When it comes to choosing the right trail running shoes for you, obviously it's a very personal thing. Everybody's feet are a different shape, every shoe fits differently and as trail runners we all run on different types of terrain and underfoot conditions. I'd always recommend visiting a good running specialist and trying on lots of different brands and models to see what fits your foot shape the best. Unfortunately, this is getting harder and harder to do these days with a lot of the running shops disappearing from the high street. Because of this we've put together a handy guide to help you out when it comes to picking the right trail running shoe for your needs, hope you find it helpful!
Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

My tip is to look at the sizing in CM/Centimeters. That's generally a more accurate indication of atleast the length of the shoe.

Best advice for the right size is to always go with the size in centimeters. I can't remember the last time it didn't work out for me. Alternative the same US size. It seems that UK size is often incorrect. Sizing is very different form brand to brand. I have everything from EU size 44 to 47 1/3, all the same size in centimeters or US size. A very informative video Loyd, sizing is often not that easy

Been running local trails in the Hoka Zinal which I picked up in the sale for around £80. Very much a cut back road to trail with low stack but by no means uncomfortable. I’ve just ordered a pair of the exodus ultra 2s following your review as I need something for Portsmouth coastal marathon at the end of the year that will be comfortable over long distance and will cope well with both road and off road

Great tips here Lloyd. Unfortunately for me, I have rather big feet, 48+ in EU sizes and live in country with poor choices with brands and sizes. And I don't dare to order online because I'm not sure will it fit right. It is crazy that even within one brand sizes and fits vary so much. And in Bosnia we don't have running specific shop so I could at least get all the information first hand. Great video as usual!

Worth considering when it comes to weight...Trail often involves wet surfaces. Then maybe the weight doesn't matter so much, more the draining properties. All shoes pick up weight in some way when they are wet, and 50 grams of weight difference between two shoes does not matter so much when they are wet.

I was locked into Speedgoats for years but feel much more willing to experiment these days but only if a shoe is on offer. One thing to remember, if you do get a good shoe for the deep mud, it's worth cleaning them properly, not only so the outsole works properly but also they will last for years, as you tend to do much lees volume in them and the terrain doesn't ear them as quick.

Wow Speedgoat, me too. Found the Speedgoat 4 the best shoe I've ever had. The 5 though was actually disappointing. Feel that the midsole had lost all its delicious impact absorption. The 5 actually felt like a budget version. I'm now stuck on what to wear next as they're not cheap. Thoughts?

I’m in the market to find a trail running shoe to start trail runs. Where I live there’s absolutely no shops offering any sort of specific running shoes and it a long drive to one wear I can try before but, so I’ll be buying online. Really useful tips Loyd, thanks for this. It's really tricky with width as I sometimes find that some wide versions of running shoes are not wide in the right places. I've got the ultra glides in wide but the midfoot is still a bit narrow

This is a great heads-up! My wide-feet really makes it challenging. I’ve tried the wide size Hoka Speedgoat 4’s and so far it’s been good but my toe-off on this shoe is not quite there. Also strains my lower calves, prolly not the shoe, but I’m willing to try something new. I’ve been told Altra and Topo Athletic are great naturally wide toe box shoes. Finally ordered my first Topo athletic UltraVenture 3’s Crossing fingers 🤞this will be a better trail shoe experience.

Topo mtn-racer 3 (not 2) are my favorite wide toe box trail shoe. They fit really well, grip well, and I use them for most of my training and shorter races. But for longer ultras > 100 km I still use hoka speedgoat 5 wide fit for the cushioning and with those I have to tape up my little toe or it gets shredded. ultra venture 3 not so much room for the toes and the tread is very shallow, only good for easy trails.

Hi Loyd, greetings from Medellín Colombia, I'm a fan of your reviews and I wanted to ask you a couple of questions: 1 I bought the Peregrine 12 in my normal size (8.5 US), but they were too tight. In your opinion, should I buy the Xodus Ultra in 8.5 or should I take a larger size? 2 At the adjustment level, is there much difference between the Xodus Ultra and the Xodus Ultra 2? I ask because people have complained about the Xodus Ultra's fit level and bungee cords.

When trying a new shoe I order 3 pairs, my usual size, 1/2 size up and 1/2 size down, then return 2 or 3 pairs. My main problem is toe width, very few shoes are wide enough in the toe box.

Pretty much all trail running shoes are neutral in structure because the trail environment is a lot more forgiving, less impact than the road and less repetitive! 👍 My advice would be to go along to a running specialists that stocks a lot of different trail shoes and try on as many as possible. If you can't do that, maybe have a look at some of the Asics trail shoes because you'll be use to the brand from your road running shoes 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏 Loyd

It takes a lot of trial-and-error (i.e., some wasted money on shoes you'll not wear often or ever again) to find the right running shoes, whether they are for the trail or the road. By doing a lot of research (reviews and user comments), I've been mostly successful with the shoes I've acquired but there are always a few that don't work out. Every person has his or her unique foot shape and personal preferences for how they want the shoes to feel and the unique requirements they have. My feet are a little wide on the forefoot and standard width or even a little narrow in the mid-foot and the heel, so they are a bit triangular shaped. Sometimes I have to wear the wide EE-size from some brands but, most of the time, I'm fine with the standard size (TTS 8 US). For trail shoes, I've found the inov-8 and Hoka shoes to be on the narrow side in the forefoot area but I've been able to make them work. Saucony shoes have all worked out great for me in terms of fit - especially in the forefoot area. I have two pairs of Xodus Ultra, Endorphin Edge, and just got the Peregrine 13 and they all fit me great. I plan to add the Xodus Ultra 2 as soon as it becomes available. It's interesting because Saucony's road shoes (Endorphin Pro 3 and Speed 3) feel narrow in the forefoot to me and aren't all that comfortable to me, even when I go up half-size, which makes them a little too long. They feel so different from the aforementioned trail shoes, even the midsole foam. For me, Saucony's PWRRUN PB and PWRRUN foams feel perfect for the trail but I prefer others (Adidas's Lightstrike Pro, Nike's ZoomX, ASICS's FF Blast+, and NB's FuelCell) for the road. Not sure why this is but all that matters is what feels the most comfortable and "right" to each individual runner. For me, it's Adidas Adizero line for the road and Saucony for the trail with a few from Hoka (mainly the Mafate Speed 4 which I really like) and inov-8.

Question: I overpronate, so looking for a stability focused trail shoe, which would you recommend? I use the Guide 15 wide for road running.
@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure Год назад
Road running shoes and trail running shoes are very different when it comes to the level of structure Praveen. The road is a harsh, repetitive environment and the trails are a lot more forgiving. Because of this pretty much ever trail shoe is a neutral shoes so you won't find one with a medial post support like your Guides. I woukd suggest going to a running shop and trying several pairs on if you can. If you cant do that then the Peregrine 13 or the Xodus Ultra from Saucony are both good trail shoes. Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏😊 Loyd

@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure Год назад
Thanks Peter, glad you enjoyed the video. I'd always recommend going into a running shop and trying on as many trail shoes as possible and seeing what fits you best. If this isn't possible, the Flight Vectiv has a Carbon plate in the midsole that you probably don't need. The Speedgoat trail shoe is very popular but it's also deeply cushioned so you'll have less ground feel. I've got a review of both above shoes on the channel. I'd also recommend checking out the Saucony Xodus Ultra 👍 Hope this helps and thanks for watching the channel 🙏

@Run4Adventure
@Run4Adventure 9 месяцев назад
The Mafate Speed 4's outsole is definitely a bit more grippy because of the Vibram megagrip. As far as mud goes there's not a lot in it but maybe the lugs on the Mafate do give a bit more traction?
