Tretinoin can be used with care, and most dermis don’t tell their patients how to properly use it. Wait 30 MINUTES after cleansing face to use it to allow your normal oils to come back up. This helps protect the skin. Use ONLY 1/2 of a pea size for your entire face. I use it twice a week, have used it for over thirty years, am 75, and have terrific, smooth skin. I use 0.05. Great video. Just remember: wait 30 minutes.
@@jonesb80jr You can do that to help buffer it. Someone people do a "retinol sandwich" and put moisturiser, retinoid, moisturiser. I think it really depends on your skin, your tolerance levels and skin sensitivity. You can phase the pre-moisturiser out when you've used for a while, probably. I personally use a small amount of the Cosrx snail power mucin, it helps buffer and contains ingredients that help soothe the skin.
Good video! I also follow Dr. Dray and she says that if a retinol is working for you sometimes there is no need to “upgrade” to a higher strength not everything is about just trying to get the highest strength/percentage of a product.
Yeah I was relieved hearing this when I found out because I don't want to use something strong or super strong when I don't actually NEED to. My problem is acne (I'm not sure if hormonal or not), clogged pores, some discoloration/superficial scars from said acne, and some sensitivity. It's hard to not want to try things other people are just because you want their results 😬 I'm trying to start from the beginning and work my way up as needed. It'll take years but I don't see any other way.
@@CoffeeandtyposI found that I got almost no irritation with the dermalogica clearing oil and the new ELF advanced night retinoid serum. I like the dermalogica but wouldn't spend the money again 😅 Edit: I have gotten to the point where I can use the clearing oil every night. The elf is a little stronger based on the ingredients/percentages. I am currently playing all my retinoids any percent speed run because my dermatologist wants me to just swap to tret 😢
@lelalu101 I appreciate this and the update! It seems tret is something that is a quick go-to 'solution'. This bugs me because it's not for everyone, yet some drs rather spend less time getting to know your skin and just want you out the door (which is how it seems sometimes)
@@Coffeeandtypos while I absolutely agree that it does seem to be a go to Too Often, I am a bit of an odd bird. I have PCOS acne so she also upped my Spiro and added a clindamycin/Benzoyl peroxide topical as well. It was the last thing we discussed due to my deep scarring and extremely pale skin. If everyone got that kind of care we would probably go to the derm as an earlier option than spending thousands on skincare 😤💕 I might ask to switch to adapelene depending on how the next few months go!
I'm 53 and I use tretinoin for my face since many years. For the last 6 months, I began to apply it in a very thin layer around my eyes and it goes well. I use retinaldehyde for my neck because it's less irritating. Let's mention that I use retinoids every other day, alternating with a repairing barrier routine like niacinamide and copper peptides.
@@scienceislove2014 every night I use the Vichy Mineral 89 Probiotic Fractions serum that contains niacinamide. The night I don’t use tretinoin I also apply the Buffet Copper Peptides from The Ordinary. For hydration I like the Cerave night cream wich can be replaced by the Cicaplast B5 Balm if my skin is irritated.
@ geeganbeflyy, It does help with fine lines and also brown sun spots. Also, it's less irritating than Tretinoin. I've been using 3 percent for almost 4 months and I notice a real difference. I'm 67 yrs old
I need to try it because I've had fine lines for like 10 years now. I know it's not magic and it will take time. Which Adapalene product would I search in Amazon?
@@neilfpvHi there! Adapolene is what you'll need to look for. Differin is a brand name. You can find 1 percent over the counter or you can get 3 percent adapolene with an Rx from your Dr.
I'm starting to use the one from Paula's Choice that has 0.3% retinol and 2% bakuchiol. The retinol serum from Versed Skincare is very good for beginners, this was my first retinol and I really liked it, it also has bakuchiol. Thank you for your reviews ❤
@@chaoticintrovert4818 Hi. It's too soon to notice changes in the skin since I have not been able to use it as often, due to the fact that the temperatures are very high and my skin has been more sensitive. But I like the product, it has a good ingredient composition.
I just ordered the Versed cream in a tube for my body….the guy who had a video on it is 60 and looks 30. I need it for sun damage on my shoulders, and can’t wait to see how it works. Funny…I have no sun damage on my face.
If you were to recommend a simple skincare routine for a 61 year old combination some dryness. Wrinkles on my neck that i really hate. What would it be. I love watch your videos your a very smart young lady.
I started using retinol for the first time about 3 weeks ago. I started off with the cerave resurfacing encapsulated retinol because I was nervous about the transition period. I have had no reactions and am now using it every night so I am looking to step up the game to a retinal once I finish this bottle!
I actually went through 2 bottles of this. I liked the texture and product itself, but I didn't notice it did anything to my skin. So I'm looking to try something else. I recall Differin Adapalene making me itch severely (like a week+ of itching), so I avoided it ever since. But I recently found out about the AcneFree version and might try that. It doesn't help that I can't recall if I even used the first Adapalene correctly (since I didn't know much about skincare then, and don't recall my doctor telling me how best to use it), so I guess I'm going to restart the process. 🤔
Are you sure that you are not seeing any difference? I also thought that and then I started getting so many compliments on my skin. Honestly, I've tried so many retinol/tretinoïn product and the Resurfacing Retinol from CeraVe is truly the best retinol for sensitive skin. I don't even need to use a moisturizing cream with it!
@@revenge217 I am looking for the same info as you are. I am 54 so for mature skin, no acne.. I accidently bought the purple cerave renewing one instead of the blue resurfacing one.. I should be starting it tomorrow. Is the adaptelene stronger than retonols?
I didn't know much about adapalene until yesterday (thanks to dr gray❤) and I now understand much better the transition from one product to the next. I didnt know that la roche product was adapalene and I am tempted to try it. I have controlled rosacea, thanks to several ipl sessions my skin has now become quite oily and much healthier, and I have used for several years the eucerin q10 cream and it has been great... But I think its time I jump to the next step and try the retinal from avene or maybe even try the adapalene from la roche... A decisions... I was recommended to keep using every day in the morning my ivermectine cream to control the rosacea and it has been very good. Once you jump to your 30s you must step up the game! Thank you for this very educational video ❤
Great video, thanks!! I’ve been using adapalene for 2 years now, and have seen much improvement on my acne-prone skin. Since I’m in my mid 30s, I’d like to up my anti-aging game, so I was just wondering if I should use retinal or tretinoin, and you gave the answer😊 thank you!
Very helpful, TY! I have developed super sensitive skin in my 60s. CeraVe’s vitamin C serum gave me an invisible chemical burn that kept burning for a good 10 days after I quit it! So I have to be super careful. I’m going to try the Olay product you mentioned. I’ve been using their Night Recovery Cream and love it, so hopefully I’ll love the retinol and peptides cream, too.
I wish there was more information about tretinoin affecting dry eyes. I used it twice and it made wearing contacts harder already, plus my eyes were super red. It sucks because I think it could really help my acne
my eyes are so dry ever since getting lasik last year. The nights I use my tretinoin my eyes get sooo insanely irritated it's insane (and I don't even apply to the eye area.) I'm switching to Altreno soon to see if there's any improvement !
You can start with a weaker product then sl8wly move up. I am 76 have very fair del7cate sk7n but uave worked up to Tretinoin even on my eye area, neck, upper chest...I use it on the backs of my uamds lower arms to elbow and under arms because some wrinkling was showing up there. Im stopping there those are the areas exposed to the view of others.
Hello ! I’m 24 and have been using Adapalene since I have 14 for acne. I’ve seen so many progress but today I still have some adult acne and I want to upgrade to the next level and treat even better my skin to prevent signs of aging. I was wondering if I should go for a tretinoid prescription or a retinal (with less irritation) ? I don’t know which one would be the next level after Adapalene to treat even better my adult acne and treat signs of aging Thank you very much 💗
Not sure if you're using the 1 or the 3 percent adapolene. If you're using 1 percent, you can move up to the 3, however you do need an Rx for it. Adapolene is going to be a better choice for the adult acne since that is what it's main purpose is. It does also help with aging skin. I use the o.3 percent and it's equivalent to 0.5 percent tretinoin with way less irritation .
Hello. I am 41 years old and i have hyperpigmentation and i want to ask, woild you recommand for this specific problem tretinoin? If so, should I start in the summer? What about retinols with low concentrations? For hyperpigmentation, what would help best? Thank you in advance for your response. 😊
I highly recomend the Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol lotion. Great for dry sensitive skin. Question, if your skin reacts poorly to adapalene, would Tretinoin cause an even worse reaction? Or is their a chance your skin may not react as bad to the tretinoin? I have wondered if it is because over the counter adapalene is in a gel.
Why all retinods suddenly stop working? I used many brands and types and they work in few months then after that they make my skin so irritated. I can't use them long term. What baffles me is why do I get irritation after using them after months and not when I was still beginning to use them?
Should we be concerned that the adapalene in differin and La Roche has paraben? This is a product that will be used every day so just concerned a bit. Thank you!
Can someone tell me if oily skin can use retinol? Also if there’s a specific one for dry skin in winters? If yes to both then please suggest for both oily & dry skin
Is Cureology the only way to try Trentinion without getting a prescription from a dermatologist? And is the amount of trentinion in Cureology even worth it for anti-aging?
Hi, so im struggling with hormonal acne for months and at the same time , me and my husband are trying to get pregnant.. any skincare advice on what to use. Thanks
Thank you for this thorough and informative video! My skin is super sensitive and super dry, so as much as I want to try retinol I'm still on the fence about it. Do you think there can be irreversible damage to my already fragile skin if I try retinol and then stop it? 🤔
hi what if i have mature skin and also has very oily and so acne skin with a lot of blackheads and some minor inflammation. can i use adapiline and retinol together?
When I did a search, it showed that 0.5 tretinoin and 0.3 adapolene work exactly the same. Retinols do not work as well imo. You'll need an Rx for 0.3 adapolene, but you can get 0.1 strength over the counter
@@dr.jennyliu I think the question was do you think they will ever sell tretinoin over the counter like adapalene (which used to be a prescription but no longer is).
I love your videos they are very informative. I have been using medik 8 retinal in 2% concentration which is their highest strength. I also use Paula’s choice bha and aha exfoliants every day. Unfortunately, I still have a problem with acne or bumpy skin. Do you have any recommendations? As to what else can I use for my mature skin?
Can you tell us if we must use tretinoin before bed. I heard that tretinoin is deactivated from indoor lights as well. This includes light bulbs. I know it is deactivated by the sun but not sure about indoor overhead lights. Can you please clarify. I love your chanel
May I use both tretinoin and Adapalene on alternate days? I think Adapalene works better on dark spots but it didn't do so much for acne. I want to use Adapalene as dark spots treatment. Please reply 🙏
Why did retinol give me orange peel texture and now these large pores connect to form wrinkles? My skin hasn’t recovered from this damage. Hundreds document damage on Reddit and other beauty forums. Can this be fixed?
If going on a Hawaii vacation when I"ll be out in the sun all day hiking, etc.,(not sunbathing), should I stop the nightly retinol cream? I will be wearing a big hat and will try to be vigilant in reapplying sunscreen every 2-3 hrs.
You can get it from China without a prescription but I don't know if the quality is good. I used tretinoin from China but I used it for hyperpigmentation and it didn't work and yet most people say I look young so I guess it was working with anti aging.
I’ve been using the Neutrogena Rapid wrinkle cream on my face for retinol for the past 3 yrs (I’m 31) and now looking to buy the Medik8 crystal Retinal. Could you advise which one I should start with? The 3 or 6..? Thank you
hello dr.jenny will I get the synergistic effect if I use benzoyl peroxide in the morning and adapalene at night, or do I have to use them at the same time ?

Toner - COSRX Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner 150m 2. Serum - Some By Mi Propolis B5 Glow Barrier Calming Serum Or The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrator, 30 Ml 3. Retinol - Olay Night Cream: Regenerist Retinol 24 Moisturiser, 50G
Hello Dr. Jenny, how are you? I just have one question, is it ok to use a moisturizer that contains "Green Tea Extract" with epiduo? ( I'm asking because theoretically green tea is an antioxidant, and epiduo contains benzyol peroxide and i'm not sure if it ok to use them together). Please let me know what you think, and thank you in advance!:)
Very helpful information. I have been using and tolerating retinol moisturizers (both the neutrogena and Olay that you recommended). I just started tretinoin gel .5% and seem to be tolerating well. I am applying gel straight to dry skin and following with basic moisturizer and eye cream every other night. As I transition to daily application, Is it safe/beneficial to add back in a serum before the moisturizer and could I use the Olay moisturizer with retinol and peptides over the tretinoin?
I reacted with breakout and redness & burning skin to the Cerave SA cleanser and Moisturising Lotion (dry to very dry skin)… I have sensitive skin and some pimples every now and then. Should I stay away from the Cerave Retinol serum since I haven’t reacted positively to the other Cerave products? I’m thinking about using the La Roche Posey you mentioned or The Ordinary Retinols Granactive Retinoid 2% Emulsion… Anyone got some tips? I’m really new to skincare haha
the cerave cleanser you mentioned does have salicylic acid which is an active, and is used for exfoliation, therefore if it is used on a regular basis on the face it can be irritating (i’ve dealt with that same issue). This specific cleanser i belive is best used just on the body, especially during the winter, i used to get a couple dry patches on my arm that this cleanser paired with a nourishing moisturiser really helped with. So even though i’m not an expert i don’t think that the cerave retinol would be specifically irritating because of this especially as long as you make an effort to maintain your skin barrier healthy (by moisturising regularly and wearing sunscreen daily, but if not, at least the day after you’ve applied the retinol). Hope this helped! :)
SA is an active ingredient that dries out the skin. I'm not an expert but I'm assuming SA is your problem and not the brand. I've found from experience that the SA cleanser is best for oily skin and that CeraVe's hydrating cleanser is better for dry skin.
I was using tretinion 0.05% for almost a month now and it shows good development to my skin? My cystic acne are not too active anymore but there are few still coming out. Is it possible if I switch to adapelene?
It just feels so useless watching videos like this as a Canadian. I drive across the border; I go into a Walmart or a Target or any drugstore, and Adapalene is right there on the shelf. But here at home, it’s nowhere to be seen. Because apparently no one can be bothered to take on those wussies at Health Canada to go through whatever process is necessary to get this stuff on the shelf, or even over the counter. Right now, it’s prescription only. And who can be bothered to go back to their family physician or a dermatologist every few months to get a new prescription. We don’t have enough doctors here, it takes months to get an appointment. But I suppose I sort of get it, with only 40 million people here, we’re just not that big a market. So who cares about Canadians ? I suppose we’re lucky to get whatever is available on the shelves here. We’re just never going to feel like anything other than the bastard at the family reunion…
I’m using 0.025 tretinoin every other night, for a week now, so far just a bit of itch and tingle but nothing so far. Tempted to use it every other night lol. Hopefully I notice changes soon. P.s I have oily skin a and I put a cream barrier before applying it, so maybe that’s why it isn’t irritating
Trust me you are doing a good thing by applying a moisturiser first. You will see a smooth ending glossy to touch effect on skin soon after application but if u don’t have acne then the only change u see will be long term and will be in the form of slow aging. Don’t use it every night unless you have used it forever. With retinal more application is not the key, it’s the routine that matters
