An easy way to sterilize jars is to wash and rinse well then put in a preheated oven at 220 degrees for 20 minutes. That’s all it takes to sterilize plus hold them at temp without taking more stove top space. Thanks for the recipe!! I’ll try it

Thanks Old Man. I just got into canning this summer and I will try a batch of your Okra Pickles. Just a thought on getting the most use of the space in the jar as you load the Okra: I think you could get more in the jar by alternating the Okra bottom up to top up.

If you load 1/2 the pods upside down and then the rest, load them right side up. You;ll get more in every jar. Add brine but do not use butter knife to debubble. It makes micro scratches and increases the chance of breakage.

Love your southern style of communicating! I'm a raised Mississippian living in Argentina, and I just found okra after being deprived for some years! (You can imagine the joy!) I wanted to ask you, I cannot find mason or ball jars here or something similar with an airtight seal. They are old school here, using a big canning machine for which I have no space or money for. Can I re-use jars with lids that are screw-on and not airtight? Maybe it would only last a few months in my fridge? I figure since it is pickling with vinegar that I could keep it in the fridge for some months. What's your opinion?
@OldManCookin
@OldManCookin 8 лет назад
+Amy S I truly don't know the answer for sure.... But I do know you would not be able to water bath them to make them safe... Can you order from Amazon in Argentina? You could use a Fido jar and lacto ferment your okra... real good for you too... I haven't lacto fermented any okra yet but come summer I will be.... check it out on Fermenters Kitchen on Facebook... you can get just about any question about fermentation there and you can keep it in fridge after fermenting... to do this you will need jars too but Fido jars work great for that... maybe you can find them there.... :)

That actually is no recipe - water, salt, viniger: that is how you pickle cucumbers and anything else - you could have figured a long time ago or got it from anyone else, was no need to wait 30 years - and even worse, a friend would not give it to you: that is a selfish b......, not a friend!

Oh my goodness! You did hit the jackpot! These are delicious and very, very close to the "Talk O' Texas" brand which we love. I did 3 pints with dill seed and 3 with dill weed (ran out of seed and later found I could have substituted Caraway seed for dill seed which I had a full fresh bottle). I've never really ever eaten Okra, but bought a jar of Tobasco Pickled Okra recently and scoffed the lot in three days (and I was holding back!). We don't see much of it in Australia, but I now have seeds and some that I bought at the Fruit and Veg shop to get me by. Pickled Okra is going to be a regular item on my table from now on. I need to dig the preserving unit out from under the house. I haven't used it since the late wife passed in 2007. Thanks for the recipe, I'll be using red chillies, they look better in the jar, haha!

i want to pickle some organic okras which i've been harvesting of late. i want to try your method but as i see, you got some nice 2 lid jars which i am not able to get where i live. just wanted to know whether single lid jars will give the same results or will it cause any problems? thanx and have a great day!!

Ok question I made some pickled okra and it went slimmy like really grossy slimy I used just about the same recipe you did and put them in a pressure cooker is that why they went slimy or does it make a difference between a pressure cooker and a water bath.....

Thanks, however 30 years to get a secret recipe and then you share it with every person on Earth? LOL. I'm guessing you don't get told many secrets by friends. LOL.

what type of liquid did you place in the jar? Was it water or Vinegar? Just curious cause I didn't hear you say it. it sounded like you said, Brian or brain. couldn't make it out. thanks for your video

Can you use a normal pot to sterilise your jars and boil your sealed pickles in?? And if I can't find picking salt (I've looked everywhere!) can I use pure sea salt?

Don't you need to cover okra with brine before putting on lids?
