the guitar. It helps once you get things memorized, then i find it easier to focus on keeping it clean with good technique, starting slow and building up the speed.

I have only seen these three picking videos and I gotta say I like your approach. I have only ever thought about practicing the scales in the pentatonic box or 3 note per string for other scales. never thought of doing only one string. I'll definitely try that. I look forward to seeing other videos you do.

I wanna see this guy play something fast and difficult for example though. He's lessons has been useful so far, and I think I need some reinforcement of prove upon how you approach playing a song.

I think your videos are great and your picking technique is great. As a matter of fact, if a humanoid robot was programmed to do fast guitar picking then I think it would pick like you. Seriously. Everything you're doing makes sense. It's all mechanically sound and for about six months I've been trying to incorporate your technique. However, I do have to say that I'm astonished that you don't appear to mention pick slanting (as covered by Troy Grady). As far as I can tell, pick slanting is a key ingredient to all of this. I'm absolutely sure that you're pick slanting. I mean, you must be! However, I have no idea if you're an upward pick slanter, a download pick slanter or a two-way pick slanter.
@MyguitarteacherCa
@MyguitarteacherCa 8 лет назад
hi David. sorry, but no i don't slant at all. i'm completely perpendicular to the string - both from string to body, and from bridge to neck. i never like the gliss sound that i got from a slant, plus i like the consistency of feel from both the up and downstrokes when there is no slant. i know it's weird, but it's how i like it. :) guess i'm more of a robot than i thought, lol. cheers!

Hi Everyone, Old7StringGuy here. I'm trying to raise some funds to improve the quality of my videos. If you've found any of my vids helpful, could you please consider donating 50 cents to my Indiegogo campaign (link is at the beginning of this video). All proceeds go direct to upgrades (camera, lighting, sound, etc.) Thanks for all your help.

How to avoid straining the wrist ? I found that using this technique gives me more stability and speed but strains my wrist since it keeps rotating through it all. Before , i picked by rotating the joints from big thumb and pointer finger, which doesn't strain the wrist at all but is less stable and much harder to build speed. Thanks for the videos.

I've watched all three of th videos in ur picking series, and thoroughly enjoyed th content. I have a question regarding picking technique. How does your technique change in regards to playing cords? Specifically 2/3 note power chords/chord inversions, and 4/5/6/7 note chord shapes. I know your subscribers would be just as grateful to learn how you teach these applications, as well as creating seamless fluidity changing between the strumming and soloing techniques.
@jlyonia
@jlyonia 11 лет назад
Hi - Firstly thanks for posting these. Quick question - do you change your pick grip much when playing non-shreddy stuff? For instance, do you use this same pick grip approach for strumming chords or do you change your grip dynamically on the fly depending on what you're playing? Cheers!

Hey, great video! Is there some kinda diagram or chart for this pattern? Ive seen the charts for pentatonic scales across the strings which was really helpful, I was hoping there'd be one for this too? Thanks man

Is it better to always alternate? Economic picking feels a lot more natural for me and I have to really force myself to strictly alternate and it gets quite difficult.
@MARLONdaman
@MARLONdaman 4 месяца назад
You start with Economy picking to get the feel of your scale then you move into alternative picking with deliberate practice! NOTICE HIGH HE IS CHUNKING IT! THIS MEANS HE BREAKS DOWN THE TECHNIQUE INTO SMALL PIECES!👈🏿👀 ONCE YOU “SLOWLY” GET THE TECHNIQUE DOWN; YOU THEN WORK THE TECHNIQUE WITH A METRONOME WORKING UP TO YOUR SLOWEST SPEED TO WHERE YOU PLAY SLOPPILY MESSING UP. RECORD THIS IN YOUR “GUITAR JOURNAL”. THEN GO AND PRACTICE 4 TIMES AT YOUR SLOWEST SPEED 4 TIMES. STOP! PUT YOUR GUITAR DOWN. MAKE NOTE IF YOUR MISTAKES AT WHAT FRETS, FINGERINGS, AND WHAT BEAT OF YOUR METRONOME. MOVE ON TO ANOTHER AREA OF GUITAR OR JUST PUT THE GUITAR DOWN FOR THAT AND DO SOMETHING ELSE! COME BACK THE NEXT AND DO YOUR GUITAR WARMS AND DRILLS THEN WORK ON THOSE MISTAKE AREA ONE PIECE AT A TIME, 4 REPETITIONS A PIECE. NOTE ANY MISTAKES IN YOUR GUITAR JOURNAL. WORK ON EACH MISTAKE 2 TO 5 MINUTES AT 4 REPETITIONS. WRITE YOUR MISTAKES IN YOUR GUITAR JOURNAL! ONLY WORK EACH PIECE UP TO 5 MINUTES. PUT DOWN GUITAR OR WORK ON ANOTHER GUITAR AREA FOR 5 MINUTES. SET YOUR GOALS AND GUITAR PRACTICE FOR UP TO 15 MINUTES PER DAY AND GRADUALLY RAMP IT ON TO 30 MINUTES PER DAY DEPENDING ON YOUR GOALS AND SCHEDULE. THAT GUITAR JOURNAL WILL ASTOUND YOU AT THE PROGRESS YOU ARE MAKING! 👈🏿👀👍🏾

Can you apply this on every string, say starting with the low E work up and down the neck, and then drop down to the A, then D, etc etc ?

yes, just remember your hand placement from my first video and you should be fine. good luck!!

Hi how about sweep picking? Do i still go diagonally when going to string 1 to 6 or vise versa? And all fingers of right hand closed and supporting the right index finger?
@MyguitarteacherCa

it's up to you - i actually sweep the same way i pick (as you describe). but please decide for yourself what sweep technique works for you, ok. all the best :)

I'm still trying various methods for sweeping but as for alternate picking your technique really suits me. at the 1st hour of practicing I can see results :) thanks! you don't know how much of a help this was!

Hi! I have a problem when switching string after an upstroke. I can easily switch to next string after a downstroke, but when doing the same after upstroke I always hit the string I was playing (if i'm moving from lower to higher). Could you give some advices on that kind of problem?
@Lamottecolin
@Lamottecolin 6 лет назад
The wrist action is rocking so that the pick glances of the strings at the bottom of a curve ,if it is a straight up and down motion the pick would get stuck between strings.Percussion such as drums you rock your hands and feet to get bounce (multiples) guitar as percussion you are using a fine rocking action glance for multiple.

When y said there is guys that plays hundred times faster than y did, yes there is, lets say Yngwe malmsteen The guitar God. But for me it is not about how fast y can be, When I watch y or Yngwe I can loose the will to play, im not so good, im on an average level, and the sound is most important to me, fast is cool yes, but if it,s not a melody it doesnt matter if y play faster than the light. I practice fast when im warming up. Playing blues slowly these days. Playing good slow is also diff
