The thought of giving a cat a pill makes every cat owners heart sink. In this video I will teach you how to pill a cat by yourself easily, without getting scratched or bitten!
I won't argue that it can be simpler if you have someone to help, but giving your cat a pill by yourself is definitely realistic and is something I do every day! It might be giving a medication because your cat is sick. It might just be their routine worming tablet. Either way, learning how to give your cat a pill properly will reduce your apprehension and your cats stress! It will also make the risk of injury to either of you a lot less!

Well, I guess if I give my cat a mild sedative, like people apparently do for every single video just like this one, I'd probably be successful at giving her a pill. Unfortunately, I am not a vet, so I don't have access to sedatives and needles.

I am sure someone will have said this already but I can't in good conscience recommend this video without feeling like a liar & I can not ever use this video without making it clear that it is NEVER THAT EASY!! I really think you had this cat tranquilized & tied up with see through rope!! Yes, it's a JOKE people! I figured the invisible rope line would have made it obvious. I am sure that it is a good way to pill a cat that is mellow, if my cats would just sit still and let me do it I could EASILY pill my cat - UNFORTUNATELY the second I close my hand around her head - IT'S ON! In the background I hear the "ding, ding, ding of the bell to indicate the start of the UFC Ultimate Fight Night" - Fighter #1 is 6 month old Love Bug & she struts into the octagon with the knowledge that she's beaten her opponent 8 & 2 Fighter #2 enters the octagon with a look of desperation in her eyes, knowing she lost the last 5 rounds to "The Bug" & if she loses this final round she will not be able to recover & "The Bug" will keep her spot as the reigning & the Baby Kitten Championship Belt

You have an EXTREMELY compliant cat!! My cats struggle tremendously. Wrapping them burrito-style in a towel helps, but it often takes two people to keep them still enough to either pill or give liquid meds. And if the cat is ill, all bets are off with thinking the cat will cooperate!

I have found after 10 or 12 cats, you have to develop a trusting relationship with the cat before doing this. When you come at an animal and YOU are stressed, anxious about what you're about to do, the animal can sense this. It's much better to just take it super slow and calm, rather than wrapping them in a towel. If your cat is always clawing you and others, I strongly suggest Jackson Galaxys cat tips. He knows what's up. It's not the cat, it's us!

I find it's much easier when they are very ill. Poor things don't care much what you do when they are weak. Plus my cats are very trusting of me for most things.

I have a better technique for pilling cats, since I used to do it for strange cats that I'd foster from the Humane Society. If they are sleeping it's ideal, but relaxed works too. You come kneeling behind them. Give a few gentle pets and before they much know what's happened, I've put my hand under their neck and slipped my finger into the side of their mouth. W/ a little prying, I slip the pill in. Around this time they are cluing in, but too late, it's near to done. I put a hand under their neck and tip it high up to massage the throat, to ensure swallowing. It's a reflex for them to swallow w/ the gentle massage. Because I'm kneeling behind them and straddling them, when they start to wake or try to resist, their first reflex is back up, but my body is blocking so they can't. My hand is firmly on their chest to begin. It's surprisingly quick and easy, because they think it's just a nice cuddle to start. The reason I came looking for this technique, definitely not as easy, esp. w/ non-compliant cats, is because my poor Stewie had a terrible open wound, cellutis infection all up his neck. I was beside myself when even after the antibiotic shot they gave him, I still need to pill him w/ antibiotics twice daily for 2 darn weeks. I'm thinking how the hell am I going to do that when I obviously can't touch his neck for awhile. Hopefully he'll be healing fast in 4 or so days, I can switch back to my technique.

@@saintejeannedarc9460 I love this report. I wish it were true for my kitty. I must give her the pill same time each day. Guess what happens anytime between 4 and 6 pm when she sees me... yep, she hides. No matter if I look at her or just walk past the doorway on my way to the bathroom. Having to pill her has really dampened our relationship. It's so sad. I can pill friend's cats easily because they do not suspect me lol. I tried transdermal meds in the ear but it caused ear problems worse than the current need for meds. *sigh* I guess I should just feel lucky that i don't have to medicate my feral guy!!

Ugh - same! I have a boy that's having bladder issues. The vet gave me 2 liquids and a capsule. His hands aren't as much of an issue as THOSE FEET!!! I have a gash on my ribcage from yesterday to add to my collection of scratches and slashes. "If you have someone to help you...." well, YEAH. A second set of hands/arms would make it unnecessary to burrito.

Exactly. I have two cats that normally given their de worming tablets at the surgery @6 months check up . Otherwise I have do it. It’s huge white tablet. I just wish I can find one video where the cat, behaves like mine do. They make it look so easy......where do they find these cats? 😂😭 I have delayed giving them their tablets for 2 days already.

For those struggling - I thought the exact same thing! I have a tip for a difficult cat! I hold him while I am sitting cross-legged style and put his BACK LEGS under mine locked down a little. Grab his head by the mouth like they show but quickly lean it all the way back - mouth completely up to the ceiling, the pill will actually go into his throat. I wasn’t holding his head back far enough at first. Blow on his mouth, pet his neck, make it positive with a little love before and after… locking legs and head straight up made a huge difference for me. I had lots of painful unsuccessful attempts before that. Treats after reinforce he did a good job too!!

I have a 22-year-old cat who manages to growl at me while I have her up by the back of her neck with her feet off the ground trying to squirt her medicine in her throat she's in a lot of pain she needs some medicine but yet she's about to drown herself growling at me while I've got her by the back of the neck. I thought when you had him up like that it was supposed to make him a mobile BS.. she's getting to the point where she's almost traumatized when I walk in a room because she's so afraid I'm going to grab her up but the medicine helps her it will make her better so what's worse her living in pain be a miserable all day or me chasing her down with medicine it's like both options suck

For wiggly cats I like to squat down behind, legs on either side and sit on one foot so they can’t back out. It’s easy to grab them this way too

My cat naturally is a soft one, but he will easily scares or freak out everytime i want to feed him medicine. My cat not the type that will scratch,bites or hissing. He just smack my hand without using his claws or spit the pill out desperately. 🤣

Got a no fail way to do this. My cats would always just spit the pills out. So I took a mortar and pestle, ground the pill to powder, mixed it up with a dab or two of sticky honey and applied it to one of their front legs. Cats naturally love to groom and so they lick it right off, there by swallowing the meds right down, no effort involved! Works every time. Plus the honey makes your cat sweeter.

This is a good idea! I would check with your vet first to make sure that it is ok to crush the medication you are giving. Some meds will have an adverse effect on the cat if crushed, so check with you vet to be safe.

That's a good idea. My kitty is so elderly she doesn't groom much anymore and will just walk around with the honey or butter on her feet . I have managed at times to wipe the med onto her tongue and it goes down pretty well that way. she can't spit it out like a pill because the butter/honey and crushed pill is clinging to the spines on her tongue.

You say cats 'dont mind at all'. My cat minds. My cat minds very much. I have tried this technique. I dont know how hard you are holding your cats head but this didnt work with my cat. It was like something from the exorcist... and i got bitten. My cat is the sweetest, calmest and most affectionate cat. She is also 17 and not in the best of health or stregnth. It was like being in a room with a wild tiger.

is there any risk of accidentally dropping the pill down the cats windpipe/ trachea and then they choke to death? this is my biggest fear.... also, what if the cat does keeps backing up and ducking under from your hand. my cats will never just sit their butt in one place when I'm grabbing their head. they're all rescue ferals, they hate being immobilized

my cat as soon as the pill is dropped starts blocking it with his tongue super fast and spits while wiggling his head ... ( he is extremely I'll leading to excess saliva also) and no way is he so relaxed I can poke the pill with my finger he immediately starts panic biting while trying to get the pill out ... the burrito method is the same....

I've giving my other cats pills this way for years. Now, I have my "Dinky," a cat that gets on his side, and scratches. In addition, I can't open his mouth. I'm all alone. So, I can't get any help with this. Getting him into the carrier to take him to the vet is just as troublesome. Maybe you can address such situations. Surely, I'm not the only one.

This is all wrong Just wrap the cat in a towel and grab the back of the neck. Drop the pill and use a water dropper to make the cat reflex swallow. Rub under the mouth and hold it shut a few seconds to make sure the cat swallowed it.

That's a good technique if the cat is super friendly and easy to deal with. I just gave two pills to my boy, easily, and haven't managed to give the one deworming pill to my girl. She's the classic scary cat, and now is in hiding after failed attempts at her constantly spitting it out. It's stressful for both human and companion when the cat is naturally anxious or has traumas. That calm, easy technique will not work.

I am going to deworm my cat for tapeworms, and I am going to buy a tablet, it has dosage written with weight and age, so I don't need to see a vet. I am just worried how will I feed her, disguised in food or grab and force feed her, ofc the easiest way is to disguise in food, I am also thinking if she gets more sick after the meds... I am stressed out!

I have yet to see one single video where the cat behaves anywhere close to my cat. No help for me. Even my smug vet claimed it was easy; 10 minutes later, at home, my cat spit out that “easy” pill. Ya’ll don’t have any clue what a difficult-to-pill cat even looks like.

What do I do with a cat that really objects to being pilled? I have to give my little guy 1 tablet twice a day for the rest of his life and he does not enjoy it at all. Often I have to give up in frustration. I have even wound up with bloody fingers. Any tips for pilling this cat?

Can you crush it and mix it in with some wet food? alternatively, there are more and more medications for cats that come in a more friendly, palatable form like an oral liquid or topical treatment

lifting their head up helps to stop this. Lift your own head up and you'll see how much less power you have. A pill popper is another way to go (I'm planning a video on how to use one properly)

So, with my burrito wrapped cat, one hand is holding the towel tight, the other is holding her head and pointing it upward. That's all fine and dandy. I can do that. But wouldn't I need to be some kind of magician to produce a third hand that opens up the mouth and drops the pill...AND pushing it deeper into her mouth? Perhaps I could put the pill in my mouth and use my nose to open her mouth and the ever so quickly phaaa-tooey to pill into her mouth. Is that what you are suggesting? I don't get it. I have only two hands, man. I need a cat straight jacket. With velcro along her back. If I can get the velcro closed then maybe I have a fighting chance. That's what we need.

My kittums is in a cone and I just got a two week pescription of allergy medicine I need to give her twice a day for 2 weeks. She's never had pills, and I'm terrified of hurting her, or messing up. An hour and a half to go till I give it a try Edit: first pill given. She fought, and cried (no scratching, just head thrashing. Kittums is good girl) and I finally got a lucky drop while she was mid cry. Only 27 to go

Her pill this morning was a bit easier, she fought less, but also started to choke a bit. Cried while I cuddled her after, and had to stop her from trying to vomit it up. I think the next two weeks are going to be very difficult for us

my understanding is that tracheal collapse is VERY rare in cats and is certainly not something I've ever seen

@@OurPetsHealth that’s what my vet said too but just happens that his human mommy has it and I suffered for 7 years because it was undiagnosed not that it’s rare. It’s just being missed. And that’s because it has to be diagnosed by a dynamic awake bronchoscopy. Now if that’s also the case in cats well I can totally understand why it’s not being diagnosed. My poor little guy has stridor that has had a full workup and they cannot find the source. Sounds like I was when searching for my diagnosis. Just severely short of breath but at least they can’t say the cat is a mental case. 🙄

@@OurPetsHealth BTW I gave my little buddy his last prednisone pill using your method and it went down without a struggle. Wish I had watched the video earlier. Wish I could say the prednisone helps but didn’t do a darn thing. 😿

Ridiculous. That cat is used to getting a pill. My cat is a maniac when I try and give her a pill. She squirms all over the place. I don’t see a video explaining how to get the cat to stop squirming. Do you?

Thank you for this! The first try he fought me (he's a bit stressed due to moving to begin with) and spit it out. He kept sticking his tongue out to say Nooo! U hand me! She's trying to kill meet! Lol The second try, I closed his mouth, couldn't get it to back but he stayed for a minute and I'm pretty sure he swallowed it bc I can't find it anywhere on the floor lol

Lifting her head up helps beat the locked jaw and then you can use the pill popper to give the tablet. The trick is to put it right as the back of the tongue to trigger swallowing

I know they're not always so cooperative! I've got some other vids planned going through some other techniques. Generally suggest worming every 3 months, monthly if young children about. You can get topical spot on wormer if yours is a bit of a 🦁!

I've used pill poppers, but they often fail so I came here looking for the best hand delivered pill method. I've been managing it but she does like to curl her tongue and try to swivel the smaller pills out 😆. Otherwise she's an absolute trooper and I can't wait to not have to follow this for much longer. @@OurPetsHealth

My cat is a psychopathic demon in comparison to this nice cat. I can’t even open his mouth before he whips his head around like a 4th dimension. Sometimes he’s fine, others the above. Going to try a pill shooter and see if that works. I hate fluoxetine soft tabs. There’s no easy way to give it to him.
